1) Died in 1859 at 76. Writer, best known for his short stories "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and a short story that he wrote overnight, "Rip van Winkle". His grave is in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Sleepy Hollow, New York. The nickname for New York City, Gotham, an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "Goat's Town" was popularized by him in "Merrie Tales of the Mad Men of Gotham". A quote of his, "I endeavor to take things as they come with cheerfulness", he wrote, "and when I cannot get a dinner to suit my taste, I endeavor to get a taste to suit my dinner". Urban Legend has it that his last words were: "Well, I must arrange my pillows for another night. When will this end?"
2) In 1907 in Haverhill, Massachusetts, this scrap-metal dealer opens his first movie theater. He later became part owner and studio boss at MGM.
3) Born in 1929. Record company owner and founder of the "Motown" record label. His gift for identifying musical talent, along with the careful management of his artists' public image, made Motown a national success. Over the next decade he signed such artists as Mary Wells, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Gladys Knight and The Pips, The Commodores, The Velvelettes, The Marvelettes, Martha & the Vandellas, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5.
4) Born in 1931. Actress, she came to prominence in her first film role, in "Bus Stop" with Marilyn Monroe and Don Murray. She starred in the 1968-70 TV series, "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir". See her with Bus Stop co-star and real life husband, Don Murray on, "What's My Line":

7) Died in 1983 at 54. Actor, was perhaps best known for his starring role as Sergeant Sam Troy in the 1966-68 TV series "The Rat Patrol". His niece is "Wheel of Fortune" hostess Vanna White.
8) Died in 1986 at 76. Actor he was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1910, He played the title role for CBS Radio's "The Sad Sack" in 1946. He appeared frequently as various villains on the TV Series "Adventures of Superman". His name wasn't familiar to me but his face was.
