It's no big mystery. Just look at the links on the front page today, and think how many people would love to point out how whack this site is. Link to a FARK photoshop contest??? Promotion of combination gay/straight porn sites (which could only mean bisexual/gay porn)???
The John Gilmore crap may have driven him over the edge so far as comments are concerned, but this site has always been extremely fucked up and afraid to admit it. Every time somebody pointed it out in the comments, it'd be like, "Hey, this site's not fucked up! You're fucked up!"
Doctorow needs the security of an ivory tower, or a mental institution. The modicum of fame he's acheived is not enough to stop people from calling him a jackass, and that fact is deeply at odds with the arrogance he feels he has earned.

+1! The comments were fantastic. Cory, *please* reimplement the comments system somehow... a blog just isn't a blog without comments.
(my favourite BB comment: a posting from an Argentinian farmer talking about the use of GMOs in his country. you don't get that kind of comment anywhere else ;)

The comments were half of the reason I read this site in the first place. It used to be a community, and now it's just a newspaper. Sad.

You reckon this was the negative comment that finally made him snap? I thought it was a bad idea to have comments in the first place. Invevitably, a community will form, and start to claim ownership of the site.
Maybe they're just switching to a new comments system, but this is still very entertaining. I clearly remember Doctorow falling for one of my trolls, ranting about how he believes in free speech and I'm killfiled and John Gilmore is a hero and he'll never give me the satisfaction of removing the comments section... It was quite hillarious.
I feel kind of bad now, though. There's no pleasure in being right. It's funny how trolling is never understood, but the truth is even more misunderstood. God help him at that Second World reading. I don't have the heart to mess with him, but I'm sure there are dozens of trolls who will do it just for the sake of mischief.

This is a rather weak argument for a non-infringing use (although I understand how the EFF is desperate for anything to be able to point to as a non-infringing use other than the statistically insignificant "independant band" case...) It is like claiming that because Wal-Mart collects data on what items are most frequently shoplifted that this somehow excuses the shoplifters because they are providing valuable data on the pricing pressure on a particular product. Collecting data on which products your "customers" are most likely to steal is not a non-infringing use of a technology product.
