I went to search the hospitals web site to find out more info about this procedure. I was curious because I would think that reattaching limbs or heart-lung transplants would be much more complicated especially considering that a face transplant could result in an "organic mask" without much functionality but still be considered successful from a cosmetic perspective. That is, if a severely disfigured person looks a little more "normal" they would be a lot happier. Anyway, the press office has posted a link to a document that denies that this transplant is planned: "Mr Peter Butler, consultant plastic surgeon, has not yet seen the patient, who cannot be identified, and has no idea yet whether or not this patient would be suitable for the surgery. As matters are at such a preliminary stage, he does not feel it would be appropriate to comment further on this case." http://www.royalfree.org.uk/trustnewsboard.htm

This is merely the acknowledged face transplant. I'm sure there are lots of former dictators who would love this sort of thing.

Way, way back, Saturday Night Live did a spoof public appeal from the Face Bank, asking for donations.
Garret Morris played a lucky recipient who'd recieved the face of a young white girl. The make-up job was . . . disturbing.

Since bone structure and musculature wouldn't be transplanted, wouldn't you look basically the same, just.... different?

Has anyone here SEEN Simon Weston? Severely burned on the Sir Galahad, his face is very mask-like. I would suspect this treatment gives the girl a much better chance of having a better life.

In other face-changing news, doctors in Italy recently performed the first ever jaw transplant: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/2712767.stmIt'll probably be a long time before they can change things like the length of your face or the distance between your eyes, though, so no "face-off" just yet...

"Shades of Vanilla Sky. Or better yet, Logan's Run"
If I finally rent Vanilla Sky, and they transplant some little girl's face, I'm gonna kick yer butt for ruining the ending...

Don't worry, Craniac. Even if you do get around to renting it, you'll probably never watch it until the end without nodding off.

Thanks. Boing Boing should have a reader-recommended movie review section. Or not. I usually just check out metacritic.
