I immediately thought of the effort being made to build an additional runway out in the San Francisco Bay, which is being thwarted by ecologists. I guess they don't have those in the Middle East.

Great! But a few more years of fossil-fuel inspired global warming should reduce these from palm tree islands to blips of algae on underwater hills.

Like the phrase "as large as Rhode Island" (Rhode Island is TINY), isn't it time for the phrase "big enough to be seen from space" to be banned? Things don't have to be all that large to "be seen from space", even with the naked eye. I think it's about time fines were imposed for using that phrase -- the proceeds can go to the "Institute for the Rehabilitation of Lazy Writers".

Maybe Herr Bush will get inspired to build an American flag shaped island in the Persian Gulf.

Hatred of the rich for being the rich is amazing, too.

They should name the streets appropriately: Hummer Boulevard, Lincoln Navigator Lane, Escalade Circle, Ford Excursion Avenue & Chevy Suburban Road.

Though the scale is certainly impressive, the idea of backfilled beach communities isn't new. Satellite photography of the Florida keys reveals similar geometric earthworks built for snowbirds in the '50s and '60s.

"Amazing what a few billions in oil fortunes will let you play around
with."

Also amazing is the hatred intolerance and violence a few billions in oil fortunes will allow you to breed throughout the middle east. Amazing how a revolution can be exported against the evil westerners when it should take place right there where greedy oil barons choose to build massive palm shaped islands while their people are desperately in need of schools, hospitals, and basic rights.
the gross domestic product of ALL of the countries of the middle east COMBINED is equal to that of Spain and the rich ruling class is building what?
Palm shaped islands?

it is revolting.

They don't do things half-way in the U.A.E. Don't forget that they are also host to the tallest hotel (and one of the most luxurious) the Burj al-Arab. Check it out at http://www.jumeirahinternational.com/baa/a.htm.

So, are these beaches Western-style, or do the women have to cover up? Or are there separate-but-equal beaches for Westerners and the Faithful?
