The people who ruined the Internet are not the businesspeople and the lawyers, but the unwashed masses. The unwashed masses drew the businesspeople, who suddenly saw the Internet as a market worthy of exploitation, and created a need for the lawyers for the first time. Without the unwashed masses, neither businesspeople nor lawyers would have the slightest interest in the Internet.

(Tongue partially in cheek. A lot of the things I love about the Internet, e.g. Amazon, would not exist if the Internet consisted of a few tens of thousands of nerds.)
