My late brother served on the Ticonderoga back in early mid 1970'ish, sorry don't know exact dates but know it was prior to 1974. Anyone out there that was aboard ship at that time?

I always liked if it flies, it dies. I seem to remember several cruise t-shirts with that on it. Also, we always referred to her as The Tico

I remember that. "Star Wars" is what everyone used to refer to Ticonderoga because it was the first Aegis cruiser which utilized a radically new weapons control system the world had never seen, much like the stuff they had in the movie. At that time there was nothing like it anywhere in the world and it was the first.
When I picked my orders at "A" school, that is what the chief said to me, "You're going to 'Star Wars'. Very exciting.
Other phrases that was popular among the crew, "If it flies, it dies."
"First and Formidable" was the ship's motto.
"Eyes of the Fleet"
Maybe someone can come up with something better.
I just want to say how excited I am to see this coming together. I am so very grateful to you and the others in the committee that are volunteering their valuable time to this icon of U. S. Naval history. Thank you very much.
Sincerest regards, Bill Deery

Delores,
During the earliest days of Ticonderoga history, Star Wars was a common association. We used the Star Wars theme as our "Breakaway Song" for the first few years. I don't recall a specific mascot or logo.

Most Revered Sailors, I am the Exec Sec. of the Ticonderoga Project in Pascagoula, MS. The project is speeding up a little. The engineering feasibility study in underway and should be finished in about 6 weeks. We are all of the opinion that it will go well for us.
I would like to know if you had a logo or favorite sign (mascot) for the ship. The U.S.S. Kidd has Captain Kidd, the U.S.S. Brown had Charlie Brown, and so on. Did you have something identifiable that we could use in marketing the ship?
Thanks for your help and keep up with us through Bill Deery or Adm. Guilbault.

I am assisting a veteran with a VA Claim. He was aboard the USS Ticondertoga 1968 to 1970. While off the water of Vietnam he witnessed a cold catapult. The fighter pilot was unable to control the jet and hit the water and was KIA. The VA wants the exact date and the name of the Pilot if possible. Does anyone remember this incident? My e-mail is dubvet@dbqco.org

Hey all,
The latest on the Maritime Museum project is the group from Pascagoula recently went to the State Capitol in Jackson, MS. The group is eyeing some land that I believe is north of US Highway 90 for the museum. It's got great visibility from US 90, but the catch is that it's state owned and there are some tentative plans to develop it. The group is seeking to have the museum included in the development plans.
Other news... Enough funds have been raised to get the feasibility and engineering studies started. I think they have chosen a group to do the feasibility, but I am not sure. I have to check with David. These are the first of many steps that have to be taken before we can put lines on her and get her moved. There are voluminous details that have to be worked out and we are just getting started, but progress is being made. The Navy has given the group an extension, so for now, she sits in Phily. Things are moving along, but just like anything else where the government is involved, they move relatively slower than we would like.
If you want to get involved, the easiest way is to DONATE. You can do that through the web site, www.bringtheticohome.org. With tax time approaching, any donations are still tax deductible, provided you don't make more than $250,000/yr. Can't have acheivers making too much money, (political comment intended). GET INVOLVED TODAY.

Guys, We haven't heard any news lately about Tico. She's still in Philly. This group was trying to install her as a museum in Pascagoula, but I don't know where that stands: http://www.bringtheticohome.org/events.htmlSteve (and others): We'd love to post any Tico photos you might have. If interested, contact us at info@ussticonderoga.com to make arrangements. Joe
