Yeah, I was wondering about all that hot wax spilling on tourists. The answer may be to have double walls with wax inside, or "cold" wax (oil/water mix) with an agitator, or even a projection system, like a fake fireplace.

Do Lava Lamps scale well? Their exact composition is a closely guarded trade secret, and from what I've read there is a sizable percentage of failures among the lamps manufactured. I doubt you could simply create a very large one without a *lot* of work to get it to work properly.
