Did some icy-blast skiing (XC and downhill) this weekend with my family. Bracing! Refreshing! Near-frostbiting!
Been to the mini-gym at the office a couple of times too, but it's a place that's barely compelling enough to keep up a routine. Co-workers keep some momentum going. But today, I feel the need for a crude old stand-by motivation. I'm not showering, so I'll feel grungy enough by noon that I'm forced to shower there, and how shameful it would be to shower without exercising first. Ewwww.
Joe says "boy, that Exerblog was great -- it really worked to get me exercising". Was? Worked? Get your past tense slacker butt back here, man!
Just to pump up the shame culture: I got fully back on the rowing machine two days ago. I actually had that feeling I used to have 10 years ago that my lungs were the only limit -- the muscles were all there for it. The every-other-day rest is good for performance, but it puts me on the very sharp edge of losing consistency and falling off. I'll need y'alls help.
Yesterday I did stationary bike exercise again. Discovered that Business Week doesn't absorb sweat as well as Time. It's also just above my concentration threshold (unlike Time) when most of my blood is needed outside my brain.
Got tentatively back onto the rowing machine over the weekend, doing half a regular light workout. Thankfully the rib didn't feel any worse -- still hurts when I sneeze though.
My wife cajoled me to go out cross-country skiing with her -- one of the few sports where I can keep up with her. Got a good workout, especially after she ran into one of her friends and she kicked up the pace, leaving me to huff while they chatted.
Gotta love this NYT article, a nice compendium of all the arguments we've heard about how drinking is good for your heart.
My favorite quote for taking out of context: "Moderate drinking was about as good for the heart as an hour of exercise a day."
Just Chug It.
BTW, I did do the exercise bike yesterday. The little gym in our office building was packed with resolutioners.
I've slacked off for almost a week now. While I was away for Christmas, I managed to get to a gym once and did the rowing machine, but this rib thing really needs a rest. I must have pulled something; it's excruciating to sneeze, which makes for some hilarious-looking gymnastics when I feel the urge coming on.
So I have to have an alternate way to exercise. I brought my exer-duds to work today and will try the stationary bike. I promise!
