For anybody worried about spam coming to a mailbox they hand out, there is an unbelievably elegant solution thought up by some geeks over at http://spamgourmet.org ...
Self-destructing e-mail addresses. You just hand out people email addresses that forward a limited number of messages to your real e-mail box, then automagically self-destruct and never forward another message. The mailboxes are created on the fly automagically, and you get to choose how many messages get forwarded before they explode. Since the service costs nothing to impliment, the geeks at spamgourmet don't charge anything for it. So take a peep. I've been using their service for about a year, and it works quite nicely.

I live about 15 miles from Faribault, MN. It's a small town with about 19,000 residents. Anyways, Rust Consulting is a legitimate place that handles settlements like this all the time. Several of my friends have worked there over summers doing busy work.
From what I can gather, it is legit.

Well that is the point of a class-action settlement. If you don't affirmatively opt out of the settlement, you are bound to it. And that precludes any independent lawsuit against any of the same defendants for this particular price-fixing scheme.
Now if you wanted to sue them for another scheme, such as their regular concerted increase of CD prices regardless of their costs or market demand, you're free to go and do that.

A sort of LazyWeb request: Can someone read the settlement and determine for certain whether participating precludes future legal action/participation as JWZ suspects?

I didn't like the SSN bit either, so I used a different number. I was guessing they wanted it as some sort of "secret" they could used to ID you.

The Notice of Proposed Settlement looks like the real deal to this attorney.
http://www.musiccdsettlement.com/english/notice.htm
The judge named is indeed the Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court in Maine. (Maine? Do they sell a lot of CDs in Maine?)

The case is really on the court's docket, too. Here's a bunch of interim orders in the litigation.

I propose that we all make claims and donate our settlement funds to the EFF or Creative Commons.

If you are worried about the security of the site for filing your online claim, you can call a toll-free number and they will mail you a paper form. Just don't forget to fill out and mail the sucker. 1-877-347-4782

Yup. That's why it's called a "settlement".

jwz: your suspicions are well founded...if you wish to explicitly opt out of the class then there are instructions on the site on how to do so.

Doesn't taking their $20 payoff constitute an agreement that they have paid their debt? If they have in fact engaged in price fixing, they owe us a hell of a lot more than $20 each. I suspect that taking the $20 in hush-money will preclude one from participating in any future, similar legal action against them.

Ok - what if I actually bought a CD in the United States, but I'm not "in the United States"? I bought a CD while passing through O'Hare in early 1999 (Bare Naked Ladies / Stunt).
My guess is that I'm out of luck - but based on precedent, could I launch a separate suit?

I'm familiar with the spaminator type products. I use an ORL type product at work on my Exchange server (I'm an Exchange admin). But for my web-stuph I use a hotmail account that I've had forever. I've not seen a product that will interface with the HTML-based mail system. Love to hear of something though. I do use Microsoft's own filters, but they're overwhelmed.
