There has been a sequence of papers recently trying to
realize the standard model, with the right gauge group and matter content, by considering systems of 4-branes wrapped on various
1-cycles of a two-torus, and transverse to a four dimensional
orbifold e.g T^4/Z_3. The latest appeared today hepth/0108131
discussing Yukawa couplings in addition to anomaly cancellation conditions; string scale is supposed to be around a few TeV... would be nice to know what people think of this line of work
