Are you sure its scientific name isn't 'the flu'?

"WVD" has closed down the ER at Toronto's Sunnybrook Hospital this week. Stories I've seen and heard suggest it's the Norwalk virus, or a variant. I've had this; it's nastynastynasty.

Well, that settles it. I'm hiding out in my apartment for the next two months. (The only problem is my husband went for his flu shot yesterday. Those walk-in clinics are full of sick people, you know).

From some of the stuff I've encountered in the last day, it's hard to separate small round structured virus (SRSV), Norwalk, Norwalk-like, and rotavirus with actually doing the stool samples. They all have very similar symptoms, varying more in their rate of infectioun and incubation period. Basically - viral gastroenteritis.

See good reference here...

FOrtunately, it doesn't matter which one you have, because they all get treated the same way. Follow good hygiene (especially washing up), and make sure you don't get dehydrated from vomiting. Preferably, stay at home to avoid infecting others. Antibiotics are useless.

Also Sunnybrook ER isn't completely closed. If you can go elsewhere, they prefer that you do, but if you show up in really bad condition, they will treat you as usual.

Yeah the whole "vomit on short notice" thing is nasty. But anyone in even moderate good health should get over this in 48 hours at the most with no long-term effects.
