Yikes, now I have no choice but to prepare. Team Divi Divi is enrolling for the Vermont Adventure Games again this year. Last year was my first time river kayaking. This year I have no excuses!
Looking for inspiration, I went down to the CRASH-Bs today. Got what I was looking for, along with a bit of hoarseness. Others' cheering seemed strictly partisan, but I was taken with the effort I knew every one of the competitors put in, though the men's US national team members that showed up to sweep the awards were almost laconic in their experienced performances. The women's field was more international and emotion-stirring.
It was a really well-organized event. I had to chuckle that after a day's worth of about 20 events back-to-back events, they were still ahead of schedule. 'Course there wasn't much to shuffle around besides bodies.
OK, let's see if I can find the discipline to shuffle my equipment into place tomorrow morning.
Yesterday morning I broke the tip off my right ski. They are wooden skis made in Finland that I have used for 31 seasons. My parents got the skis for me from a hardware store called the Country Gentleman when I was 12 years old. I have used them ever since. I of course needed longer poles as I grew and I also needed new boots along the way. So, on my way home from work last night, I bought a complete new set of poles, boots and skis (not wood). If these last 31 seasons, it will cost $5.45 per year. I get a kick out of how cheap the nordic equipment is compared to the alpine equipment. I just walked in the store and got the "el-cheap-o package" (which is actually quite nice) and did not even take the box that the boots came in. I told the guy I needed the bindings mounted while I waited so I could use them this morning. They were nice, and accommodated me. Happy trails.
Workout stimuli that work: two pots of tea and Brad Mehldau's Largo CD.

Made myself get back on the rowing machine this morning. Too many days have gone by where I tell myself it's nice out so I'll go for a run, but never end up doing it. So it's back to realizing the limitations of the beast and leading him by the nose.
I'm afraid I'll have to give up some newfound consistency in morning meditation to make room for physical exercise, otherwise everything starts to deteriorate. I'lll keep working to find the right balance.
My wife cajoled me into playing hooky this morning and going out cross country skiing with her. Excellent choice! Man, I needed that badly.
