The following story was in the October 15, 2008 edition of the Press Republican. It is near Ticonderoga New York.
TICONDEROGA Instead of being turned into scrap metal, the USS Ticonderoga could become a floating museum.
That idea is exciting to many people in Ticonderoga, which had a close relationship with the guided-missile cruiser and its crew before the vessel was decommissioned.
Since 2004, the Ticonderoga has been sitting at the Inactive Ships Maintenance Facility in Philadelphia waiting for final disposition.
But a group of Pascagoula, Miss., residents and Navy veterans have come to its rescue. The guided-missile cruiser would be the showpiece of the proposed Mississippi Maritime and Warship Museum on the east bank of Pascagoula, near Interstate 10.
The Ticonderoga was last based in Pascagoula and was built at Ingalls Shipyard there in 1983. It was the first Aegis-class ship and was equipped with what were then state-of-the-art weapons and electronic-warfare systems.
IDLE SINCE 2004
On Sept. 30, 2004, the USS Ticonderoga (CG 47) was decommissioned at Naval Station Pascagoula, Miss., a victim of Navy cost-cutting.
Many Ticonderoga residents, including Town Supervisor Robert C. Dedrick, attended the ceremony.
We met with the veterans committee at the decommissioning, he said. I never saw a group more dedicated to doing something. No matter what happened, it was not going to be scrapped.
The committee had about 200 members, he said.
They approached the town to come up with fundraising items. We sold hats, coins, stickers, and the money we raised was sent to the fund.
So far, $50,000 has been raised, enough for the engineering study on how to move the ship and establish the museum.

My father served in the Navy on the Ticonderoga during Vietnam. For Christmas I'm looking to get him a new peacoat since his fell into the hands of his sisters not long after he returned home from duty. I'd love to be able to put a rating badge on it for him but I can't find one for a radarman since the job doesn't exist anymore. Could anyone tell me where I might be able to get my hands on one? I'd be grateful!

Lauren,
Just about any Army/Navy surplus store will have peacoats. If you don't have any luck, I know of a couple of stores in the Greater Orlando, FL area that might be able to help you out. For that matter, search the web for Navy surplus. Who knows, you might even find a radarman rating badge. Perhaps a Fire Control Tech or Operations Specialist would suffice. God bless and good luck.

Attention sea fairing veterans serving during 1958-1966. Garry Dressen passed away 12/29/2008 in Portland, Oregon. There will be a service held in his honor at St. Aloysius Church in Spokane, Washington on 01/10/2008 @ 9:30am. He spoke very fondly of all his fellow sailors. He would want everyone to celebrate his life, not mourn his death.

I am in need of some information. There was a US Navy Carrier stationed off he coast of South Korea in the spring of 1962. That carrier launched at least one spray plane to spray the DMZ. That plane came under fire from the NOrth Koreans while spraying the DMZ. My husband helped save the life of the Pilot and crew could that plane come from your ship and if so do you know who was piloting it. My email is:msba.wright@gmail.com

I am trying to do some research for my mother. Her father was on the ship Ticonderoga in World War II. We do not have very much info about him. His name is Ernest Willie Moore. He was from Georgia, the Atlanta area we THINK. We know he was on the ship when it was struck by the Japenese. He survived in the ocean for several days before being rescued. He lived for MAYBE a year after being rescued, and then died of spinal meningitis. Any info you can provide us with we will be so grateful. Please feel free to email me at ztaashlie@yahoo.com even if you have no information if you could point me in the right direction to do research. Thank you so much and God bless..

I have been looking for a former sailor on the Ticonderoga. His name is Marty Kruse. After leaving the ship, he was stationed at Fallon Naval Air Station in Fallon, Nv. and then after he left the service was cooking at the Golden Nuggett in Carson City, Nevada. If anyone is in touch with him, please give him my email address: rinilini@hotmail.com
Muchas Gracias
