Hello Peak to Peak Mountain Transit Project Supporters,

Thank you all for your support. I wanted to give you an update on where we are with our mountain transit proposal, that is, a public transportation option from Allenspark to Black Hawk via the Peak to Peak Hwy.
Collaboration and support is imperative for the success of this public transit route along the Peak to Peak Hwy. We are currently working very closely with Via and both the Gilpin and Boulder County Commissioners to submit a Colorado Dept. of Transportation rural transit grant. The good news is this grant deadline has been pushed to mid-July which will give us a chance to write an accurate proposal for the most used (and likely funded) route.
How you can HELP: Once we have the grant application in our hands, we will ask you (individuals) and local organizations/business for a letter of support to CDOT. A similar letter to the Boulder County Commissioners will also be very helpful as we would like to approach them for funding. Please start to think about these questions for your letters of support.
1.) Describe your organization/and location on the Peak to Peak.
2.) What is your relationship to Via Mobility Services (used to be Special Transit)? Who do you think this route will serve? (Remember to identify user groups such as older adults, people with disabilities, students-before and after school enrichment, recreation, health services etc.) Describe specific routes/locations the route would be used for (ex. Mountain family health, connect to Ned RTD etc).
3.) How will you as an individual/organization support Via in the Peak to Peak Transit Project? This may be in promotion and ridership referrals. Please stress the number of riders the organization anticipates as ridership, time of day, and days of the week needed. What fare do you feel is reasonable?
The letters to the Boulder County Commissioners can be written as soon as possible and sent to commissioners@bouldercounty.org.

Thank you for your support and we will let you know how our progress goes…

*Forestry Tip of the Day: May 4 is Wildfire Preparedness Day of Service Day
Forestry Tip of the Day: Governor Hickenlooper has proclaimed this Saturday, May 4th as “Wildfire Preparedness Day of Service.” Commit a couple of hours, or the entire day, and watch as your actions positively contribute to reducing your community’s wildfire risk. Grab a friend, your family, or a group of neighbors and join Coloradans throughout the state in making big changes. Do something GREAT – be a local champion!
• To learn more visit: http://www.firewise.org/information/who-is...day-of-service.aspx
• For project ideas that can be done around your home and across your neighborhood visit: http://www.firewise.org/~/media/firewise/f...rojectideaslist.pdf
Conveniently, the Nederland Sort Yard Site opens on Friday May 3, so make sure to utilize this free of charge site to dispose of cut logs and slash.

Why is this important? Join fellow Coloradoans and take action to better prepare your home and family for future wildfires. It is your personal responsibility to protect your life, family, property and home from wildfires.

*Nederland Sort Yard Opening Delayed until Friday due to late Winter Storm
Welcome to spring time in Colorado! Yet another spring snow storm is on its way! Due to the forecasted heavy snow for the mountains/foothills, the Nederland sort yard will not open as scheduled tomorrow. Instead we are now aiming to open the Nederland sort yard on Friday, May 3. Bring us your slash and logs!!! The cutting season is here!

The best way to stay informed about weather related closures is to call 303-678-6368. We will update the outgoing message as soon as a temporary closure of the site is confirmed. For further info about our sort yard program please visit: http://www.bouldercounty.org/property/fore...es/fhsortyards.aspx Enjoy the snow!

*Save the Date: Free Firewise Landscaping Forestry Workshop – May 11
Don’t forget about our upcoming Firewise Landscaping workshop scheduled for Saturday May 11, in Nederland. Defensible space does not mean moonscape: Learn how to transform your home’s perimeter into an area that you can not only use, but looks good and helps protect your home from wildfires. We hope you can join us!

When: Saturday, May 11, 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Where: Nederland Community Center, 750 Highway 72 North
What: Half-day workshop focused on “Firewise Landscaping”
Event Flyer: Firewise Landscaping Forestry Workshop Flyer (912 KB)

Workshop Highlights:
•Lessons learned from High Park and Waldo Canyon fires. Our understanding of how homes are lost in wildfires is changing. Learn the newest science available.
•Learn about simple spring maintenance tips to better prepare your home for wildfires.
•See fun and attractive examples of d-space incorporating patio design and pathways.
•Hear from a local resident about her experiences rebuilding after the Fourmile Canyon Fire.
•Learn how to use fire-resistant native and adapted plants to add color and beauty and to attract birds to your land.
•Hear from the US Forest Service about planned projects near Nederland and surrounding areas.

There is no charge for this training, and no RSVP is required. Light snacks and coffee will be provided. Sponsored by Boulder County, Colorado State Forest Service, Colorado State University Extensions, U.S. Forest Service, Town of Nederland, and Nederland Fire Protection District.

*Mountain Living Tip: The bears are out of hibernation! Be Bear Aware!
Our local bears are awake and actively looking for food. I have heard reports that bears and bear cubs are on decks and rummaging around homes in the following areas of the county: Gold Hill, Sugarloaf Rd, Lower Lefthand Canyon, Pine Brook Hills and on Magnolia Rd.

Here is a link to the Colorado Department of Wildlife’s webpage with great online resources on how to do your part to keep bears wild. http://wildlife.state.co.us/WildlifeSpecie...ingWithBearsL1.aspx

Cheers,
Ryan

It's May Day, International Day of the Worker.

I'm celebrating by joining the MAY DAY MARCH for MULTI-PARTY POLITICS.

The march is from the SE corner of Walnut and 30th, Boulder, (meet at noon) to the County Clerk's office to register with a MINORITY party. I will change my registration to the Green Party. -Harry Hempy

________________________

Here is why I'm doing this:

How's the two-party system working out for you?

Are you well-represented in Congress? How can Congress not strengthen background checks on all gun sales, when 90% of the country wants them?

Are you surprised that no one in Colorado's US Congressional delegation has proposed a constitutional amendment to allow the US government and state government to limit campaign spending, in spite of such direction from Colorado voters who passed CO Amendment 65 by a 3-to-1 margin last November? Don't hold your breath!

Do you identify (affiliate) with either the Democratic Party or Republican Party? One-third of Colorado voters don't. They are called independent voters. Independent voters act as if voting for the better of the R or D candidate is going to produce good government. Its not working. Voters need other choices. As long as D's or R's, with campaigns funded by essentially the same fantastically rich individuals and transnational corporations, have no effective electoral competition, they will dictate the discussion and representation of The People's interest will not improve.

I implore you, independent voter, get off the fence and register for the MINORITY party that best fits your political viewpoint. We need more than a D and an R on the ballot.

Meet me at 12:00 noon May 1, on the SE corner of Walnut and 30th St. in Boulder. We will march to the County Clerk's office and register with a minority political party. Registering as a member of a minority party is an affirmative action toward creation of a political system in U.S. politics in which the Democratic and Republican Parties, and the money which backs them, cannot dictate the boundaries of political debate.

Just as a clarification, Lefthand Fire does not endorse any product commercially available as a matter of course. If a homeowner wishes to purchase an open-market product, we recommend that they do some research and make the choice that fits their home, lifestyle and budget best. We recommend that people acknowledge and adhere to evacuation orders. Last year's civilian fatalities during wildfires were a result of non-compliance with evacuation orders. It is in everyone's best interest to be out of the area during fast moving fire both for your own safety, and the ability of the fire crews to move around freely and unobstructed. For folks in the Lefthand area, please feel free to contact the station and we can review your property and develop a plan with you.

Re: Fire protection.

I checked with Left Hand Fire Dept. They do not recommend fire gel. They had two points.
1. If you are close enough to a fire to need gel, you should evacuate. Human safety is more important than structure safety.
2. Eliminating fire hazards around the home is effective. Most structure fires in wildfire zones are caused by blowing embers, not advancing flames. Here is a short video they forwarded that demonstrates how structure fires start from embers with some common causes. http://player.vimeo.com/video/22751346?tit...byline=0&portrait=0. Eliminating flammable materials around a home (i.e. a straw/wire door mat) provides excellent fire protection and allows residents to evacuate when danger is eminent.

We took Boulder County's free Wildfire Mitigation training last year in Jamestown and applied what we learned around our home. Afterwards a state forester came by to walk our property and advise us on specific risks. Next we asked Left Hand Fire Dept's Deputy Chief to help. He came by and analyzed our risks and trained us in how to remove them. LHFD connected us with a grant to cover some of the cost of removing fire hazards and had a crew come by and do a lot of the heavy lifting. We are still nervous about the fire season ahead. We feel much better about the safety of our home in case of catastrophic wildfire.
sincerely,
Jeff

I know winter is now officially passed but I bet we haven't seen the last of the snow and we HAVE LOTS OF FREE FIREWOOD FOR THE TAKING!!!

COME AND TAKE ALL YOU WANT.

Our construction waste recycling company sets aside dimensional lumber that is free of nails in a bin for anyone to come through and load up pickups and trailers full to burn as firewood. Some is ready to burn and some needs to be cut to length. It is mixed together. Again, this is dimensional lumber, mostly 2x4's which burn easily.

We are located on the SW corner of 75th and Valmont. We are behind the Timmerhus log contruction company to the south of the LID Landscaping bulding (3131 N. 75th, Boulder). Follow the road on the south side of the log and timber racks back to the area just east of the fence gate. You'll see a coral marked "FIREWOOD" set up to the north of a large green wood roll-off there on your right. Come by any time and take as much firewood as you would like. It's easy access and we'd love to move it along.

We'll be refilling regularly so there will be lots to be had. Please keep coming back!

FREE FIREWOOD FOR THE TAKING!!!

PLEASE COME AND TAKE AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE.

Thanks,

[Reposting an article from Robert Hastings on the Jamestown QT]

Barricade Fire Gel http://firegel.com/ is a foam that you spray on your house before a wildfire. It stays wet for 48h and keeps burning embers from igniting the house. It easily washes off, and unlike most CAF systems, is EPA certified as nontoxic. For $346, you get a kit that will cover a typical house.

I tested it on cardboard held over a gas stove flame, and it didn't ignite in 10 minutes. Also, I applied it to the outside of my home, over a very dry Labor Day weekend, and it stayed put and wet for 48h. A bear licked some of it off, so it doesn't taste like
petrochemicals. As the attached pictures from the vendor's site { firegel.com } show, firegel comes in 1 gallon containers, and you attach a garden hose and an eductor { applicator } to it. What this means is that a small person can lift it and apply it. The link attached shows a woman applying it, so you can get a sense of scale for it.

In other CAF systems, there's a huge amount of heavy equipment that depends on different power supplies, and it's heavy and complex. The foam is relatively cheap on those systems - the applicator is expensive. Barricade took a different tack, and put expensive engineering into the foam, which is very effective and tastes good to bears. Here in the mountains of Boulder CO, Barricade Fire Gel is one part of my fire plan.

This is only one part of a fire plan, and I'd urge anyone who buys FireGel to go to a workshop with your local VFD to maximize your chance of coming out unscathed.

Another motivation to become more involved in fire protection is that in recent fires here, folks found out that they were woefully underinsured, and can't rebuild their old house. Less than 10% were adequately insured to rebuild in the mountains, and we're talking an educated affluent population.

This stuff really works.

BAND IN A HAT 7 has begun! The bands are doing their part and now we as the commUNITY for the following...

1. CALLING ALL ARTISTS of any age to submit black & white artwork for BIAH flyers, posters, and the program OR colored artwork to show at the event! This is NOT a contest, rather it's a chance for our local artists to be actively involved. We are especially interested in designs that visually describe the "Band-In-A-Hat" concept of randomly chosen musicians working collaboratively while supporting the mission of JAM (Jamestown Area Artists and Musicians): "To foster a sense of community in the Jamestown area by encouraging adult and youth participation in and enjoyment of the Arts." The event motto of "Dare To Suck" can even be included, but is not necessary. Submissions will be gratefully accepted until THIS Sunday, March 31st through the contact info provided below.

2. CALLING ALL LOCAL BUSINESSES AND ARTISTS to place an AD in the event program - $10 for a business-card size to help pay for printing costs (prices vary for larger ads). Any volunteers who could sell ads to businesses specifically related to The Arts (music, art, theater, etc.) would be greatly appreciated!
