If you look at the diagram for the 180, you will see streams of droplets of fuel. Absent a good vacumn, caused by an air leak, your engine cannot pull in the fuel. So it sems we have come complte circle. After you have tightened the carb back the manifold, spray a light amount of starter fluid around the base. Should you have an air leak, the rpms will increase indicating that the base seal is leaking air. If you remember, you aaid it would run better if you choked off the air supply with a towel.
