I spoke to Captain Skellen earlier today and he has suggested October 11th, as it's far enough in advance that people (hopefully) won't have things planned. How's that?

Hiya!
No, I think next Saturday is a no-go, mainly 'cos I'm not in the UK that weekend! And the following Saturday is DaveC's Birthday meal. I think Captain Skellen might've had a date in mind... Captain?

Sounds good to me! Would really like to give this Castle Wolfenstein a good go at a LAN, as well as the 'usuals'.
Although it doesn't make much sense geography-wise and isn't very practical, I will offer my place as a venue.
Happy to come down to you guys of course!

I believe that we should start thinking about having another LAN Session in the near-ish future, as various people have asked me when we were going to play again. Any thoughts from anyone?

Nice one JC!!
As it goes we need not fear the raising of the Crawleys on Saturday morning as I will be staying Friday night so will be in my usual role as official "Waker of the Dead" :-)
See you all next week I'm already looking forward to sunday night when all my dreams and every time I close my eyes all I will be able to see is flashbangs and figures with guns!! :-)

Afternoon one and all.....
Thought I'd just post a very quick "hello" and maybe get everyone to badger AM to find out dates that his house will be free for a weekend of slaughter.....
WRT pics of the last session, the one of me *is* a classic, so I'm going to badger Saint to scan it and we'll get it emailed round. It'll be sent to home email addresses, as it's a bit risque!! ;-)
See ya all later!

Quite... I have explained the reasons for this... We're currently in the process of getting the house ready for selling. The house needs to be in a state for viewing VERY soon. Therefore, I have work to do.... So fuck off... ;-)

We've got loads of developers and testers, so no lack of cannon fodder! It's open season on geeks!
Reminds me of my younger days... Making crossbows out of pencils, rubber bands, clothes pegs and thumb tacks! The ammunition was a small, carefully cut pience of eraser with a pin stuck through it.... Agony! ;-)

JC: Certainly... For Your very own 'Blutak Shooter' you will need:
2 x Plastic tubes from the center of a fax roll 2 x Generous strip of Accutest Parcel Tape 2 x Packet of Blutak 1 x Laser pointer
Join the 2 fax roll tubes together, end to end, and bind securely together using one length of accutest tape, to form a barrel of around 50cm in length, tape the laser pointer securely to the barrel, with the laser pointing AWAY from the end which you intend to blow down.
Take several pieces of blutak and roll into marble sized lumps, trying to keep them as spherical as possible. Once you have completed the ammunition, you are ready to fire.
Just drop the blutak 'shell' down the barrel, switch on the laser sight, aim at your geeky victim, making sure that the dot of the sight is fixed firmly between his eyes... and Fire...
Happy Hunting Chuckles... ;-)

That's great news! We have our eight... I'm going to start creating a standard build CD on a CDRW, with all the updates, patches etc we might need on it. Can anyone think of anything else we might need apart from the following:
DirectX v8.0 nVidia reference drivers Voodoo 2 & 3 reference drivers Half Life latest patch (1.1.0.4) Counterstrike v1.0 Unreal Tournament latest patch 436 FreeSpace 2 patch 1.2
Basically, I want to create a single CD with everything on we might need and update it as games / OS / drivers get updated. Anything more? What mods should I include? HM? Anyone?

Bonjour my fellow had no sleep and not quite ready for a day of work type chaps!!
i have spoken to Johnny Boy but he is playing hard to get fair play really as I only let him know at the last minute. He is trying to get tickets for Twickers on Saturday so he will come if he doesn't get tickets for that. I have tried hurrying him this morning but he aint that fast!! :-)
So in short i don't know how viable an option he is probably more trouble than he's worth to be honest!!

Lo chaps, all gone a bit quiet.
Hope you're all still on for next weekend. Have you made any arrangements for the Friday yet?
To let you know, I will be in London for a 10am meeting that day, but have said I'm unlikely to be able to stay around for the 2pm meeting. Anyone question my commitment? :) So, I should be back in Narrich around 4ish, which I hope fits in with your plans......
Having said all that, if you're not planning on arriving til later, then I'll be able to attend this other meeting. Can you let me know?
I've borrowed an IKEA 2001 catalogue to have a look at the tables, and they've got plenty of cheap (and perfectly suitable ones) to choose from. Just hope they're not out of stock if you're going on the way up!

Sevenoaks was actually one of the first to be ADSL capable... The potential problem with ADSL is not the actual download speeds, which are excellent, but the latency you can incur. This translates to a higher ping than you might expect. I think for all games, seeing as they're designed to be run over 56K, the difference would be negligible and anyone saying otherwise probably claims that they can tell the difference between 80FPS and 100FPS in Quake3A.. ;-) The point being that your ping under ISDN and ADSL are probably not going to be much different, though I may be wrong, but obviously the raw download speed will be much better, as long as you don't have too high a contention ratio on your exchange (number of users for the total available bandwidth). So there you go....

Yep, that's true. There have been some quite extensive ADSL tests done in certain parts of the country, and is now being expanded out to other areas. I was under the impression that the 7oaks exchange was not capable at present, but that way well have changed over the last few months.
The potential download speeds are awesome with ADSL, but most of my fellow gamers seem to still be choosing cable as the best option.
Both of course are subject to where it is available - hence why I'm using IDSN still :-(

Saint: Re: ADSL: It does depend on whether your exchange is actually ADSL enabled.... I'm sure most are by now, but it wouldn't surprise me if out of the way places are not done yet... Plus, the market is very new and it'll be worth while waiting for some other ISPs other than BT to offer products based on it. Unless you *really* want it right now!

Ahhh, well hello boys!!
HM ADSL just works over the top of ur existing analog line, as long as ur not toooo far away from the exchange. I am looking into it today as it happens as i need to use my ISDN for alternative call diverts. I have to have another analog line installed as u can't use an ISDN line for it.
Costs are £40 a month with no call charges, data or voice, as the line is constantly open, i beleive u simply decide how u want to split ur bandwith.
Worth looking into anyway!

Hmmm, if the rental is £27/month as well, you're getting close to the cost of ADSL, except that you might not be able to get it where you are. All in all though, doesn't sound like a bad deal at all.
Nope, I'm da man! Trouble is my joystick is *really* shagged and tends to nosedive whatever you're flying....

yeah, got the ISDN setup JC (don't laugh but I had BT do a survey done before I made an offer on the place) £14.99/month for unlimited, and that's on top of normal rental (£27/month) for the 2 phone lines+digital line, so it does all add up. The usage dictates whether its worth it or not, in my case easily. Or were u saying it was cheap??? Gotta install Freescape2 (are you saying you won't lose badly with a new joystick?) HM: As far as you being in London on the 16th is concerned, when would you be home? Obviously, we could get to you fairly early, but we wouldn't want to leave the 'puters in the cars unattended.
Tables: Not as yet... We'll get that srted in time though.

Wakey wakey u lot, still recovering from the weekend eh?
Chas, got my copy of Freescape2 today.
I'm possibly having probs with Friday 16th. Might have to be in London, and if this is confirmed, there's no way out of it :-( It won't change the plans hugely, just perhaps from what time my place is open-house. I'll let u know.
Any luck with the tables anyone?

Heh, double the framerate in most tests at 1024x768x16 than my old setup. Christ knows what the full GTS2 is gonna be like! ;-) Only problem was that I installed LINUX on another drive I added and something went wrong and it messed up the MBR on the disk, so I've gotta reinstall Windows. oooooppppssss!!! we've just been trying to send CAN messages across a fibre optic link in the middle of the sales floor.... Powered the fibre optic modules with a car battery cos we couldn't be arsed to get a power supply from engineering. Two of the wires shorted at the connection to one of the modules, shorted all of the wiring to the battery, all got very hot, wires glowing red hot all over the place, plastic casings burning nicely...
Ended up with two buggered fibre modules (expensive), scorch marks on the carpet and an office full of smoke.... To top it all, its now very cold cos we have the windows open to get rid of the smell....

Well, it actually looks like I'm missing a bit off the CRC cos there is a dominant @ bit 16 of the CRC, but maybe the CRC is only 14 bits and the CRC Delimiter is the 15th the the Dominant I am seeing is the ACK dominant returned from the RX node with the ACK del following and the 7 EOF bits subsequent. I know that the frame structure is correct cos the RX nodes are not TXing RX error frames... HHHhhhmmmmm....

Sorry, moi also having a very busy day, trying to work out why I can't see an acknowledgement bit on my CANScope.... Got a start of frame bit, 11 ID bits, an RTR bit, 2 Reserved dominant bits, 5 bits of data length code (4 bit code and a stuff bit in the middle) 1 byte of data payload, 15 bit CRC and a CRC delimiter, then a series of recessives indicating an End of Frame phase 2 segment..... but the dominant Acknowledgement Response is MISSING, between the CRC and EOF.... (think the acknowledgement delimiter is there though)..... Any Ideas? It's confusing the F**K out of me.... I just thought you should know how it feels.... I will most probably just leave at 2 or 3 on the Friday and will be driving up myself.
I would suggest that a)Some VERY GOOD directions should be posted by Mr Hangman and b) JC/Hangers tells us what we will need i.e CDs, dildos, games, tables, chairs, small boys, cables etc.
Also - was talking bollocks - it is called Drugwar not Villa. Its basically a heavyweigt smack dealers hideout on a cliffside.

I have, obviously heard of UO, but have never tried it.. Are you playing regularly online? Can I get a copy on the cheap somewhere?
As for tables, CS and I were discussing it last night. You said in an earlier post that you could provide enough for 5, was it? Can people say if they can provide a collapsible table, so we know how many to buy. We were thinking of sorting this out at the weekend to get it out of the way. We also need to discuss transport. ICIP has said he can drive, I believe, so thanks matey! We can obviously fit quite a lot of kit in ICIP's car, which will be useful. Who else would be willing to drive? I'm sure all non-drivers will make a fair contribution to petrol costs!
Pat, you'll be coming down from Ooop North, will you?
We will need to leave fairly earlyso that we can get maximum drinking time in. When will people be able to get out of work on that Friday? I know CS is taking the Friday off anyway. And we all know how much work ICIP does at the best of times right now, so he'll be okay to get out early!! ;-))
Discuss!

I can see what you did there, with the play on cash and pat, with the inferrence on both cash - as in one half of my moniker, and cash as in readies, then with the placing of the other half of the moniker- ie Pat - behind the afformentioned Cash, and the introduction of the pause determined by the comma, it gives a both interesting and amusing comment 'cash, pat'....

that it Chas, with the AMD boys to unlock them, you would have to join the copper L1 bridges, and ppl have found using a pencil does the trick.
But, Pash, u dont have to do any of this yourself if u use o/clockers. They do all that, plus guarantee the processor at the advertised speed - what more can u ask!
As for the mobo, the ABIT wins slightly over the ASUS due to its excellent bios software (oclocking without the need to fiddle with jumpers even)

I can vouch for overclockers processors m8 - they know what they are doing. The thunderbirds don't clock as well as the durons (higher starting voltage) but u can get a 850 running at 1mhz easy for about £120 (inc vat) Add to this the price of a mobo - you need one of 2 (asus or abit) to be able to play with the multiplier, and they're about £110?
To be honest, I don;t think there's much difference to notice once you get upto around a gig, so you might not want to bother with the o/clocking.
For an upgrade within a sensible budget, I would seriously recommend the AMD duron m8.

Oh oh! Price war on the HDD! Pat, you've probably got a better need for it than I..... I'm just being greedy! It's just that 36Gb is just not enough... Esp as I want to put LINUX on my PC as well... And Win2000 Server....
Pat: For overclocking, check www.anandtech.com IIRC they have a good o/c guide... From what I do remember, it's called a golden fingers device, or is that for Intels? One way of unlocking Athlon's is by drawing a pencil mark between two thingies on the CPU. Check out the sites... If you want a new mobo, the ABit KT7A is getting rave reviews everywhere... Very overclockable, stable and quick... Also supports RAID 0, 1 and 0/1 if you get the KT7A-RAID. Oh yeah, also support 266Mhz DDR Athlons, though does NOT support DDR RAM.... I think you could use your current RAM, tho 133Mhz would be better....

Cov lad checking in then....
Hangman/Chuck: was looking at the Athlon widget that means you can clock any Athlon without having to solder (is on overclockers)... Seen anything about them? Was thinking of getting one, keeping 100mhz RAM for the time being, but hopefully increasing the multiplier. Was going to get a new Mobo as well, 'cos after all the bizzare problems I've had - remember the soundcard/videocard/hanging etc etc etc I'm slightly sceptical about its ability.. Having said that - Asus are normally pretty ok. May get a new sound card and upgrade the video, another 128Mb or may be 256 and another HDD..... And, of course, a joystick..... How much for the IBM HDD Hangman?

We are going for the 17th/18th Feb and it looks like we've got 7 (?) ppl: Me, JudgeChuck, CaptS, ICIP, Mutha, CatPash and Teroony.
Just need to get DaveG/or an alterantive? to make 8.
Order of events will be to congregate at mine on the evening of friday 16th. Depending on arrival times we can ajust things, but definately a few beers, a curry, and then ppl may want to go on for 'further entertainment'
Saturday will be all day LANing, with trips for takeaways etc throughout the day.
Sunday we can play by ear (depending what time we surface) whether its more gaming/packup/veg etc.

WRT GTS's, they're just the 32Mb ELSA's, but most h/w sites rate that card highly. I like is 'cos I can add the video module later.... They've just dropped in price a bit on dabs.com to about £200 inc VAT. The 64Mb cards, the Pros and Ultras are just *too* expensive for the performance gains. I don't think any games are going to push the GeForce 2 for ages, as very few games even use the T&L engine as yet..

Blimey, ICIP's blows yours away ! ;-) We sorted him out with an Athlon 1GHz, ABit KT7A mobo, 256Mb RAM and an ELSA GeForce GTS 2.
I managed to "purloin" a PIII 550, o/c to ~612MHz, added another 128Mb RAM and have got an ELSA GeForce GTS 2 as well. Unfortunately, my mobo doesn't support AGP 2 (I thought it did), so have had to u/g mobo too... Got one cheap tho. Ah, well.... It means that I'll give my mobo to parents and throw out that crap P90 they're using! I think Dad wants to play HL / CS himself! He's definitely sold on Golf games.....

Hangman, Judge Chuck, Capt. Skellen, I Came in Peace, Animal Mutha, Pat Cash, Saint and Terooony (or whatever his moniker is.... ;-)) It does sort of depend if Saint is going to fucking bother and grace us with his presence this time. I think the lap dancing might sway it though.... ;-)
I think we have a date, then..... Oh BTW, I think Freespace 2 looks like a definite. Ted has bought a copy, A has a copy and I have 2 copies (I have a pirated one off RickG, which someone can have, as well as a new copy!) so we should be fine for setting up some multiplayer mayhem.... You don't *actually* need the disk for multiplayer, which is useful..... If you do have a spare £10, you can pick it up in HMV on budget or special offer... It's a top fun game and still looks the mutts. Plus you'll all need a joystick! No excuses, now... You can all afford a tenner or so for a crap joystick at the very least...

Hope you are all well.
I was going to read ALL of the messages to find out what was going on but got bored after the 3rd one.
What is going on? When are we playing? And when am I going to b able to kill people (legally)?
Doubt it will be happening but I will be out of the cuntry friom the 2nd to the 4th. Would love to play/drive/kill any time, wherever anyone wants to play with a wee bit of warning.

Good morning chappies!
Right, I'm fine with that date.... Just as long as I have my PC sorted out by then! Shouldn't be a problem, though...
What's this about a McD's crawl???? I'm not eating that shite... We're currying it like real men... And then going to look at women's naughty bits..... Like real men.... And then we're going to stagger home.... Like real men..... And then I'm going to bed with my teddy bear..... Like a real....

On behalf of Cpt. Skellen:
I have spoken to the good captain and the 17th/18th is fine with him.
He did say that we will have to sort a main lan session within 2 or 3 weeks after so that those not invited won't get the arse which is fair enough.
He also said that he really fancied a Mcd's crawl!! I can't think where he got that idea from!! :-)

(knew I'd regret mentioning that lap-dancing - still can use me Gold card membership for some special extras)
As for date, agreed that if we go too far ahead, it's never gonna happen. If the 3rd and 10th are out, and Cat Pash can't do the 24th Feb, what about 17th/18th Feb? (still 4 weeks away)

Lap dancing?? OMG!!!! We've gotta do that! Puuulleeeaase!!!
AM: don't even think about not being around for this weekend... I'm afraid that it's compulsory.... Otherwise, you can't be in our gang anymore.... ;-)
PC: At least you're getting a lay... Quick or otherwise... I'd give a lot for even two pumps and a squeeze right now.... The same for mingers.... ;-)
As for dates, I don't see any problem with the weekend after the 9th, if AM has a problem. We don't want to keep pushing dates too far forward though, or it'll never happen. The 16th (or whatever date it is) is 6 weeks away as it is....

I'm up for the lap dancing..... Hangman, guess you best do a reccie of the area and let us know what the talent is like... Unlike Chuck, Mingers don't appeal to me...
Mind you, just thinking that I could do with blowing the tubes out tonight, so a visit to Jumpin' Jacks in Cov might be in order - full of mingers, but guarantees a quick lay...

Thanks for the enquiry she is very well and full of the joys of spring.
As far as other games to play I reckon that we should try some UT as well as firearms CS which is getting some good reviews. And I am definitely up for the making a weekend of it idea. As to the tables we can make tables like JP's for a cost of about £40 each so I suggest that we make a couple which we store at A's or mine or somewhere and all chip in a £10. What do you think. No probs to transport stuff as I have my rather lovely gaming waggon!
It would be cool to have a weekend of just the lads for a change....be like old times! 4 McDonald's by the way sounds like a little slice of heaven!
What do people think for the weekend being this next gaming sess?
I await your abuse laden response with interest!

Heh, well there's certainly a fair amount of banter already.... Keep it up, chaps!
You can bitch away as much as you like, but you're all gonna GET JUDGED at the end of the day!
Anyways.... That young Hangman chap may be going on about the huge number of rooms he has, but he hasn't told you that he still has to go for a piss in an outhouse!
I think a full weekend trip up to see the H-man would be top, as it's past due for a start and a pure lad's weekend would be a grin anyway.... Hangman, know of any local tarty-bits for late night paid relief??? ;-)

I'd be happy for you guys to come up to Norwich. Suggest we should make a proper weekend out of it if you do decide to come...
Maybe try and journey up on the friday evening, unpack and then go for a curry/beers. Saturday, I'll offer a full english breaky before we get started on a full day of gaming (CS and others) We can break whenever through the day, I've found 4 McDonalds and 3 Burger Kings so far. And Sunday we can play by ear, whether ppl wanted to get back early, or hang around for more gaming...or go into Norwich or whatever.
Sleeping, well, if ppl brought their own sleeping bag/duvet there are 2 double beds, a spare double matress and 2 sofas, so we should be ok for 8 ppl. I've got 6 chairs plus my office chair, so only need to find 1 more. Tables are the important thing. Big table I've got should hold 3 ppl. My desk can be brought down for another 2. That table that JP brought last time was perfect, easy dismantle and solid.
So I'm sure we'd be fine (with minimal planning) It's whether you guys are willing to drive up.
Any thoughts?

Well lads, bonjour de mais oui as they say in the depths of Bavaria... I am well up for the LAN sess. I don't know what you thinkabout the Norfolk invasion idea Hangman I know it would quite an imposition but I thought it was about time that we Christened your new place. Maybe we could get Turoonee as the extra player or you mentioned mates up there? Let me know what you think and please don't feel compelled to say yes.
How is life in the grim cold miserable midlands Mr Cash?
I suppose i had better get on with the job of work that I'm paid for... hopefully speak to you guys soon. I will check on again later.

Glad everyone found it okay.....
Pat: I certainly could wear the full getup... I'd have to change my moniker to Neo or Morpheus, though... ;-)
I think we're looking for the weekend after the 3rd of March.... We were going to go for the 3rd, but we've got things on that w/e.... IIRC....
BTW, FreeSpace 2 is possibly the best space flight sim shoot-em-up there is. The benefit is that I have the disks that I copied off Richard Gledhill and it doesn't require hacking etc etc.... Dead fun....
Right that's all for now, I'll check back later....

Got some links for your hard-drive Johnny northerner: http://www.scan.co.uk/today.htm have got a Quantum 30.1Gb (7200rpm) for £85.00 (+vat) I get some of my over-clocking stuff from here: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Onl...Hard_Drives_37.html probably one of the best hard-drives about that - do you need UDMA100 with your motherboard? http://www.dabs.com/products/product-locat...fb=Type&tid=733&mid= have got a good selection Dave, good idea to look at different HL mod - I'll have a look about. Oh, and for your requirements for a different game, well any FPS game will do... Quote: quite up for a bit of flying as long as it involves shooting & maiming people!!! ...I'll shoot your pooftah southern legs off, shove the bomb where it dont shine, and see you flying when it detonates! that fit your requirements ok? Norfolk is East, so call me an Easterner. The only trait I have heard ppl say I need to worry about was if I had family up here, so I'm ok. Lucky too, coz I don't have a sister even. So we looking at either Feb 17th or 3rd March then??? Hangman

Alright boys...
Sounds like a fine idea to me, not 24th Feb if poss - my B'day on 26th and also my first race of this season is 25th. Apart from that, not too worried...
Anyone seen any good prices on Hard Disks? Mine is still buggered and haven't got round to bringing the machine up to Warwick yet, so haven't been bothered to get a new drive... Guess I best sort it now we have an iminent lan session.
I've also seen some good RAM prices.... about the same as Hangman's.... Possibly worth buying at the moment 'cos within 4 months the prices will be hiked by the loss of SDRAM production due to DDR and RAMBUS production.
Hangman - Do you get tarred with the same 'Northern Git' stereotype that I do, just because you live north of Marble Arch? ....Southern Poofs....

Hi guys! (nice idea Chas for the forum) As always I'll definately be up for coming along to another LAN session. Can't turn down an opportunity to come kick some Kentish butt:) As for when, I can fit in with everyone else, as long as we get fair warning on the dates. Saturdays suggested then (looking 4 or so weeks ahead) takes us to Feb 17th/24th or March 3rd. I don't know if you had a particular weekend in mind Chas, but I can make any of these . For the venue, I presume your thinking of either Avonwick??? This of course is fine with me, but I can offer my place for the weekend. (As long as we sorted out some tables/chairs) I can't expect you guys to want to travel 2 hours before getting started, but the offer is there. Let me know. As for what games, CS is top of my list. You've been spoilt by playing THE best game around, so I don't know if we'll find one as much fun. Still, I'm all in for finding a suitable replacement for some light relief. I'll get me thinking cap on... (what's Freespace 2?) Btw, I found that some clever people have converted all the previous version CS maps to the current 1.1, so we can play all the old maps like Docks, Mansion, Iraq - it's something like an additional 20 maps. I'll check this post later to see what ppl think. cheers Hangman (memory prices have really been going down recently, so anyone struggling along might want to have a look. 128mb from http://www.dabs.com is only about £50. worth thinking about)

Hello everyone!
I've just started this topic so that we can all join in in discussing forthcoming LAN events that we are holding.
We are planning a new LAN party hopefully within the next 4-6 weeks and I have emailed you all with this URL so that we can discuss other games we might want to play and generally get some kind of dialogue going.
If nobody posts here, (a) I'll be upset and (b) actually who gives a shit, but people might find it useful.
I'll start things off by saying that DaveC, A and I were talking about things in the pub and thought we might want to add another game / mod to what we play next time as well as Counterstrike, just to inject some variation into proceedings.
I thought that Freespace 2 would be fun, as we don't play any flight / space games and I have a copy that does not require cracking etc, so we could easily install it on everyone's PCs.
Anyway, it's now open to discussion. I'll be posting here with news on dates, who's turning up, venue etc as and when things are decided.
Over to you!
Cheers,
Judge Chuck
