Mark: Well, there's a voting system for ranking books on http://www.blackmask.com -- doesn't seem many people use it, but it's there.

Well, K5 is considering a fiction section. The submission voting process does go some way toward weeding out the quality submissions from the crap. With the overall death of viable short fiction markets elsewhere, I think it could be a good thing.

I've seen sites of palm books, but I'd like to see a free fiction site that had amazon-style ratings attached.
Lazy web! Lazy web!

douglas rushkoff's cyberia is also available online at http://www.rushkoff.com/cyberia.html, tho it hardly counts as science fiction.

Hey, this reminds me of something in the Turkey City Lexicon that Cory posted a while back.
She could have had any surroundings she wanted, even a whole planet of her own design. A waste of time, she felt. Her personal space was minimal. In fact, it was the bare minimum, a floor and a gravity field. There was no visual distinction between the floor and the sky or ceiling or whatever you chose to call it. Everything was exactly the same shade of soft white.
It's "White Room Syndrome"!

Here's something that's not precisely novels, but it has the distinction of being the oldest shared-fiction writing group on the Internet that's still active (that I know of). I've just submitted a writeup of it via the submit link in the hope that it'll be deemed interesting enough to run.

There's some really, really good stuff in its archives...check it out! (And I don't just say that because some of it's mine. :)

Robotech_Master: You're right, for an unpublished work the free licensing is not particularly newsworthy, especially compared to Cory's published book being released freely.

I sent the tip mostly just because I think the book is really good, and so far I haven't seen anyone who's read it and disagrees. Finding good stuff to read is fun. :-)

Hm. Now I'm wondering how many 60K+ word novels are there actually out there on the net for free? JD Lasica's got one, though it may not be reproduced. Are there sites where people can upload their novels? Are people posting them on weblogs? And perhaps more interestingly, are they all using commons-friendly licenses a la Cory, or traditional licenses a la JD?

I'm not sure what's so newsworthy about this, unless he's a friend of yours or something. I'm sure there are about a zillion unpublished novels online, under free-share licenses or otherwise. That's hardly anything new. What makes a free book release, like DaOitMK, newsworthy is the fact that it's being given away free even as it's being print-published.
