Oops!! Sorry I missed the message. I didn't know the answer to that one but I could have found it. Did you go down there? I took wifey over to Asheville for the day. On the way back a passing truck kicked up a rock and knocked out the back window on my wife's brand new car. She's not happy but over all it's a small thing. Never had anything like that happen before. J.E.

That's great.... Dr. Klinar, and the folks at Appalacian Orthopedics took excellent care of me and my busted ankle earlier this year, as well as a hand fracture several years ago..

When he tells you something like "Start putting weight on it" or "Use it as much as you can tolerate" DO IT!! This guy uses a very assertive approach, and you'll be much better off following his advice.

See you Saturday.

Yep, I hope to be off them by at the latest the end of the year. I'm seeing Dr. Klinar at Appalachian.

Ohhh yes....crutches supremely suck.. Hang in there, you'll get over it soon enough..

Whose the orthopedist?
Brian  66
10-26-2009 08:12 PM ET (US)
Hey Mike, I hope you are now doing better and can get some rides in this week! I always get the crud as the leaves change.

Well, my foot has I'm not sure if you'd call a break or fracture exactly, but I am going to have surgery on it later this week. They plan on putting in a couple of screws and pins to keep the bones in place, then take them out in about 6 months. I should be able to be out of a cast in about 2 months so I'm looking forward to that and getting back on the bikes.

I didn't realize you had to have surgery recently. I hope it didn't put you down for too long! I'm already getting tired of these crutches!

Read the QR...and sorry I didn't ride today with y'all, but I'm trying to rid myself of the last bit of the major dose of the crud I managed to come down with earlier in the week.

Enuf about me..What happened to you Brian? Foot surgery? That truly sucks (having had that experience recently). Hope you recover quickly and painlessly.

Right now Sat looks like a wash for doing the Watauga Wilber dams ride from ETSU. We'll re-evaluate in the AM after looking at radar and after evening tornadoes have passed through.
This is Sat's 57 mile ride Kathy,
http://bergg.etsu.edu/tcrc/CueSheets/pdf/WataugaDam_57.pdf
There is also a map if you browse around the TCRC site
It is not a breakfast ride. Usually lunch in Elizabethton.

I'm thinking of extending Sundays ride from Mormon Church on Netherland Inn Rd. to Church Hill, down Goshen Valley and Over Bays Mtn. for a 35 miler if any one else wants to tag along..

I ride that route a lot. there is not a lot of shoulder, but the
traffic is fairly light and for the most part considerate. For a 50 to 60 miler, I'd ride into Shady then turn right at the crossroads. That will bring you thru Stoney Creek to Elizabethton, then right on 19 to 11E back to Bristol.

I'm going to be visiting Bristol this weekend and wanted to get in a 50 to 60 mile ride with some long sustained climbs. I see some routes on mapmyride from Bristol to Shady Valley over Holston Mountain http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-state.../144124224924835141 . What concerns me is traffic on 421. Is this a good route? Are there better choices? I'd prefer to ride from Bristol. I don't like driving to a ride.

NOAA says 80% chance of rain after 8am today. By the looks of local and regional radar I'd put that at about 110%. We plan on extending tomorrows ride to Church Hill over Bays Mtn for about 34 miles if anyone wants to join us.

Wimps. :) Of course I guess I can't say much, I didn't ride last

damaged equipment that was hit Saturday night, quite rare for this

Tony,
Our club and the TCRC both have extensive upper east tennessee ride maps/ cue sheets posted on our sites you are welsome to check out, or check out our ride schedules and join us. Please note the Tri-Cities where we are located is 100 miles from Knoxville. Check out our Orgs listing for clubs and routes nearer to Knoxville such as the Smokey Mtn. Wheelmen. Our Events page posts some local event of interest, but is hardly all inclusive as there are just too many.

Yeah, it's me. I was just passing along a request from one of the email list I'm on.
On another topic, the members of KBA who had previously been members of RUSA were
Jeff Rowland and Julianne Surchat. Their memberships in RUSA expired in 2002, but I can't confirm that they ever rode a brevet. The RUSA has us as "Kingsport Bicycle Club". I should probably get that straightened out.
*Rowland*, Jeff | RUSA No. 1598 | Johnson City, TN

Bill,
Obviously by your stated height you are NOT the Bill Phillips that is in our club. Besides, he's married already and probably couldn't handle two.
As mentioned in below posts, they only rent mountain bikes and comfort bikes in the tri-cities. I had trouble getting a real road machine in Chicago. Being a tourist meca, you might find rentals in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge.

From a list I'm on, thought some of you might know something I don't:

Hey all,

Sorry if this is too off topic but I thought someone on this list
might be able to help me out.

My fiancé and I will be honeymooning in Gatlinburg TN in early
September and we'd love to get some bike riding in. We'd hoped to get
a couple folding or suitcaseable bikes to ride around the area, but
the budget REALLY isn't there.

Anyway, we'd really like to be able to bike more than drive once we're
in the area.

Does anyone on the list:

* Know of a place in the area we could rent some OK bikes at a decent price?
OR
* Live in the area and have a couple bikes they could rent us while we're there
OR
* Know of a good place in the area we might be able to buy a couple
bikes cheaply and then sell them back at the end of the week?

We ride uprights or recumbents and are OK with tandems (although we've
only ever ridden recumbent tandems). I'm 5'9" and she's 5'4".

We'll be getting there sometime on September 8th and coming home the
following weekend. Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

- phædrus

Chris, as far as I know the only places around here rent mtn/ comfort bikes. I know the feeling. I went to Chicago and wanted to rent a real road bike and even there it was hard, and I paid twice as much for one.

Friends,

I am looking to rent a road bicycle for 3 days (Aug 5-7). I am a native of Kingport and avid cyclist. I am visiting family and would love the opportunity to ride. None of the local shops rent. I live in Bethel, CT. I am packing my shoes and biking clothes with high hopes.

Kris,
Welcome and browse around the website where you will find lots of usefull info. You may be riding faster than you think, but the easiest way to tell is get a basic computer/speedometer that has average speed. There is not a beginner groups, as such. As for road riding, ride with traffic and follow the same rules, wear bright visible colors, use a rear view mirror.
Shoot an email to the main site email address for more specific questions, not here.

Hi Everyone,

I'm relatively new to the cycling world and don't feel that I'm quite ready to join an official group ride - I'd probably be too slow right now. Are there any beginner groups that help show new folks the ropes?

I have a Trek Navigator 2.0 and have taken it on the road for 3-4 trips now, mostly on the Green Belt and in the downtown Kingsport area. I'd love to get more comfortable on the road though and would welcome any tips!

Thanks!

I am registered for the 14th Annual Bicycle Tour of Colorado for June 22nd - 28th with a meal plan and camping service but due a sudden serious health issue with my mother I cannot go. This is a 403 mile loop beginning and ending in Durango through and over some wonderful CO mountains and country (http://www.bicycletourcolorado.com ).
My buddy is driving from Abingdon so you could probably arrange a ride with him. I would like to get half price out of package which breaks down as follows and I will consider breaking up the package if you don’t want it all:

Tour with gear shuttle, sag support, etc. 360.00
Camping service with ShuttleGuy 295.00
Meal Plan 227.00
Total 882.00

Saturdays ride to Yuma
To the usual suspects:

Went by McGees today and the restaraunt was only serving from 11-? and was closed due to septic problems.

Guess we might eat about 1 mile out at the Greenbelt Eatery and carry snacks for later or stop by Hicks at about mile 40 for the long riders.
