Obviously this doesn't have many big names yet -- Negativland is damn cool, but of course they would sign on to anything like this.

If it picks up momentum from independent musicians, though, it could reach the point where it could attract the attention of established stars. This is the letter I sent to three regionally popular bands whose CDs I have on hand:

"Hi --

I bought your CD when you played at [my] College last year. I
also regularly use file sharing services, combined with
internet radio, to try out new music before I buy. I'm not alone -- one
sixth of Americans download music. That's about half of all computer
users.

As the RIAA begins suing file swappers, it looks to me like they're
persecuting their own customers -- that one sixth of Americans buy more
than their share of music, not less.

From this perspective, I wonder what you think of the musician's
petition asking the RIAA to cease their lawsuits:

Electric Gypsies are one of Eastern Utah's premere bands. The depth and talant exposed through music is the type that Hendrix wished he had...kidding.
But hey I love the indies. For them speaking out may be carreer ending, where as someone with a name has little to lose. So show some respect.

I don't have a problem with the RIAA cracking down on people sharing RIAA tracks. I have a problem with the RIAA cracking down on non-RIAA track sharing, however, or more to the point, the fact they pretend to represent "all musicians," when they certainly don't. There's far more unsigned musicians out there than RIAA musicians, and frankly, none of my current favorite musicians are RIAA members.

If the RIAA were to clarify their position and state that they're only cracking down on the sharing of RIAA tracks (since most non-RIAA musicians actively support the sharing of their tracks, since it's the only way they get any recognition whatsoever in these days of ClearChannel-controlled airwaves) then I think many of the petition-signing people would have much less of a problem with the whole issue.

Basically, the RIAA shouldn't make it seem as though they're going to crack down on the sharing of tracks where the copyright holder is fine with the music being shared. (For example, in the case of Phish live concert recordings, Phish holds the copyright, not the RIAA, and Phish is happy to have those tracks shared as long as there's no money involved.)

They have the members of maybe 5 or 6 bands I've never heard of (not that I'm particularly up on band names) and a number of people who have no listed affiliation, and a scattering of people who have worked for non-RIAA record labels and who run music related websites.

Much as I dislike the RIAA and their tactics, this is just bs. Get Billy Joel, Peter Frampton, Mick Jagger and a few other universally recognizable names on there, including some classical and country and jazz and blues, and some of the newer stars who made it past one-hit-wonder and aren't in a boy band, along with a few political leaders and well-recognized CEOs and finance magnates, and then maybe people will pay attention.

I mean... "Electric Gypsy" -- it's either an italian hendrix tribute band or a a mediocre Tennessee band that sounds like an uninspired Jewell knockoff. I'm voting for the latter, since their website seems to be one large diatribe against the RIAA along with some mp3/ra streams. Either way, not exactly someone who's going to put fear into the RIAA's cold, slimy heart. Put the people they're making money from out there, not the people they wouldn't even consider signing. I mean, for some people, boycotting the RIAA is like me boycotting the power lifting championships, or our esteemed US President boycotting a spot in the national grammar bowl. Who'd care? Who'd expect otherwise?
