That was "Man After Man" by Dougal Dixon. It was pretty silly--I especially liked the groucho-marx-looking human descendants in the desert that carried around giant-headed humans with atrophied limbs who used telepathy to find water. His earlier book, "After Man" (about a world 50 million years after humans went extinct), was a lot better. The website says Dixon is writing the book that'll be released along with the tv program.

I love worldbuilding projects like this.

There was a book, um, twelve or so years back ("Future Man?") that attempted to tackle the same territory. The ecological niches were all filled with altered human types. It was kind of bitter; very eco-snotty.
