the xanthelasma treatment got rid of my lesions only after 4 weeks :| . I was expecting it to do the trick after 2 weeks, cos I had an important date. Anyhow, its gone now though not as fast I thought it would

yes the xanthelasma treatment is excellent. I tried it personally . It took a while to clear though, 3 weeks to be exact. I had some leftover which I gave a friend and the treatment helped her too :)

Hi, has anyone used the xanthelasma treatment cream, how effecive is it?
genesis  182
04-16-2009 12:36 AM ET (US)
i used the xanthelasma treatment, it didnt show an effect until the 2nd week of treatment, it gradually softens the xanthelasma scar and it fades away completely after the 6th week. seemingly being absorbed by the body. i am now on the skin whitening treatment for 3weeks already. i must say its fantastic :)

i havent tried the xanthelasma treatment, but their milia and syringoma treatment cleared my problems effectively . it took a while, 3 weeks to be exact but works fine. i am keen to try the xanthelasma treatment too! at my age, i am thankful there is a cheaper and safe way to keep beautiful!

I just ordered the Xanthelasma treatment. This is a new problem for me. I located Naturlis and thought it would be worth a try considering some of the medical options available. Acid, lasers, scarring, etc. I was happy to find it but does anyone have experience with having Xanthelasma and what success have you received from the Xanthelasma treatment?

Hi, I'm planning to visit Singapore at end of Jan, 2007 and wondering if there is any shops that I can buy seeds such as clover, cress, alfalfa, etc for sprouting. The seeds should be (Ideally organically grown). If anyone in Singapore know some shops, I appreciate if you could email me to babstk@hotmail.com Thank you for your help!!!

no doubt about the milia treatment product, it works as claimed . only that mine took a little longer (2 weeks) as they were old stubborn milia. new ones that appear due to heavy make up was cleared within 2 days...quite a good product
Via  157
06-09-2006 03:25 AM ET (US)
Does the milia treatment really works? I have white seeds on my eye lids for ages and I haben found a treatment. The cost of the cream is kinda steep for trying out.

Oh yes I tried the pore reducer, works wonderfully and permanently. I only used two thirds and the pores were visibly reduced. I gave the balance to my good friend but she had to buy another jar to complete the treatment. Her pores were larger, hence the additional treatment cream required...Overall, quite an impressive product...anyone tried the breast enlargement please give feedback! Thanks!

Hazel, did you use the scar treatment twice daily? It will accelerate the healing if you do. I did that and my scars healed relatively fast. I was told it could be use during the day as a base too.

Hi NinaKuok, do you use sun protection? I am using their whitening treatment with spf 15 (minimum) and skin tightening treatment and I don't have any problems. You will still need your basic sun care protection, freckles are often caused by absence of or lack of suncare. Take care!

It didn't take long. My complexion started to improve a week into using the acne cleanser and treatment. In fact, the skin felt better after three days, you can feel its smoothness. An advice, let the cleanser stay on skin as long as possible. I did it for ten minutes and rinse off with slight warm water. Enjoy the smoothness after. As for the scars , it took about a week and a half to see an obvious lightening of the scars.
Lin  122

Thanks vivien for sharing. Now I'm more confident to try out their products. Been skeptical lately as those over the counter and doctor's prescription doesn't seem to be working at all. At times, I even think that I'm born with acne problem and have to live with it.

No, the naturalis products does not dry up my skin. In fact, the products have a moisturising effect . More importantly, they have put my acne problem under control where I have failed to do so with over the counter prescriptions.
Lin  116
02-08-2006 01:15 PM ET (US)
Vivien, does their product dries up your skin like those you get over the counter or doctors prescription? And how long will you be able to notice improvement on your skin?

I had my serious acne problem since my teens under control using their acne cleanser and acne cream. Their scar treatment helps with my acne scars too. The naturalis products are good but it does come with a premium, but I think its all worth it. I never had such good skin for years!

I use their naturalis hair recovery treatment , excellent for preventive hair loss and works to grow new hair along bald hairline. But that is if you have not lost hair for more than five years, as advised by them.

So far I have always kept the Naturalis products ( I have more than 10 items and have stocked enough for my family) in a small bar fridge in my room. The products are really sensitive to heat, I have tried leaving them for a few days in the open and it turns bad real quick. Best to keep in the cool temperature, really.

Thats easy, for skin tightening, I use their rejuvenating toner. Its really good and tightens skin fast. For eye, the eye revive is excellent to treat eyebags and fine lines. I don't use sunscreen together with the whitening treatment as it offers sufficient protection on its own.
ninakuok  96

mary thanks.
how abt skin tightening? what product is suitable? is the whitening really tighening the skin? do I have to apply another cream? how about eye ?

I have had similar experience with pigmentation & melasma after pregnancy, it took about 3-4 weeks for me to clear it using the naturalis skin whitening system (that's a combination of the whitening treatment and whitening lotion). I do this twice a day. Leave the lotion on skin for up to 15 mins, lightly rinse off, apply the treatment cream day and night. Hope this helps!

From my experience with Naturalis and Trilogy, I find Naturalis helps in permanent healing of dark eye circles/puffy eyes and fine lines. Trilogy is more for fast relieve of tired/puffy eyes, but they come back quite right away. I would recommend Naturalis if you want permanency. However, its best that you speak with their customer service before you buy . Cheers!

I am having skin problems so I ordered the Naturalis purifying cleanser. I was asked to double cleanse when I reach home at night (first time use a wet tissue to wipe off as I have apply loose powder to work and 2nd time to wash away to bathing) and when i wake up in the morning (apply, massage and leave it for 10mins).

I felt different after using really. I am thinking to get the Naturalis Scar treatment and rosehip oil too... The consultants asked me to try out the cleanser first cos now problem is the cleansing first... after i try it becomes better then buy the rest... They dun do HARD SELL. tats why I like them too.. They are very professional. They only want you to buy what you need NOW!!

The Components Responsible for the Effectiveness of Rose Hip Oil

In December 1988 two doctors published their findings in a paper titled Contributions to Identification and Application of Active Components Contained in Rosa Aff. Rubiginosa. The authors were Dr Bertha Pareja, Principal Professor, Faculty of Pharmacology and Biochemistry, University of San Marcos, Lima, Peru and Dr Horst KehI, from the School of Pharmacology of the University of Missouri, Kansas City, Missouri, USA. Dr KehI took part in the effort in his capacity of Visiting Professor at the San Marcos University.

The positive action of Rose Hip Oil in helping to regenerate damaged skin tissues was originally attributed to its high content of unsaturated essential fatty acids, namely oleic (15-20%), linoleic (44-50%) and linolenic (30-35%). They are called " essential " because our body is not able to reproduce them.

Although these acids are important to maintain a healthy skin (when taken internally), for they are components of the cell's membrane and precursors of prostaglandine/leucotriens (their activity is hormone-like), providing tissue-regenerating and rejuvenating effects, their presence did not establish enough scientific evidence to explain the properties of "Rosa Mosqueta" in reducing surgical and accidental dermal scars or to eliminate certain hyper-pigmented spots and lessen wrinkles.

TRANS-RETINOIC ACID

Dr. Berta Pareja and Dr. Horst Kehl, succesfully identified the presence of Trans-Retinoic acid as the component responsible for the remarkable pharmacological properties of Rose Hip Oil. Trans-Retinoic acid is a derivative of Retinol (Vitamin A) and is marked as Tretinoin.

The therapeutic effects of the topical application of Tretinoin, in the treatment of a variety of dermatology disorders, have been well-researched and recognized for almost 30 years. The most significant results have been produced in the treatment of photo-aged skin - skin damaged by excessive exposure to sunlight. Tretinoin can produce quick and positive changes in the skin, but because it is a very strong substance, it must be applied under medical supervision.

Rose Hip Oil produces the benefits of Tretinoin, but without secondary side effects, because the Trans-Retinoic Acid contained in it is in a natural state as part of a complex system of unsaturated fatty acids. Therefore, its action is controlled and slowly released by nature, eliminating the risk of overdoses.

The findings of Dr. Pareja and Dr. Kehl have helped to legitimatize Rose Hip Oil in the market, facilitating the promotion of this wonderful product.

The following paragraphs are extracts from the paper.

ROSE HIP OIL APPLICATION ON AGED SKIN (PHOTOAGING)

Changes produced on skin by the action of the sun, i.e., photoaging (dermatoheliosis) are very common in all countries of warm climate. Exposure to sun causes important morfological changes in skin. Dermatoheliosis appears in different ways and varying intensity ranging from surface wrinkles, active keratosis and variation in the distribution of the melanin granules.

For this test volunteers were selected among people who usually spend the 3 months of summer in resorts by the sea or who go to the beach every day. The tests were carried out on 20 women aged between 25 and 35 who were controlled and assessed during the summer of 1988. The most frequently noted cutaneous signs were surface wrinkles, brown spots, eyelids and, in some cases, only an intense tan. All applied rose hip oil on the face during four months (May to August, Autumn 1988).

Observations were made every eight days. Significant changes were noted starting on the third week. Firstly, surface wrinkles started to disappear, spots started to fade until, at the end of the fourth month, the disappearance was almost complete. Skin presented a smooth and fresh aspect and the spots had almost disappeared.

ROSE HIP OIL APPLICATION ON SURGICAL SCARS

For this test we used scars that had equal features. Ten women, aged between 45 and 68, were selected who had suffered unilateral or bilateral mastectomy.

Applications of rose hip oil were made, starting on the day when the surgical stitches were removed. After washing the area with tepid water and soap and careful drying, the oil was applied by soft massage. After three months of applying twice daily (morning and evening) it was noted that the scars were less apparent, without lumps and that skin elasticity had improved and the color of the area had improved significantly.

We carried out these observations for four months after the operations and the treating doctors indicated that the skin conditions were improving considerably, allowing implantation of prosthesis or plastic surgery in far better conditions than with patients who had not been treated.

Scars are a permanent visible reminder of a significant event in a person's life and can be a reminder of an unhappy or bad experience. Though there are many different techniques to lessen the visibility of scar tissues, including cosmetic surgery, pressure garments, the use of locally injected steroids and silicone gel sheets, Rose Hip Oil offers a simple, inexpensive, non-invasive alternative for greatly diminishing disfiguring scars.

Scars become softer and less prominent with continued daily use; scars, pits and blemishes (even such acne scars). The area of scar treatment is one where Rose Hip Oil has had immense success.

Indian firebrand extols organic farming, battles biotech

SANTA BARBARA, California_The sari-wearing firebrand who for two decades has fiercely fought biotechnology in her native India was complaining yet again about the men in lab coats who say they know best how to manage the world's food supply.

And the audience was enthralled.

"Ten thousand years of expertise in feeding us is a woman's expertise," Vandana Shiva railed, her forehead dotted with the traditional Hindu bindi. "That work is now being claimed as an invention by a handful of corporations."

The decidedly liberal crowd at the University of California at Santa Barbara whooped and cheered adoringly as Shiva took on the likes of Monsanto Co., a company she sees as bent on overtaking India's centuries-old agricultural practices.

She'll be repeating the message to a less-friendly crowd as she joins demonstrators outside the annual convention of the Biotechnology Industry Organization that opens in San Francisco on Sunday. She'll also be leading anti-biotech workshops.

Then, Shiva is off to deliver the commencement speech at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.

Shiva, who lives on a farm outside New Delhi, brings an image of Third World authenticity to an organic farming crusade that wraps Luddite sensibilities in a fiery anti-imperialistic message. To Shiva, biotechnology is an ecologically dangerous tool for Western corporations to win global domination of agriculture.

Shiva, 51, made her initial mark in the West in the 1980s when she and Jeremy Rifkin were among the few voicing opposition to the then-novel technology of combining genetic material from separate plant species to produce food.

In the developing world, that technology was supposed to help prevent blindness among the millions of poor people whose diets lack vitamin A, by engineering daffodil genes into new, patented varieties of "golden rice."

Shiva led the opposition to the idea, arguing that such high-tech solutions would enslave subsistence farmers to a first-world economic scheme and rob India of its agricultural heritage _ a theme she's expanded on in one way or another in 16 books and hundreds of essays.

The rice has not yet been distributed as the debate continues.

Shiva also has used India's courts to slow down Monsanto's efforts to establish new markets in the world's second most-populous country. Her lawsuits kept the St. Louis-based biotech company from selling its genetically engineered cotton seeds in India until last year _ eight years after it was approved in the United States.

She is now pressing her lawyers to take her fight to the World Trade Organization, where the United States sued the European Union to open up its markets to biotech food.

"Vandana is tireless, a great communicator and she bridges the First World and the Third World," Rifkin said. "She can lecture at the university and be out on the hustings with local villagers."

To biotech proponents, however, she's a false prophet preaching to a small choir of activists while hurting the millions of poor people she claims to protect.

"I believe that Vandana Shiva's notoriety is better known among Western academic and activist circles than in her native country," said C.S. Prakash, a Tuskegee University biotechnology researcher who frequently attacks Shiva in conservative journals. "While she is admired by certain naive elites in the West, her relentless attack on modern farming techniques and open economies can only keep countries like India backward."

But even Prakash admits a grudging respect for the international folk hero.

"Vandana Shiva is probably among the most effective environmentalists in the world," Prakash said. "As a fellow Indian, I'm really proud of her. As an Indian woman she has accomplished so much _ even if she's wrong."

Patrick Moore, the Greenpeace co-founder who became an industry lobbyist, calls Shiva a patronizing elitist who was born to wealth and privilege and revels in her celebrity.

"She knows nothing of the people she's purporting to help," Moore said.

That particular charge upsets Shiva the most. Her parents were middle-class government bureaucrats and farmers during her childhood, she proudly declares, and her entire college career was funded by academic scholarships.

"I scored very high," she said, with trademark bravado.

Shiva, who is divorced and has no children, was educated as a nuclear physicist _ she holds a doctorate from the University of Western Ontario. But activism appears to be, well, a genetic trait.

Her grandfather died in the 1950s during a hunger strike protesting government reluctance to build a school for girls in his town.

"I lost my grandfather for the cause of education of girls," she said proudly.

Shiva's mother was a schools superintendent in Pakistan before becoming a farmer in northern India, and her father was a forestry official who taught her about conservation.

She first dabbled with activism in the late 1970s as part of the women-led "Chipko Movement," which stopped timber companies from harvesting thick Himalayan forests near Tibet.

Then she turned to academics.

But after getting the doctorate, she decided to give up working with subatomic particles and take on global agricultural and environmental issues. She founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, based in New Delhi.

Her transition from academic to activist was completed in the early 1980s as she was worked with the United Nations, exploring international environmental disputes. She made a connection between political violence and Western influence over Indian resources like water and seeds vital to farming.

"I said, ``It's too big. I'm going to save things,'" she recalled. "So I started saving things."

Since then, she has doggedly traveled the world, from South Africa to Canada, unflappably delivering her sermon to anyone who will listen.

Only one question seemed to momentarily trip her up during her time in Santa Barbara: What do you do to relax?

"My life is my hobby," Shiva replied after regaining her composure. "I practice always what I believe."

Agriculture Dept. Rescinds Changes to Organic Food Standards
Published: May 27, 2004

Secretary of Agriculture Ann M. Veneman announced yesterday that she was rescinding changes her department made last month to federal organic food standards.

Last month the department's Agricultural Marketing Services issued what it called clarifications of the standards, allowing antibiotics in dairy cows, certain chemicals in pesticides and livestock feed containing nonorganic fish meal. When the changes were announced they created a firestorm in the organic community.

Ms. Veneman acknowledged the reaction at a news conference yesterday.

"There has been a tremendous amount of interest in this, of concern about what it does," Ms. Veneman said. "This is an issue that has come up in the media over the past couple days" and, she added, "we are taking action to rescind what A.M.S. had done."

Critics of the changes said officials had not consulted with the National Organic Standards Board, an advisory panel of experts, as the law requires. Ms. Veneman said those officials would now work with the board to decide how to deal with the issues.

She said, though, that the marketing services had acted in good faith.

The new directives would have permitted organic dairy animals to be treated for disease with any drug, including antibiotics and growth hormones, and remain on an organic farm, as long as the producer waited 12 months to sell milk from those animals.

They would also have allowed the use of fish meal as a feed supplement for organic livestock even though fish meal can contain synthetic preservatives and contaminants like mercury and PCB's.

And they would have permitted the use of certain pesticides even if the inert ingredients of those pesticides are prohibited.

In explaining the directives, department officials had said they were not creating new rules but establishing the limits of existing regulations.

Senator Patrick J. Leahy, Democrat of Vermont and father of the National Organic Program, which set up the standards two years ago, commended Ms. Veneman for her response.

"The secretary has decided to follow the law and to consult with the National Organic Standards Board, and that is welcome news," Mr. Leahy said. "The organic standards and labeling program is still in its infancy, and this is a critical time for its credibility. This program's credibility has been built with full public and stakeholder participation, and we need to keep it that way."

The withdrawal of the directives came the same day Mr. Leahy began circulating a letter to Senate colleagues for signatures, urging the retraction of the moves.

Gene Revolution: Great Potential For The Poor, But No Panacea

WASHINGTON and ROME, May 17 -- Biotechnology holds great promise for agriculture in developing countries, but so far only farmers in a few developing countries are reaping these benefits, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) said in its annual report The State of Food and Agriculture 2003-04, released today.

Basic food crops of the poor such as cassava, potato, rice and wheat receive little attention by scientists, FAO said.

"Neither the private nor the public sector has invested significantly in new genetic technologies for the so-called 'orphan crops' such as cowpea, millet, sorghum and tef that are critical for the food supply and livelihoods of the world's poorest people," said FAO Director-General Dr Jacques Diouf.

"Other barriers that prevent the poor from accessing and fully benefiting from modern biotechnology include inadequate regulatory procedures, complex intellectual property issues, poorly functioning markets and seed delivery systems, and weak domestic plant breeding capacity," he added.

Biotechnology, one of the tools of the gene revolution, is much more than genetically modified organisms (GMOs), sometimes also called transgenic organisms. While the potential benefits and risks of GMOs need to be carefully assessed case by case, the controversy surrounding transgenics should not distract from the potential offered by other applications of biotechnology such as genomics, marker-assisted breeding and animal vaccines, FAO said.

Food and income needed for an additional 2 billion people

Agriculture will have to sustain an additional 2 billion people over the next 30 years from an increasingly fragile natural resource base. The challenge is to develop technologies that combine several objectives -- increase yields and reduce costs, protect the environment, address consumer concerns for food safety and quality, enhance rural livelihoods and food security, FAO said.

Agricultural research can lift people out of poverty, by boosting agricultural incomes and reducing food prices. More than 70 percent of the world's poor still live in rural areas and depend on agriculture for their survival. Agricultural research -- including biotechnology -- holds an important key to meeting their needs.

Biotechnology should complement -- not replace -- conventional agricultural technologies, FAO said. Biotechnology can speed up conventional breeding programs and may offer solutions where conventional methods fail.

It can provide farmers with disease-free planting materials and develop crops that resist pests and diseases, reducing use of chemicals that harm the environment and human health. It can provide diagnostic tools and vaccines that help control devastating animal diseases. It can improve the nutritional quality of staple foods such as rice and cassava and create new products for health and industrial uses.

But poor farmers can only benefit from biotechnology products if they "have access to them on profitable terms," the report said. "Thus far, these conditions are only being met in a handful of developing countries."

Neglected crops

Research and commercialization data on transgenic crops show that many crops and traits of interest to the poor are being neglected. "There are no major public- or private-sector programs to tackle the critical problems of the poor or targeting crops and animals that they rely on," the report said. A large part of the private-sector investment is concentrated on just four crops: cotton, maize, canola and soybean.

Six countries (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, South Africa and the US), four crops (maize, soybean, canola/rapeseed and cotton) and two traits (insect resistance and herbicide tolerance) accounted for 99 percent of the global area planted in transgenic crops in 2003, the report said.

Where the research money goes

One of the key constraints many developing countries are facing in adopting and adapting biotechnology innovations is their lack of agricultural research capacity particularly in plant and animal breeding, FAO said.

The private-sector research dominates global biotechnology. The world's top ten transnational bioscience corporations spend nearly $3 billion per year on agricultural biotechnology research and development. Private biotech research in most developing countries is negligible.

Brazil, China and India, which have the largest public agricultural research programs in developing countries, spend less than half a billion dollars each annually. The largest international public supplier of agricultural technologies, the CGIAR, has a total annual budget of only about $300 million for crop improvement.

Transgenic crops - an economic success

In the few developing countries where transgenic crops have been introduced, small farmers have gained economically and the use of toxic agro- chemicals has been reduced, FAO said.

"Transgenic crops have delivered large economic benefits to farmers in some areas of the world over the past seven years," the report said. In several cases, per hectare gains have been large when compared with almost any other technological innovation introduced over the past few decades.

In China, for example, more than four million small farmers are growing insect-resistant cotton on about 30 percent of the country's total cotton area. Yields for insect-resistant cotton were about 20 percent higher than for conventional varieties and pesticide costs were around 70 percent lower. Pesticide use was reduced by an estimated 78 000 tonnes in 2001, an amount equal to about one-quarter of the total quantity of chemical pesticides used in China. As a result, cotton farmers experienced fewer pesticide poisonings than those growing conventional varieties.

Even though transgenic crops have been delivered through the private sector in most cases, the benefits have been widely distributed among industry, farmers and consumers. "This suggests that the monopoly position engendered by intellectual property protection does not automatically lead to excessive industry profits," the report said.

Effects on human health and the environment

The scientific evidence concerning the environmental and health impacts of genetic engineering is still emerging, the report said.

"Scientists generally agree that the transgenic crops currently being grown and the foods derived from them are safe to eat, although little is known about their long-term effects," said FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf.

"There is less scientific agreement on the environmental impacts of transgenic crops. The legitimate concerns for the safety of each transgenic product must be addressed prior to its release. Careful monitoring of the post-release effects of these products is essential," Diouf said.

FAO recommends a case-by-case evaluation that considers the potential benefits and risks of individual transgenic crops. The report says that, while some benefits have been observed, adverse environmental effects have not been detected in commercial production. Continued monitoring is needed, FAO stressed.

The report stresses the need for science-based biosafety assessments. "Where crops have not been cleared through biosafety risk assessments, a greater risk of harmful environmental consequences exists. Unauthorized varieties may not provide farmers with the expected level of pest control, leading to continued need for chemical pesticides and a greater risk of the development of pest resistance." Furthermore, neither private companies nor public research institutes can be expected to develop transgenic crops for poor producers in countries that lack reliable, transparent regulatory procedures.

The FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission has agreed on principles and guidelines for assessing health risks related to foods derived from modern biotechnology. Members of the International Plant Protection Convention are developing guidelines for pest-risk analysis for living modified organisms. These agreements can help harmonize regulatory procedures globally.

The clueless Luddite brigade strikes again

Ever heard of this thing called "evolution"? It means organisms in nature are changing in unpredictable (indeed, random) ways all the time, in ways that benefit only the organisms themselves with no utility for anybody else (eg. a little new flu virus called "SARS"?).

Now humans have finally figured out the basics of how to control this process and use it in ways to benefit humanity, eg. "golden rice" with built-in vitamin A to help reduce vitamin deficiencies in the third world, crops with natural pesticides so we don't have to spray (and eat) DDT all over the place... but, no, this is now suddenly Artificial and Evil, and we should all go back to eating moldy potatoes the way Jesus intended us to... What is wrong with you people?

And you can't even conjure up a scarier scenario than, gaps, allergies? Without the tiniest shred of evidence, mind you. I mean, just look at that chain of evidence: you cite the facts that soy beans cause allergies, and then note that there are GM-modified soybeans out there. OK, so what? Maybe the GM will change the soybean so that it doesn't cause allergies anymore -- shouldn't that be a good thing!?

U.N. Comes Out in Favor of Biotech Crops

ROME_A United Nations food agency is coming out in favor of biotech crops, saying genetically modified organisms have already helped small farmers financially, have had some environmental benefits and no ill effects on health.

In a major report released Monday, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said the main problem with agricultural biotechnology to date is that it hasn't spread fast enough to the world's poor farmers and has focused on crops that are mostly of use to big commercial interests.

The report "Agricultural Biotechnology: Meeting the Needs of the Poor?" is likely to fuel the debate about genetically modified, or transgenic crops, at a time when the technology continues to face public opposition in some European and African countries.

Proponents of GM foods say plants that can resist insects and be fortified with extra vitamins are a boon to farmers and consumers. Opponents say the crops pose unknown health and environmental risks and say the ones who benefit most are the multinational corporations who develop and sell GM seeds.

Dr. Harwig de Haen, assistant director-general of FAO's economic and social department, said Monday that biotechnology isn't a panacea to fight world hunger, but that it can help in three major ways: by raising farmers' production and incomes, by increasing food supplies and thus reducing prices, and by contributing to the nutritional quality of crops.

But he said greater regulation was needed and that governments, not just private corporations, must be more involved in the research and development of new seeds to ensure the poor benefit.

"FAO believes that biotechnology, including genetic engineering, can benefit the poor, but that the gains are not guaranteed," he told a news conference.

The United Nation's policy to date had been that it recognized the potential of transgenic crops to help fight world hunger but that case-by-case studies were needed to assess the risks. While that position hasn't changed, the report gives an altogether positive vote to GM technology.

It said transgenic crops currently on the market are safe to eat. It said scientists differ on the environmental impact, noting that genes from GM crops can be transferred to wild species.

However, it said scientists differ on whether that in itself is a bad thing and said what's needed most is more research to asses the environmental consequences of this so-called "gene flow."

The report also pointed out some environmental and health benefits from using transgenic crops. It said reduction in pesticides and toxic herbicides that come with transgenic crops has had "demonstrable health benefits" for farm workers in China.

In addition, it said some GM crops, especially insect-resistant cotton, "are yielding significant economic gains to small farmers."

It noted that while private companies have been largely responsible for selling transgenic seeds, "it is the producers and consumers who are reaping the largest share of the economic benefits of transgenic crops."

"This suggests that the monopoly position engendered by intellectual property protection does not automatically lead to excessive industry profits," it said.

However, FAO said the private sector was focusing too much on technology for crops that benefit big commercial interests, such as maize, soybean, canola and cotton. Basic food crops for the poor, such as cassava, potato, rice and wheat have received little attention from scientists, it said.

In fact, FAO said that 99 percent of the world's land planted with transgenic crops in 2003 is in just six countries: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, South Africa and the United States.

In addition, it said, there are only four main transgenic crops -- maize, soybean, canola and cotton -- and they are engineered for only two traits, insect resistance and herbicide tolerance.

The report is likely to be met with criticism from the anti-biotech camp, including Greenpeace, which has maintained that transgenic crops pose an unacceptable risk to human health and the environment.

Dr. Doreen Stabinsky, a Greenpeace science adviser, said Sunday that the problem of global hunger wasn't a lack of food or inadequate technologies.

"We know there is ample food on the planet. Most of the problems are not technical, they're about access to markets, access to credit, land," she said in a telephone interview. "Hunger is not a problem that needs technical solutions. It needs political will and appropriate policies."

While Stabinsky said she hadn't read the report, she said it appeared to be a political statement by FAO and another attempt by the biotech industry "to convince Europe that they ought to be eating the GM food that's being developed by American companies."

Organic versus biotech
By IAN BISHOP, Banner
Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON -- Moving to protect a robust organic foods market, New England lawmakers have been the most active in the nation in trying to set a standard of integrity for the industry, a non-partisan research group says.

In the Northeast, a region with significant ties to the $12 billion annual organic industry, more bills were introduced in statehouses that attempted to use moratoriums, labeling requirements, and other approaches to curb introduction of agricultural biotechnology in the region, than anywhere else in the country, according to a report released Monday by the Pew Initiative, a Washington-based research group.

On the national stage, the push for stringent organic food standards has been led by Sen. Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat.

Legislative activity in New England statehouses and on Capitol Hill is expected to keep pace with advances in biotechnology agriculture, a rival industry that could threaten the organic market, the study found.

"Agricultural biotechnology presents both challenges and opportunities for organic farmers, so it is not surprising that legislators in the Northeast are trying to address concerns critical to that industry," said Michael Rodemeyer, executive director of the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology. "Going forward, it will be interesting to see how their efforts evolve as genetic engineering technologies are increasingly applied to agriculture."

In the past year, legislators in Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, and New York have introduced six bills imposing moratoria on genetically modified crops or technologies.

Massachusetts, Maine and New York introduced six bills which would establish task forces which, in some cases, would further analyze the potential ramifications of agricultural biotechnology on local markets, the report says.

And Vermont, Connecticut, Maine, New York and Rhode Island have introduced a total of seven bills that encourage or require the labeling of genetically modified foods or which develop criteria for labeling foods as "genetically modified free." On Capitol Hill, Leahy led a successful crusade to require farmers to maintain a process entirely free from chemicals and scientific manipulation in order to have their final product be sold under the organic label.

That standard had been set in 1990, but was wiped out in 2003 before Leahy fought for it to be reinstated.

"Getting the organic standards right was a long and difficult process, but it was a turning point for the industry," Leahy said in a statement. "It shows that organic producers and consumers want the organic label to mean what it says."

Leahy said many farmers in New England have voluntarily switched to the organic farming philosophy, and have found long-term viability in the growing $12 billion industry as a result.

He said many farmers are still in business today because of their switch to the organic process.

"Organic production is the fastest-growing part of the production agriculture sector," said Dave Frederickson, head of the 300,000-member National Farmers Union. "It's an economic opportunity for farmers."

Organic Clothes Make a Fashion Statement

CHICAGO- Some of Scott Leonard's cotton sweaters come in a red called "watermelon" and greens called "mint" and "herb." The similarities to things people eat do not end there. The cotton in the sweaters is organic - grown like organic foods, without chemical pesticides and fertilizers.

Those who believe such chemicals are bad for health and the environment can stack organic alternatives in their closets as well as their pantries.

"There are no nasty chemicals being put into the cotton," said Leonard, marketing director for Indigenous Designs. The Santa Rosa, Calif., company, which sells clothes to stores as well as directly to consumers, displayed its products at the Organic Trade Association's exposition in Chicago this month.

While the cotton may be 100 percent organic, Leonard acknowledges that his company used chemical dyes. "Plant dyes, the colorfastness is horrible," he said.

Organic clothing, including cotton and wool, had a small part in the All Things Organic show, which was dominated by foods. But the organic label is important to some clothes buyers.

These consumers are "concerned about doing something right for the environment," said Matt Hyde, senior vice president for merchandising at REI, the outdoors retail chain based in Kent, Wash.

Some fans of organic clothes take the position that whatever chemicals remain in conventional cotton could get through the skin and affect health.

"A lot of the buyers go organic for health reasons," said Raya Newbold, president of Round Belly Clothing of Shoreview, Minn., which sells maternity and children's wear. Newbold, pregnant with her fourth child, believes "there is no way to go but organic."

The conventional cotton industry disputes that idea.

"The processes that a fabric goes through prior to and during dyeing and finishing would remove any traces of crop-protection products," said Phillip Wakelyn, a senior scientist with the National Cotton Council in Washington. "From a residue-free standpoint, there is no difference between conventionally grown cotton and organic cotton."

As for the environment, conventional cotton growers are sparing with their pest-control chemicals, to control costs, Wakelyn said. Some modern biotech cotton plants even produce their own insecticides.

For most people, however, the bottom line is how the style looks, so REI treats organic as "a bonus," Hyde said. "It's not the No. 1 selling angle we take."

At REI, organic cotton items are single digits or low double-digits compared with overall cotton sales, Hyatt said.

Some customers care a lot and others are mostly interested in something that looks nice, said Jill Vlahos, director of environmental analysis for Patagonia. At the Ventura, Calif.-based outdoors clothing and gear company, the entire cotton product line is 100 percent organic.

Nike began blending small amounts of organic cotton into some clothing in 1998. It now has two organic lines - one 100 percent and the other a blend of organic and conventional fiber. Organic cotton gets about three percent of Nike's overall cotton use, said Jill Zanger, a Nike spokeswoman.

According to the Organic Trade Association's survey of manufacturers, the overall organic fiber market, including clothing and home textiles, grew almost 23 percent in 2003, accounting for about $85 million in U.S. sales.

The amount of organic cotton available is relatively small.

In the 2000-2001 growing season, the world grew an estimated 14 million pounds, less than 1 percent of all cotton production, the Organic Trade Association said. An Agriculture Department cotton expert, Leslie Meyer, said industry estimates are that organic cotton accounts for less than 1 percent of all U.S. cotton.

Leonard said the higher cost of organic cotton fiber, plus the inability to mass produce on the scale of conventional cotton clothing, keeps prices for 100 percent organic clothes as much as 10 percent to 15 percent above conventional clothing.

Organic farming catching on

THE HINDU : A desire to export chemical-free farm products is motivating farmers in the Coimbatore region to opt for organic farming.

"Organic farming is picking up for vegetables and greens, besides orchard crops such as mango, sappota, guava and amla," said K. K. Krishnamurthi, president, Indian Society for Certification of Organic Products (ISCOP).

"It is increasing in Erode district, especially in Gobi and Kodumudi. There are organic farmers in Salem and Coimbatore too. Several engineers, chartered accountants and doctors are taking it up. Most of them have their own farms where organic farming is being carried out traditionally," he said.

Organic agriculture enhanced biodiversity and biological activities so that people could obtain food, feed, fibre and timber without harming the environment.

Cultivation methods used on the farm were meant to "restore, maintain and enhance" ecological harmony.

Organic farmers considered soil fertility the key to increase agricultural yield and boost resistance to crop pests and plant diseases.

Mr. Krishnamurthi said the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority had accredited ISCOP to certify farm products and processes.

To qualify for the certificate, farmers have to follow certain eco-friendly practices such as the use of biofertilizers instead of chemicals and avoid use of fungicides and weedicides.

Certification of organic products was a way of protecting consumers, producers and traders against misleading or deceptive labels. Used as a marketing instrument, it enabled producers to obtain premium prices in the market.

"Tamil Nadu was traditionally organic but people began going for chemical fertilizers when there was shortage of food," he said.

However, over-dependence on chemical fertilizers and pesticides could only end up polluting the soil and atmosphere. In course of time, agricultural yield would begin to drop because of soil exhaustion.

"At one time, organic farmers who wanted certification for their products had to approach foreign agents in Germany, Switzerland, New Zealand and some European countries. They charged heavy amounts, which burdened farmers.

"The Government of India has now realised that it can help farmers by identifying better talent within the country, to do the certification process. It has granted accreditation to organisations like ISCOP, to act as a role model for the country," he said.

In April this year, the society issued organic farm certificates to four farms in Tirunelveli. On May 9, it certified nine farms in the Coimbatore region. These were at Anaikatti, Theenampalayam, Athiyurpudur, Kanuvai, Thenkarai and Telungupalayam. .end (paragraph)<<THE HINDU -- 05/12/04>>
VICTORY FOR The THE PEOPL  38

VICTORY FOR The THE PEOPLE!

GM saga provides inspiring proof that ordinary people CAN defeat conglomerates and politicians . . .

FOR CONSUMERS, it is game and set in the most important contest yet for the future of Britain's food - and, increasingly, it looks as if they will win the match, too.

The announcement this week by Monsanto that it is abandoning plans to introduce genetically modified wheat worldwide is just the latest - and greatest - of a series of humiliating surrenders by the biotech industry.

The giant U.S. company has spent seven years and hundreds of millions of pounds developing the GM wheat, and has promoted it as its flagship crop for the future.

But it was forced to retreat when it became clear that consumers in Britain, Europe and Japan - which eat almost half of American wheat - would refuse to touch it, just as they have already rejected GM soya, beet and oilseed rape.

Rank Hovis, a leading British baker and one of Europe's biggest millers, told American farmers: 'We do not want any level of such grain in our supplies from you.' And the Canadian Wheat Board warned that any introduction of the GM crop could devastate its farming industry through boycotts.

It's been a bad six months for the once all-powerful GM industry as it reels under the weight of growing public opposition.

Last October, Monsanto closed its cereal seed business in Britain and Europe. Just last month, the German-based Bayer CropScience announced it would 'discontinue' its efforts to grow GM maize in Britain.

The Bayer decision was bad news for Tony Blair and his ministers as they had given the maize the go-ahead only weeks before. But this latest move by Monsanto is an even bigger blow: for the first time, consumer power has forced the scrapping of a modified crop worldwide.

Five years ago, when the Mail began its campaign against the introduction of GM food and crops on safety grounds, not even the most starry-eyed would have predicted such victories.

All the power seemed to be on one side. The Prime Minister - with his usual messianic zeal - was bent on making Britain the 'European hub' of biotechnology.

The U.S. administration was urging him on. The scientific establishment - led by the Royal Society - was, if anything, even more evangelistic, arrogantly dismissing anyone who dared to raise awkward questions about GM.

And the Food Standards Agency - charged with safeguarding our food - has consistentlybacked GM and perverselyconcentrated its fire on organic farming instead.

The biotech companies themselves - then the darlings of the world's stock exchanges - seemed irresistible (Monsanto was poised to clinch a merger that would have made it the world's largest corporation) and on the verge of the ultimate victory.

Sixty per cent of all the processed foods in our shops and supermarkets contained GM soya. Widespread cultivation of GM crops throughout Britain was believed to be only a year away. Some crops had already been approved for planting: about 50 others were queuing up for the green light.

Ranged against these apparently unstoppable forces was merely a mounting sense of public unease - and a few questioning voices, including that of Prince Charles and the Mail.

People were alarmed to discover that they were unknowingly buying and eating food containing GM products and that no one in authority had had the courtesy - or courage - to tell them.

Prince Charles announced that he would neither eat GM nor serve it to his guests. And the Mail began asking a series of vital questions that until then had been virtually ignored.

Wasn't there a danger that genes for GM crops would spread, contaminating conventional produce and creating superweeds? Was there really enough evidence that GM crops were safe to eat? Did they actually benefit farmers, as the biotech companies promised?

And was it actually true that they could help solve world hunger?

Ministers and scientists were outraged that these awkward questions were even being asked.

But one by one, the equally disturbing answers have come home to roost, like so many genetically modified chickens.

Study after study has conclusively shown that the genes do spread from GM crops to conventional produce and naturally growing plants - even the Government now accepts this.

Nor is there any real evidence that GM food is safe. In fact, there are virtually no studies to prove it one way or the other.

Indeed, the regulatory authorities effectively wave GM crops through on the untested assumption that they are 'substantially equivalent' to conventional food.

Meanwhile, farmers are increasingly disillusioned with the technology; pesticide use has increased by half in the U.S. over the past eight years - despite the GM industry's claims that its crops reduce the need for it.

In Argentina, the next-biggest grower of GM crops, farms face ecological catastrophe through soil erosion and excessive pesticide use, as the Mail revealed only last week.

At the same time, the main aid agencies, such as Oxfam and Christian Aid, have united in warning that the technology is likely to increase, not reduce, Third World hunger.

As the disturbing answers were unveiled, public opinion hardened. Now, 84 per cent of Britons say they won't let GM pass their lips. Shoppers refuse to buy it, so supermarkets have been forced to take it off their shelves.

Of the 50 GM crops expecting the go-ahead five years ago, only one has got it - and that was the maize that Bayer abandoned last month. Four years ago, there were 159 applications for testing GM crops in the field; this year there is only one.

It all adds up to a stunning defeat for Mr Blair, the first time he has had to ditch one of his passionately promoted causes.

While his Cabinet colleagues and MPs have failed to stop him - as over the issues of foundation hospitals, tuition fees and the Iraq war - the British public has shown who, ultimately, is boss.

But a word of caution: the contest is not over yet. The GM industry, and its backers in governments and the European Commission are planning three late rallies in a desperate bid to snatch victory.

First, the Bush administration has gone to the World Trade Organisation to try to get it to force Europe to take its GM products. Second, Brussels bureaucrats have begun approving GM foods for sale in the EU.

Third, and most sinister of all, the European Commission is trying to push through a measure that would 'allow' normal, non-GM seed to be contaminated with modified grains.

This reflects the fact that GM crops are already widespread in some countries, and unless strictly segregated, some of their seeds will mix with conventional ones. The Commission believes that sanctioning a low level of contamination won't matter.

But although the permitted amounts of contamination are small, spread over Europe's vast harvest they would mean farmers would unwittingly grow up to 2.3 million GM beet and up to 4.5 billion GM oilseed rape plants.

With each flowering, they would spread their genes further, causing more contamination every year. As Labour MP Alan Simpson told Parliament last week: 'The companies promoting GM are down to their last card; contaminate or bust.' They must not succeed. The Government - which, despite everything, still wants to introduce GM here - must disavow these shoddy manoeuvres and respect consumers' wishes to keep Britain GM-free. It will not be forgiven if it continues to defy them. .end (paragraph)<<DAILY MAIL -- 05/12/04>>

Genetically Modified Foods: A Concern for the Allergic
 From Judy Tidwell,
Your Guide to Allergies.

Do They Cause Allergic Reactions?
Genetically modified (GM) foods should be a concern for those who suffer from food allergies because they are not tested, regulated, or required to be labeled.
What Are GM Foods?
When gene technology is used to alter the genetic make up of any food crop, food ingredient or animal product it is considered to be genetically modified. Foreign proteins are spliced into common foods products making them genetically modified.

Other names used in describing these products include: Genetically Engineered (GE) and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).

Soy beans, corn, canola (rapeseed) and cotton are the most widely grown GMO crops. Almost all of these crops are either "insect resistant" or "herbicide tolerant". The list also includes: peppers, peanuts, potatoes, sugar beets, sunflowers, and tomatoes.

Why Should We Be Concerned?
There is concern that GM foods pose an allergy risk.

Currently the list of GM food products intersect with the eight most common food allergens: eggs, milk, fish, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, and wheat.
Proteins in food are what trigger most allergic reactions in people. Most of the foreign proteins being gene-spliced into foods have never been eaten by humans before or tested for their safety.

There also is no mandatory labeling of genetically modified foods. Those who suffer from food allergies have no way of knowing if the food they purchase contains GM foods.

StarLink Found in Human Food Supply
A genetically engineered corn, Starlink, contains a special protein that takes longer than normal to break down in the digestive system. For this reason, it has NOT been approved for human consumption. However, it was discovered in the human food chain in the year 2000.

Scientists believe a protein's ability to withstand heat and gastric juices may cause an allergic reaction. Some allergy producing foods, such as peanuts, have this same characteristic.

BMJ.com quoted Representative Dennis Kucinich, an Ohio Democrat, who has sponsored bills requiring labeling and safety testing of all genetically engineered food, as saying, "It concerns me, and should concern American consumers, that this is a glimpse of things to come as genetically engineered products are rushed to store shelves without real mandatory safety testing and labeling programs in place."

What Visitors Have to Say
GM foods have been a topic on the Allergies Forum. Here is a sampling of what is being discussed:

DONNIEJ: "These GM foods have been dumped on the market, untested, unregulated, and unlabeled. I feel that I've been used as a lab rat! Now that I've eliminated almost all traces of GM foods, I feel better then I had in several years. I still encounter allergens, once in awhile, but I'm not reacting constantly, like I was before."
JRANDERSON30: "My name is John Anderson. I am an activist for the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) and Greenpeace against GE foods. Our groups are totally against GE foods as well as GE anything (i.e. trees, cotton, fish, etc.). The "safeness" of GE foods as per the U.S. Regulatory Agencies are not accurate and not to be trusted."

Organic Rosehip Oil

Most people may be familiar with rosehips as a rich source of vitamin C which is made into a drink for babies and young children. It is this natural vitamin C, in the form of essential fatty acids, which retains and attracts moisture for healthier and more youthful looking skin.

Wild rose bush grows in the cool lush mountains valleys of the Andes. The rosehip oil is obtained from the seeds contained intensely red berry-like fruit - or hips - of the bush. Seeds are collected and carefully processed to obtain a high concentration of vitamin C in the form of essential fatty acids which provide remarkable tissue-regenerating and rejuvenating effects.

This wild rose is known by the people of Chile as "Rosa Mosqueta", and by scientists as Rosa Affinis Rubiginosa. It's skin healing properties were a well kept secret of the native people of Chile for centuries.

In fact, rosehip oil has been used by South Americans for generations to treat dry skin, help reduce signs of premature ageing and fade off blemishes such as dry skin ,pigmentation spots, stretch mark ,acne scars and sun spots. It has also proven to be particularly effective in the treatment of scars and burns by improving skin quality, colour and texture. This applies to accidental and surgical scarring and skin which has been damaged by acne.

A good health article for our awareness. Be aware!

ASPARTAME - THE SILENT KILLER
-------------------------------------------------------
Copyright Ron Harder 2002

There is an epidemic across North America today of Multiple Sclerosis and Lupus. Most people do not understand why this epidemic is happening, and they do not know why these diseases are so rampant. I would like to share with you the

Many people today use artificial sweeteners in their tea or coffee. They do this because the ads they see on TV tell them that sugar is bad for their health. This is absolutely true. Sugar is toxic to us, but, what most people use as a replacement for sugar is much more deadly.

I am talking about Aspartame. It is the cause of the epidemic that was mentioned above. Aspartame is an extremely toxic chemical that is produced by a chemical company called Monsanto.

Aspartame is being marketed around the world as a sugar substitute and is found in all diet soft drinks, such as Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi. It is also found in artificial sweeteners such as NutraSweet, Equal, and Spoonful; and
it is used in many other products as a sugar replacement.

Aspartame is marketed as a diet product, but it is not a diet product at all. In fact, it will cause you to GAIN weight because it makes you crave carbohydrates. Aspartame is extremely poisonous & a toxic chemical that changes the brain's chemistry. It can and does cause severe seizures.
This chemical changes the dopamine level in the brain, and it is particularly deadly for anyone suffering from Parkinson's disease.

One of the toxic ingredients of Aspartame is wood alcohol. When the temperature of Aspartame exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in the Aspartame is converted to formaldehyde, and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis.

Formaldehyde is grouped in the same class of poisons as Cyanide and Arsenic- which are very deadly toxins. The only difference is... Formaldehyde kills quietly, and it takes a little longer. And, in the process of killing people, it causes all kinds of neurological problems.

There are 92 documented symptoms of Aspartame Poisoning leading to coma and death. The majority of these symptoms are neurological, because the Aspartame attacks and destroys the nervous system. Some of the symptoms of Aspartame Poisoning are covered below.

One of these symptoms is Lupus, which has become almost as rampant as Multiple Sclerosis, especially with Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers.

When someone develops Lupus as a result of using Aspartame, they usually do not know that the Aspartame is the culprit. They then continue to use Aspartame, which aggravates the Lupus to such a degree that it sometimes becomes life threatening.

When people finally get off the Aspartame, the severity of the Lupus decreases. It is generally believed that once you develop Lupus, you will have it for the rest of your life, but this is not so. Lupus can be defeated with some very special treatment.

Aspartame Poisoning is also very often diagnosed as Multiple Sclerosis. The methanol toxicity mimics Multiple Sclerosis, and therefore, people are being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when in fact they do not have
it.

Multiple Sclerosis is not a death sentence, where Methanol Toxicity usually is.

When those who suffer from Aspartame Poisoning stop using Aspartame, most of the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis disappear. There are many cases where someone's vision has returned, and even their hearing has returned.

We have a very serious problem here. More and more people who are heavy Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers are being diagnosed with MS.

This also applies to other diseases. If you are using Aspartame and you suffer from Fibromyalgia symptoms such as spasms, shooting pains, numbness in your legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, joint
pain, depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory loss, you probably do not have Fibromyalgia, you very likely have Aspartame Poisoning.

At the Conference of the American College of Physicians, doctors admitted that they did not know the cause of the epidemic in MS and Lupus. It is believed that the phenylalanine in the Aspartame breaks down the seizure
threshold and depletes Serotonin, which causes manic depression, panic attacks, rage, and violence.

According to the Conference of the American College of Physicians, "We are talking about a plague of neurological diseases caused by this deadly poison".

Aspartame is especially deadly for diabetics. All physicians know what wood alcohol will do to a diabetic. There are many cases where physicians believe they have a patient with etinopathy, when in fact, the problem
is caused by Aspartame. The Aspartame keeps the blood sugar level out of control, causing many patients to go into a coma. Unfortunately, many diabetics who have used Aspartame have died.

There are many recorded cases where diabetics have switched from Saccharin to an aspartame product, and many of these people have eventually gone into a coma. Their physicians could not get the blood sugar levels under control. Thus, the patients suffered acute memory loss, and eventually coma and death.

Two prominent Doctors, Dr. Blaylock and Dr. H. J. Roberts, have written books on aspartame Poisoning. Dr. Blaylock's book is entitled: "EXCITOTOXINS: THE TASTE THAT KILLS". Dr. H.J. Roberts, diabetic specialist and world expert on Aspartame Poisoning, has written a book entitled
"DEFENSE AGAINST ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE".

Dr. Roberts realized what was happening when Aspartame was first marketed and used. He said that his diabetic patients who used Aspartame presented memory loss, confusion, and severe vision loss". The methanol in the Aspartame converts to Formaldehyde in the retina of the eye, and causes people to go blind.

Memory loss is due to the fact that aspartic acid and phenylalanine are neurotoxic without the other amino acids found in protein. Thus it goes past the blood brain barrier and deteriorates the neurons of the brain.

Dr. Roberts tells how Aspartame Poisoning is escalating Alzheimer's disease. Women of 30 years of age are being admitted that have developed Alzheimer's disease as a result of using Aspartame.

Aspartame Disease is partially the cause of what is behind some of the mystery of the Desert Storm health problems (Gulf War Syndrome). The burning tongue and other problems discussed in over 60 cases can be directly related to the consumption of an Aspartame product.

Several thousand pallets of diet drinks were shipped to the Desert Storm troops. (Remember that heat can liberate the methanol from the Aspartame at 86 degrees F). These diet drinks sat on pallets in the 120-degree F. Arabian sun for weeks at a time. The service men and women drank them
all day long, and all of their symptoms are identical to Aspartame Poisoning.

According to Dr. Roberts, another serious problem is that consuming Aspartame during pregnancy can cause birth defects. When the Aspartame attacks the nervous system it does not allow the unborn child to develop properly.

Aspartame consumption has also been shown to lead to cancer. In the original lab tests on Aspartame, animals that were given Aspartame developed brain tumours. The phenylalanine breaks down into DXP, which is a brain tumour agent.

How serious is this Aspartame Poisoning? A mother who had a child on NutraSweet was told to get her child off the product. The child was having grand mal seizures every day. The mother spoke to her doctor, who called the ADA, who told the doctor not to take the child off the NutraSweet. They are still trying to convince the mother that the Aspartame is causing the seizures. Every time you take a grand mal seizure victim off of Aspartame, the seizures stop.

Here is the major problem. Congressional Hearings were held when Aspartame was originally approved for use in 100 different products. Since that initial hearing, there have been two more hearings to try to ban this product, but to no avail. The drug and chemical lobbies have very deep pockets.

This list of 100 has now expanded to where there are over 5,000 products containing this chemical, and the patent has expired. Also, Aspartame is now available in over 90 countries around the world.

There is a bit of hope. Stevia, a sweet herb which helps in the metabolism of sugar, and which is proving to be ideal for diabetics, has now been approved as a dietary supplement by the F.D.A. For years, the F.D.A. had outlawed this sweet food because of their loyalty to Monsanto.

I assure you that MONSANTO, the creator of Aspartame, knows exactly how deadly their product is. They fund the American Diabetes Association, the American Dietetic Association, Congress, and the Conference of the American College of Physicians. They have the contacts and the power to keep
their product on the market. Public health means nothing to these people, it's all about making money.

Senator Howard Hetzenbaum wrote a bill that would have warned all pregnant mothers and children of the dangers of Aspartame. The bill would also have instituted independent studies on the problems existing in the population seizures, changes in brain chemistry, changes in neurological and behavioural symptoms). It was killed by the powerful drug and chemical lobbies, letting loose the hounds of disease and death.

We ask that you help to get the word out about Aspartame. Print this article and distribute it to everyone you know. There are a lot of people out there who must be warned, PLEASE let them know this information. You might want to print it out, hand it to your friends, or fax it to people
who are not online.

Young people drink a lot of Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi, and because of this, they are the most susceptible to Aspartame Poisoning. Please let your children know about the toxins in these drinks.

A large number of adults use Nutrasweet, Equal, or Spoonful. They also need to be warned of the dangers in those products.

And, very importantly, do not consume anything that has Aspartame in it. If it says "Sugar Free" on the label, you know that it contains Aspartame. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT.

One other thing, and this is for your own benefit. Go to the Search Engine "Google" and do a search using the search word "Aspartame". You will be surprised by what you will find.

Hi
While surfing the net, I found the following article from The Gourmet Retailer which I would like to share with the organic community

"Report Supports Claim that Organic is Better for You

The UK’s Soil Association in a report entitled "Organic Farming, Food Quality and Human Health" presents evidence that indicates that organic food is both "safer and better for you than nonorganic food." While the report states that much more research is needed, it does conclude that consumers wanting to improve their intake of minerals and vitamin C, while reducing exposure to potentially harmful pesticide residues and food additives could do so by consuming organically grown foods. The results contradict remarks made last year by the head of UK Food Standards Agency who said that there was no evidence that organic food was better for consumers than food produced using conventional farming and production methods."

Cheers!

Hi
The best way is to store grains in a cool and dry place. Preferably below 18C. The cooler it is the longer it will last. Airtight container without moisture or condensation will prolong shelf life of grains significantly; last anywhere from 3 to 12 months in normal bulk double layered paper bags. If organic, normally will not last more than 6 months unless stored in a dry chiller. If inorganic, normally already fumigated and irradiated at the silo after harvest, so may last even 2 years but quality will not be good. If in humid tropical conditions, temperature controlled environment is necessary.

Dear Puzzled,

Researches indicate beetroot alleviates many kidney
disorders, as well as constipation. Beetroot may have
anti cancer properties. You did not mentioned if your cousin is drinking fresh beetroot juice for the
first time. One of the reasons is the detoxifying effect, may have caused the body to react suddenly. Another reason is that your cousin may have a sensitive stomach.

A glass or a cup (about 250 ml) of beetroot juice
is quite strong for those who are not used to fresh juice
drinking.

Cautionary actions for those who are taking fresh
juices for the first time:

1. Do not take fresh juice with an empty stomach.
2. Take a little each time about 25 to 50 ml and dilute
the juice with water say 30% water and 70% juice, or
even up to 50% water if you are sensitive to it.
3. Do not glup the juice down "Bottom's Up" It may react
likewise. Drink it gradually, like a beveage.
4. Build up the juice concentration and the amount
    gradually.
4. Listen to your body. If you feel uncomfortable, reduce
    the quantity for consumption.
5. Do not rush and expect immediate positive result. It
    may not happen.

My son drank 25 ml of fresh wheat grass juice neat on an
empty stomach, and suffered an identical result like your
cousin. To counter act the negative effect, he had to
gradually drink a glass of warm water, and rested. It took him a few hours to recover.

Please tell your cousin to "Take It Easy" and "Slowly
Slowly Catchy Monkey".

Cheers, Happy and Healthy Drinking.

The Magic of Garlic

I can vow for the magic of garlic; it works for me.

I woke up with a bad cold that left me weak and achy to the bones. I sought Tom's help and followed the course given on fighting cold with garlic. I washed down a tablespoon of cut raw garlic with warm water every two hours throughout the day. On the second intake of garlic, I was relieved of my aching throat and the ability to sit up. Throughout the day, I was perspiring and did two-change of T-shirts. I noticed that my body aches disappeared after my fourth intake of garlic. The next day, I was feeling well, energetic and fully recovered...all for a total of 7 intakes of garlic.

Under western medication, I would take over a week to recover. Also, western medication makes you drowsy and weak. Garlic doesn't. I would strongly recommend anyone with a cold to try this out...it really works!

Cheers!
