There's a great essay / account in _The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat_ in which Sacks describes the case of a patient whose neurological condition temporarily alters his _relationship to smells_. They suddenly become incredibly important; he finds himself judging and classifying the things in his world by odor, not visual appearance.
