To Edit a picture in FrontPage click it once to select it and the Picture toolbar will appear.

The Picture Toolbar has lots of useful features but it's still not as good as a real photo-editing program, like the one that comes with FrontPage (Photo Editor).

To edit a picture in a separate program, double click it.
If FrontPage tells you that it has no Picture Editor assigned, clickok, then select Tools | Options, click the Configure Editors tab, click the Add button, and then in the 'Add Editor Association' dialog box, enter the file extension, the name of the editor, and the location of the program. Which should be:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PhotoEd

Resizing a picture by dragging one of the side handles will change the aspect ration of the image, making it appear stretched unless this is intentional resize the picture by dragging one of the corner handles.

To resize a picture to some precise height or width, right-click on it and choose properties from the pop up menu, then select the Appearance tab and check 'Specify Size, enter the height of width of the image in pixels or as a percentage of the original size. You can also increase
the horizontal or vertical spacing around a picture if you find your text or other content is lying too close to the picture.

Make sure that after you have resized a picture you resample it, this is because in doing so you change the file size of the image files itself, plus it can sharpen up the picture. If a picture is too small or has not been resized then this feature will be greyed out.

If you want to change the format of a picture or overrule FrontPage's rule of converting 256-colour (and less) images to Gifs and greater to Jpegs, right click the picture to select it and choose Picture Properties from the popup menu. Go to the General tab.

To convert to Gif format, click the gif radio button and check Transparent if you want the gif to have a transparent colour, and interlaced if you want the gif to load more quickly.

To convert to jpeg format, click the jpeg radio button, and choose the percentage of the original file size to which you would like to compress the image.

Note: The lower the number the lower the quality, the default optimal setting is 75.

Increase the number of 'Progressive Passes' box if you want the jpeg to seem to appear more quickly--which will be at the cost of more downloading overall. The default is four passes.

You may need to spell check a page in another language how do you do that?

Right click on a page and select Page Properties. Go to the Language tab and select the language of your choice from
the 'Mark Current Document As' dropdown list. This informs FP which language you have selected for example German.

Now when you spell check by Tools | Spelling FP will then prompt you to install the German proofing tools. For this you will need your CD, once this has been installed it will spell check the document against the German dictionary.

Most times themes are contained in a zip file when you download them. Here is what you need to do once you download the file:

1. Open the zip file

2. Unzip all the files (using a program such as Winzip, which can be found at http://www.winzip.com )

Note: unzip each theme to a separate folder and make sure that the name of the folder is the name of the .elm file below are the two paths for fp98 and fp2k.

FrontPage 98 -

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Front Page\Themes\*
FrontPage 2000 -

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Themes\*
*(Insert name of folder for theme here)

3. Open Microsoft FrontPage

4. For FrontPage 98 - Apply the theme by going to the themes view and selecting it.

For FrontPage 2000 - Apply the theme by going to the Format menu and selecting 'Theme'.

If, for any reason, you need to change the name of a file
or folder on your Web site, FrontPage will automatically
update all the file's associated hyperlinks. You can rename
a file in several ways, but it's easiest to follow these
steps:

1. In the Folders, All Files, or Navigation View, click the filename to select it and then right click and choose 'rename'

A box appears around the filename, and the filename is
highlighted.

2. Type a new name.

Make sure to keep the same three-letter extension so that
the Explorer knows what kind of file you're renaming, though you can change this as well make sure it is one that FrontPage supports.

3. Click away from the box

If the file contains associated links, the Rename dialog
box appears, asking if you'd like to update the links to
reflect the new name.

4. Click Yes.

The dialog box will close and FrontPage automatically updates the links.

If your having trouble logging on to your site and your password and user name won't work, your PC starts crunching away, but you can still get into other folders on the same server with no problem you just may need to delete your dot-web (.web) file.

Do a search on your drive

Start Menu | Find | Files or folders
Insert ".web" (without quotes)

The name of the file will indicate which web it refers to.
Delete the .web file which relates to the Web your having problems with. Then FrontPage should connect with no problem.
