hi jay, just read the recent posting on your Blog concerning corporate awareness. it seems to me that from a liability perspective blogs are the worst of both worlds, combining the casual off the cuff dangers of email with broad availability and exposure of the internet. Its only a matter of time before the lawsuites start over somthing an employee posted to a blogg.

Lisa, on usability, The Masie Center is taking a strong position. Their new facility has soundproof cubes which videotape users as they try out software. You might check out http://www.internettime.com/itimegroup/design.htm#uid as well. Bill P, I've put As the Future Catches You on my list. A review from HBS Publishing showed up in my email box this morning. Reading about the use of wildtype sizes, I think I'll check this one about from the libary rather than buy it. Bill K, the last five TechLearns have been based at DisneyWorld, so I imagine that pattern will continue. It's usually around Halloween. Jim, you're right. The attorneys will have a field day for a while. In time, however, I expect the Cluetrain philosophy to take hold. When this happens, the laws will need to recognize that an off-the-cuff remarks by one employee shouldn't really open his or her deep-pocketed employer to extreme risk. Your analogy to email is apt. It creates written documentation of half-baked thoughts that are easy to misconstrue when taken out of context. Most companies seem to feel it's worth the risk.

jay, i wish i could be as optimistic, but i believe it highly unlikely that the formal civil structures of our society will be able to adapt at a pace anywhere near that of our informal ones. The cluetrain is a powerfull engine for connectivity and community, but it is a subway.

Hi Jay, thanks for listing Click2learn in the vendor section under solutions, LMS, authoring, and LCMS - that's where we fit. Some of the listings have older web links - please update them to http://www.click2learn.com. Thanks, Leo P.S. We'll keep the company name the same for a while to make it easier to keep the links up to date ;-)

Jim, they put something in our water here in Berkeley that turns us into optimistic lefties who wear funny-looking clothes and are never satisfied with the status quo. You're probably right that the civic wheels turn very slowly. However, the rate of change is accelerating, so there's reason for hope. I was quite surprised to see Christopher Locke's screed on Gonzo Marketing appear in Harvard Business Review.

How would we go about having a new eLearning system listed on your site? Acumen is a unique Capital Markets and ALM training tool that can be delivered either through the internet or via a corporate intranet. Acumen can be linked to any LMS and it's interactive format with quizes and tests make it the best financial eLearning system available. http://www.acumennet.com

Two points about the same thing. (1) Learnativity.com--Marcia Conner's and Wayne Hodgins's great e-learning site--seems to have vanished. Do you have any idea what's happened to it? (2) Obviously, your link to the site is broken. mailto:don.morrison@knowledgedonut.com

Learnativity.com is online. I'll mention a free service that reports when one's website is down to Marcia when I see her next week.

Hi Jay...
A belated thanks for your reply to my mid-October post about Competency Management vis-a-vis the LMS marketspace.
Your summary of the opinions of e-learning execs on Competency Management was very telling... In their world it may indeed just be a "check-the-box" feature in which they have little true interest. Implementing Competencies within the context of a larger elearning initiative is indeed a big nut to crack, and I can see how the Competency elements could fall by the wayside after the sale (and how the elearning vendor might not much care).
But one should not conclude from this that Competency initiatives themselves are flawed in theory or practice. We have many, many Competency Management success stories when they were undertaken on their own (without elearning elements) simply for their own considerable merits.
I'd submit that when Competencies are ignored or postponed within an elearning implementation, that may be more a failing of the vendor and/or customer rather than a failing of the concept itself. But of course, in this world we must deal with what "is" rather than what "should be".
Thanks for your perspective. It will be useful to us as we sort out our strategic direction.
Do you know if there is any available transcript / minutes / summary of that elearning-executive luncheon you referenced?
