What's the difference between this and looking up how to make bombs, or to shoplift, or to do other destructive things? As a matter of fact, when I was seriously suicidal, I was able to quickly find Geo Stone's web site via Google. Stone has written what's considered by psychological professionals and the thanatophiliac as the authoritative guide to suicide. His web site contains large excerpts from the book. I also found many "what can go wrong" pages, which balanced it out. Stone's book was on the shelf at my local Borders, alongside the suicide prevention books. What's the point of having Google exempt documents on suicide methodology or other stories which might "trigger" a sensitive person when the information is already out there in bookstores, movies, etc.? I believe your intentions are good, but you're looking in completely the wrong place to help.

Me too, Craniac.

I do wish they had a kid-version. Yahooligans is a lousy search engine for kids--difficult to understand, done through heirarchies which little kids don't really 'get'. If Google did it, it would probably be done right. I guess we have to wait until the googleguys have to time to have some kids.

I would buy a google-branded toaster.

I see that the Google news item that appears at the top of the page talks about a suicidal couple who got together over the internet for the express purpose of killing themselves. Yeah, that's gonna be very helpful to suicidal people.</sarcastic>

I bet they could remove the news from certain searches and it wouldn't be any sort of bad thing.

Reminds me of a bit I read last week, someone was pointing out that Google could retrieve results of a search for "insert phrase here" from several billion computers faster than Windows (or Mac OS) can search a hard drive.

Google totally needs to make and brand their own Linux distribution. These guys just get it.

I looked up "how to kill yourself" once, and found an article by (Art Kleiner?) about how any number of suicides go horribly, horribly wrong, living the "victims" crippled, paralyzed, missing half their faces yet still alive, etc. etc.

http://www.well.com/user/art/suicidepge1.html

I wasn't seriously thinking about it (and when I finish my dissertation I'll seriously not think about it even more) but this article, in all its candor, was as good a deterrent as any.

I wonder if it would be ethical for a funeral home to purchase a top "featured result" slot for their "How To Off Yourself" site.
