feel beat

Last Sunday I bought a set of drums, and they've definitely supplanted rowing and outdoor exercise this past week.

The drums are a workout -- I can tell by the soreness (yes, fellow drummers, I'm using my wrists and trying to stay relaxed) -- but they're not as aerobic, as I can tell by my time on the rowing machine this morning.

I've also been doing long reps of weights now, in preparation for the Vermont Adventure Games, which we've committed to (yikes).

Down to a lightweight rowing weight, though! Not that I'm striving for that, but it feels good.

The drums, by the way, are an absolute gas. Dangerously so for an hourly-wage contracting person like me.

shards

Ach, my exercise program is blasted to fragments. The consistency picture is floating apart like slabs of melting pond ice. If there's a single culprit other than the teasing changing season, it's probably this drum compulsion that keeps me up late doing rudimentary drills. Late night paradiddles over early morning power-tens. The drummer's throne usurps the sliding seat. etc. It's surely exercise because I'm exhausted by bedtime, but it's shorter on cardio benefit.

That Monday run helped derail the rowing train too -- I was sore through Thursday, descending steps gingerly like my wife after a marathon. I guess I can't just go run five miles after a winter's rest of whatever muscles differ from rowing.

So I've got another annual carrot to help me go on -- the Vermont Adventure Games -- in which I'll kayak for our legendary (to us) team DiviDivi for the third year running. I forewarned the other team members that this year I won't be training an hour a day before the race (the kayak segment is about that long), and they all seem to be in the same mode. But beware to our stealthy competitors, we may catch you with your guard down!

Nature boy

Got outside for a run yesterday! Great to be out in the big room with the blue ceiling.

Back on the machine this morning. DNFed a planned longer workout. I should stick to the original shorter ones, if, as I say, I'm doing all this other sit-down stuff all day (yep, up again 'til midnight banging the mousepad -- a real practice pad is on order though). Slightly offblog, I watched Standing in the Shadows of Motown last night -- great documentary about the previously obscure session guys behind an incredible number of Motown hits.
