Actually there seems to be some newer research that indicates that 'introns' may not be inactive but are actually active and give more variability to the production of proteins from genes.

I enjoyed the article. I think the part about "comments" may be a little misleading, since the folding idea is not just to cram a long molecule into a tight space, but also because of the 3D shape of the molecule and the proteins it codes for.

There are some fully / partially sequenced plants out there that seem to have culled their dead code, or never included it in the first place.
