Hello,

I am the happy owner of Royal Enfield Bullet 350 cc 1952. Somebody knows it how many Bullet were produced to Redditch in 1952?
What is the number to be taken into account for the dating of the motorcycle? The number on the left driving crankcase (G2/23364) or the number situated on the gearbox (G 5392)?

Many thanks in advance.

Best Regards

Nelska from Tahiti - French Polynesia

Nelska,

The best source of the information you seek is available by joining the Royal Enfield Owners' Club in the UK. They have the original factory records and are the only really accurate source.

You can reach them at the following link:

 http://www.royalenfield.org.uk/

The frame and engine numbers are the only ones to go by.

I purchased a RE 500 1995 miltary and I would like to purchase a entire engine assembled to drop straight in; instead of rebuilding the old. Is this possible? If I can get a 535cc or higher performance for it would be nice. Would India sell me one directly or should I splurge and go to England? Anything closer?

Does anyone out there know a source on the internet where I can get at a 1948 Model J2 manual or parts list?

Make it sound more powerful? Or noisier? Increased
noise does not mean more power. But if you want to
make it noisier, remove that pipe that is called a
silencer. It is there to make it quieter and more
powerful!

If it is leaking oil, find out where the oil is
leaking from and stop it. If you can tell us where the
oil is leaking from, someone may be able to tell you
how to stop it. Otherwise, without seeing the bike,
it's guesswork isn't it? Suggest you speak to the
mechanic again and ask him which nuts and bolts he
means! There are quite a lot on an Enfield!

My first road bike was a Royal Enfield Crusader sports Reg 129 RVK . I am wondering if it has been restored or otherwise.I purchased it secondhand from Tom Cowie Motorcycles in Newcastle upon Tyne for my 16 birthday. Any history would be appreciated.

Hi Pablo,

Here are some answers:

1. The headlight is an 8" unit

2. The battery/coil ignition is usually made by Miller on these models. The ignition coil clamps with a small metal bracket to a frame tube ... the location is not critical, but ideally should be near the spark plug.
3. Your choice of switch really depends on what you plan to do for a voltage regulator. The original dynamo is one of those horrible 3-brush types, and should you choose to retain it, you will need a switch that is made for that purpose ... they are easily recognizable because they have a wire-wound resistor built onto them. You can get reproductions of that switch, but they are very poorly made.

I could get you a proper part number for the Miller switch, but I would recommend against using one because the 3-brush system is well-known for destroying your battery. Much better to convert your dynamo /generator to a 2 brush configuration and use it with a modern voltage regulator like the PODtronics (as made for 6V dynamos). That way, you can use the newer type of Lucas (or other) switch without the resistor, and the whole thing will operate much better.

By the way, if you need one, I have for sale a complete Miller dynamo with the built-in points unit as used on these bikes.

I bought a 500cc Silver Bullet Sixty Five in 2005. It is 25 years since I had a motorbike and I want to learn how to do the basics. Is there the equivalent of a Haynes manual for my bike? and if so where can I buy one please?

thanks

In a previous message to the spanish chap you talk about the miller dynamo. I have a 1935 RE tradesmans delivery tricycle with a 225cc 2 stroke engine with a Coventry ETC carb, hand gear change 3 speed, and a Lucas dynamo which has contact breakers at one end, it seems to have a condensor fitted inside a bakerlite endcap as well. Does this system work well? or should I try to alter the system at all.

Sorry Gary, I overlooked answering your question about the condensor (capacitor) located in the bakelite end cap. It will no doubt be bad, and thus cause a weak spark.

So, it's a good idea to replace it with a new capacitor, which can be mounted outside the housing if you prefer.

Hello Gary,

As long as the dynamo armature windings and field coil are in good shape, it can be made to work well using modern technology. The thing to do is to convert the dynamo to a 2-brush configuration and replace the horrible mechanical regulator with a modern electronic one.

Also, get rid of the original battery, and replace it with a modern Gelled-Lead-Acid battery, or even better, an Absorbent-Glass-Matt battery. These types have vastly improved capacity, will not discharge significantly during storage, and they will not leak.

I recently updated such a system on a 1936 Panther for a local chap. Sadly however, his original Miller dynamo had been very badly damaged by some brutal attacks by someone who had no repair finesse whatever, and the back end of the dynamo housing with the points assembly was broken into 4 pieces! I made a jig and was able to TIG-weld the 4 segments of the broken casting back together, and re-machine the required details. Once I completed the electrical mods, the system worked very well.
