Well that was fucking useless. MSNBC.com made me sit through an ad for Sprint and then crashed my browser (Mozilla).

'You're in a tail, 16 feet under water, breathing on a hose,' she said. 'If you think about it too much you can freak out.'

I went to Wiki Watchee about ten years back. Whatever year it was that Worldcon was in Orlando.

It was fun. Low key, low budget, inoffensive. In addition to the "Little Mermaid" show, the park had a birds-of-prey show and a boat ride through some wetlands.

For the ironically inclined, there were the Creeps: A "touched" looking older teen who sat alone in the front row of the mermaid show, hunched over and nervous-looking, and the moustached, portly bubba who spent the show up in back, taking pictures. One of my group asked the lady in the admissions hut about the latter; she said he'd purchased a season pass and was there every day to oogle and photograph the mermaids.

Ah, Weeki Wachee...

I was 14 when mom took the kids to Florida to take our minds off our dad, who had died two months earlier. It rained most of the time, and being in a cheap Clearwater motel room wasn't as much fun as you might think. We did the Disneyworld thing, but at 14 my main job was to give attitude about everything, and I wasn't that impressed (except the Haunted House, but 45 minutes of waiting suck the joy out of going a second time.)

But Weeki Wachee, which we went to just before we left, entranced me.

Maybe it's because I was a horny and bored 14 year old, and these were cute girls I was SUPPOSED to stare at. Maybe I had a mermaid fetish, but I sat there and watched for over an hour. The rest of the family had to drag me away.

Man, that was 30 years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday.
