Hi John-
Value will vary widely depending on many factors- condition, originality, equipment, etc. First question- is it a Ponton or a W111 car ('61 was a transition year- both types were available)? Please send photos to oldbenz1@aol.com or call me at (616)682-0799. I sold my Ponton cabrio recently but now wish I had it back- looking for another one to OWN, not flip for profit. I've been a Ponton collector for 50 years!

I'm selling my 1959 220SE Ponton Coupe on Ebay. Number is 250409176344. Any idea what it might be worth?
Also, check out the custom mats I just bought for her in the interior pictures. They came from Lloyd Mats in California. Notice that they made the carpeted mats from patterns I provided to them from the original rubber mats. I believe they have them on their computer now. Or they will send you a tracing kit to send back to them so you are sure to get what you want. OTOH, they sure make my original carpet look even more worn out.

I have heard from several on pricing the SE Cabrio. So here is my plan.
The car will be for sale soon for $55000.00. Totally rust free, complete, currently a great driver with almost perfect original chrome, good oil pressure etc.
This is a four speed car that can be used as is or restored over time. White with red interior and black top.
Needs wood restored and arm rests on doors recovered.
I can be contacted at <jwurner@mcsi.net> or 541 673-4061.
Car is in Southern Oregon.

Can anyone recommend a shop to rebuild a 220SE ponton fuel pump. Not the injection pump but the pump back at the fuel tank.

Thank you,

Jim V.

Are you sure it needs a rebuild? If it is just plugged up from gas sitting in it too long, try removing the inlet fitting and filling it up with Sea Foam and let it sit for a few days. The stuff just melts the gelled up gas. Then hook up a battery to it for a few seconds while you whack it on the side with a small piece of wood to jar the impeller loose. If it doesn't work the first time, put some more Sea Foam in it and be patient. I've 'fixed' two of mine that way. Be sure to clean out the small screen filter in the pump behind the inlet fitting. It will probably have gunk and/or rust particles in it. If it is really blocked with dirt, it may have caused the pump to overheat and you will need a rebuild.

Looking for a cloth roll that holds the tool kit. I can use it even if it's ragged or torn- as long as it's good enough to as a pattern to make a repro. The correct part for Pontons is made of canvas (not vinyl) and is tan or pale olive drab in color- not red or gray. Althoug I have a set of tools, and really only need the canvas, I might consider a complete kit with tools and roll. Contact me at oldbenz1@aol.com

Rich, $75 gets you an original with some holes. Your choice, tan or green (OD)

I bought a type 219 last fall and just drove a little before putting it in winter storage. It was a little hard to start and didnt have much power but I thought a good tune up would take care of it. Now this spring it is clear something is wrong. The acceleration is really weak and it surges like it has rubber band drive. I'm not expecting much but the acceleration in 4th at 50mph is very weak. Starting when warm requires a lot of cranking with the pedal to the floor. I have been fooling with cars for 40+ years so I'm not a novice nor am I an expert but heres what I've done so far. New plugs and points. Checked gaps, checked timing (including checking cam timing), checked dwell. Also substituted electric fuel pump new filters and fresh gas. Sprayed around carb with cleaner looking for air leaks and cleaned main idling and starter jets. My good friend who is an old hot rodder from way back and usually right says to junk the carb and find an alternative and adapt it to fit. I would like to keep the origonal if possible. The mercedes classic center says that rebuild kits are not available but parts are available individually.

Any thoughts out there on what my problem is and if it is the carb what should I do or replace?

Thanks, Peter

219 owners, I'm rebuilding my stock carb but plan B is to try a Stromberg 97 or actually an updated version called a super 7 available from Speedway. This carb fits exactly on the stock manifold, three bolts same bores and spacing. Anybody else tried this?

Philip, I installed the rebuild kit but Iam still having problems. Can you tell me the correct float level for this carb? (PAATJ). Thanks, Peter

Peter, my repair manual does not give a "float level", but does indicate that the fuel level in the bowl should be 13-15mm and the injection quantity of the accelerator pump should be 1.3-1.5 cc/stroke. The fuel level is adjusted via the three different thickness washers in the bag with the needle valve.

For those interested, the price increase is due to the addition of the three additional gaskets for the intake manifold spacer and the carb base plate. Only two are shown in the picture. Installing these gaskets will reduce the possibility of an air leak at the intake pipe.

I only have two kits currently available.

Philip, Thank you for the reply. I've been using the level for a different carb. Peter
