Click http://www.youtube.com/user/Milleymusic#p/u/3/OksZFI1KouU to view a lovely song with old pictures of New Waterford and Camp Carmel. The author of this video wrote this message to me: "Camp Carmel was the happiest place on earth. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did 40 years ago. But be carefull because the ghost of Pettycoat Lucy still roams the campground after midnight. lol."

Wow! So many memories, I went to Camp Carmel in the mid sixties and the again at family(youth)camp in the late seventies when my mom (Mary Ellen Milley) was the cook for one summer. The whole Camp Carmel experience in the sixties was something else, running to cabin seven, hoping to get top bunk. Cabin raids and jokes on the councilors sometimes got out of hand. Sea shell prizes, hard water, the slop hole, the old growth forest, the bell, visiting day, swimming, rowing, campfires, huhgie's farm, walk to John Joe's for pop and chips. Those of us with Camp Camel memories have something very special.

I love this property, been on it quite a few times. Fished a trout stream just down from it and it was one of the best i ever fished. From the end of the stream i made my way over to where it goes into saras pond or as they say, the cove and what a place to swim, calm as can bee. Watching the sail boats go by was something else. My dream is to get me one some day and i know the first place i will be heading and pulling into. A boaters paradise for sure

Wow what memories, being from New Victoria we had no camp but were thrilled to go to Camp Carmel , Mr Jolly was the cook one year, I remember the store where you gave your money when you arrived and they just deducted what you spent for your treat in the evening, we always stayed in cabin six , hard boiled eggs for breakfast, cornbeef hash for supper, the skits we would put on, the songs, sneaking the smokes , hiding the candles till night time, getting caught with the smokes and candles,KP the next day, playing ball against Holy Redeemer and winning, the drive back in the back of the old truck from there camp my cabin mates Elaine Brenda Sissy , Memories dreams of childhood days

Who or what was Pettycoat Lucy? Where was the gypsum mine? Was there a Camp Carmel anthem or a standard campfire song? If so, what were the words to this song?

My years spent at Camp Carmel were the best of my life. I spent nine summers there, beginning when I was seven years old, I could write a book on all my beautiful memories. From cabin inspection in the morning, treasure hunts, campfire at night, the secret outhouse on the way to the beach, Pettycoat Lucy on Thursday night, pallyasses to sleep on, the jakes (washrooms), I can still smell the water in the jakes, solio applied to your hair on arrival, attending church twice a day, gypsum mine, mess hall, wreck hall, herman (stick) KP (kitchen punishment). hard boiled eggs, sloop buckets, milk buckets, canteen, walks once during camp to the store, the little window in the top bunk of the cabins, the sheep all over camp when you awoke in the morning, trophies for kids who excelled, and bars for winning races at the end of camp, singing gee Ma I want to go back to NewWaterford on the bus to and from Camp, the previous camp would know what the best cabins were, and the fastest runner would run from the bus to get it. It is for all these reasons, that going to Camp Carmel were the best years of my life.

Friends, water, sun, beach, space, family, privacy, cousins, pets, sunsets, nature, and youth are some of timeless ingredients that are sure to make fond childhood memories. I created a picture slideshow of youth enjoying the Camp Carmel property over the last few years. My hope is that this slideshow will bring back fond childhood memories to former Camp Carmel visitors and campers. If you wish to view this slideshow without music, click http://www.capebretonland.ca/photogallery/...s_children_stop.htm . If you wish to view this slideshow with music, click http://www.capebretonland.ca/photogallery/..._children_music.htm .

I too, was part of the group that made the annual trip to Camp Carmel during Miner's Vacation throughout the sixties. Have great memories of myself and my cousins catching frogs behind the mess hall, chasing bats in the chapel, fishing at the bridge and riding Hughie's white horse. We played shuffleboard , did musical skits and played records for entertainment in the evenings.
