This has to be voluntary. Otherwise, wouldn't this violate privacy laws?
OK, I just read the letter, duh: "...only with permission from the household, as is the case with all homes in our samples. It is otherwise inactive in non-Nielsen homes."

Nielsen's smart. Advertisers and networks are tired of speculating about PVR usage. The better to adjust ad dollars with. Ultimately, TiVo's info will help advertisers figure out how to reach those thievin' commercial by-passers.
