We have started up a Mt. Washington Road Race Forum (Bulletin board).
This forum has been created for the convenience of those people selected in the 2008 lottery. Race management is not responsible for its contents and does not monitor or respond to questions that may be submitted there. Due to the changes at the top of the mountain you may want to use this tool to arrange your ride down the mountain. Remember, you must make your own arrangements for the ride down the mountain and it must be arranged prior to race day.

Well, I just signed up for the lottery again. I ran the race last year for the first time. Half-way up the mountain I said I hoped I didn't win the lottery next year, but once I reached the top, I knew I had to run it again. Can't wait for the lottery results! This is the ultimate race! Hope to see you all there again. Mike

I plan on doing some of my training on a treadmil. Does anyone know what incline I should use as a training tool for the race? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Doug, Set your treadmill on the highest setting! That will give you an idea of the race. For my training last year, I ran every hill I could find, including mountain trails. The difference though is that on any uphill, there is always a downhill to help you catch your breath. On the Mt. Washington race, there is no downhill or even level spot where you can catch up. If I'm chosen for the lottery this year, I'm going to do more long-distance runs of 15 or so miles to build up my endurance. Hope this helps and good luck, Mike

Hi Mike, Thanks for your advice. I just realised I'm already signed up for the Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, MN on that day, so I won't be entering the lottery this year after all. But there is always next year, so the advice will be put to good use. Thanks again. Doug

To everyone signed up for the first time and feeling nervous about this race. This is the "best" event in New England, bar none. You will love this race! Set your treadmill on 12% or hit some of the hill climb series events like Mt Wachusett for training. Mt. Wachusett is a good "primer" on 5/24. It is not as long a race or sustained steep grade, but a good tune-up.

I think that there should be a category for mass x gravity x height = potential energy (foot -lbs) Get that and divide by time !! Foot-pounds/sec !! Have an intial weigh in and then multiply by the elevation difference.( Difference in elevation betwen the start of race and elevation of finish.)
Weight of person x elevation difference between start and finish line and divide it by time to run the race.
can divide that number by 550 and get horsepower !!! Hreat idea or not !!

Have you run Pike Peak? This one is a lung buster too! Matt Carpenter makes the Peak look like an easy jog up! I ran Mt Washinton about 3 rimes. Hoping for a lottory spot. Two years ago didn't get in. Here's hoping ! Good luck.

List should be posted today! I ran the race in 05 & 06 (slowly!) and live in flat South Jersey, so the posts about 12 degrees on your treadmill are right on! I had mine on various inclines, but mostly 12 & up to 15

comfortsignups.com is the correct venue for Mt Washington. If you have an entry on your credit card statement you are in. I made it. Good luck, train for a half marathon and do lots of hills, you will need it.

Scot, ""Your vehicle may go up the road if you have at least two runner's AUTO PASSES (a tear-off tab on the race bib number) - you will pay the Tollhouse fees of $20.00 for driver/vehicle and $7.00 per additional passenger. Vehicle restrictions will apply. If your vehicle driver does not have at least TWO runner's AUTO PASSES he/she will not be allowed to drive to the summit - REMEMBER to give your driver your pass...If you have THREE auto passes then you do not have to pay the toll. Your vehicle must also have space for the 3 runners without exceeding weight limits.""
I got this from the General info section..

I will be staying at a local hotel the night before and will meet you at a location of your choice to give you my pack of warm clothes. I need a ride down. Having never run this before, I bracketed times of runners who ran faster and slower than me on Whiteface last year. Somewhere between 1:25 and 1:44. my guess on my time is around 1:30. I hope to be on this mountain 3 other times this season: a traverse of the Presidential Range, the bicycle hillclimb in August and the prior practice ride. All 4 events means about 3000 driving miles from and back to NYC where I live for perhaps 40 total miles of running, hiking and cycling. That's not counting all the other hillclimbs this season in other states...
Let me know if you have room for me on a ride down: hschiffman1@nyc.rr.com

/m58 In response to Chris (post#58)-- I used to live in Amherst, MA and found Mt. Sugarloaf (in Sunderland, MA) to be a pretty good way to train for this-- its a short paved road (~1mi), but plenty steep! (a few up-downs was tough on the legs and helped me get in shape for my first try at Mt. Washington in 2004) Living in Delaware now and wishing I had a good, steep hill like this one to train on!

This is my first go at the Mt. Washington Road Race, and I am scared, very scared. I have a mini-van available and I'm looking to pick up more runners. Please e-mail me if you need a ride down the 'big hill'. I live and will be leaving for the race, early that morning, from the Southern Maine area. Contact me at 'woolyacresfarm@earthlink.net' Thanks and good luck to all.

/m72 you won't be alone. It is my first try as well and I'm just getting started on prep. I ran a very slow 2.5 miles on the treadmill at 25% incline the other day. I was fairly comfortable, but I can sense that this is going to be a race where muscle cramping/strain/snap is a very real possibility so I will be doing lots of stretching as part of my training.

/m73 I'm beginning to think that treadmill training may be my best option for preparing for the race. I'm curious, will you continue to add mileage for your treadmill runs? Also, do you do this workout weekly or bi-weekly?

/m74 That was my first treadmill workout at a sustained 12% grade. I run almost all of my miles outside, regardless of weather. I am semi-tapering this week to get ready for a 15K this Sunday. After that I will be dedicating probably 2 days a week to incline treadmill work and try to get longer runs outside for endurance. My goal would be to try and add half a mile to the treadmill workouts each week for the next 8 weeks. That would put me at around 6.5 or 7 miles TM runs at 12% right before the race. I'm hoping that will get me up the mountain. I think it is the best way to train for this race since there is no downhill, so running rollers outside will not give you the relentless uphill that this race calls for.

To those needing a ride down:
I will have one, or two cars going to the summit on race day. Staying near the mountain Friday night, and hope to finish (under 2:00) - if those details help. 8^)
Based on the types of vehicles, I should have need for between 1 and 3 racers - and may be able to accommodate 1 more.
I'm not looking to make this difficult; my details are not yet firm, I want to care for those with particular needs (e.g. international runners, outside-NE runners, couples) - so I'm going to ask you to come to me first.
*If your details are firm* and you can wait abit before knowing - please send them to: breathing.in@gmail.com
I'm hoping to wrap up my planning in 2 weeks time... let's say by Patriots' Day... 4/21.
I'll try to acknowledge your initial email, and though it may be a generic followup - promise to tell you if we can't help each other, and will post a notice here.
Thanks y'all ...being on the start line with each of you will be an honor - training willing....hoping to finish with you too. Wishing you lots of happy hillclimbs in our ever-dwindling 77 days. Yikes.

First time runner and I'm in need of a ride down. (I can't imagine having to trek down after the race...)
Using the estimated time calculater, I'm anticipating a finish time between 1:30 - 1:40.
I'll be coming from the Central Maine area (Oakland). Unsure at this time if I'll be staying overnight on Friday or driving out early on race day.
I can be reached via e-mail violette04963@yahoo.com
Thanks in advance!

I have a Suburban and can seat six comfortably, meaning that I can take 4 runners down the mountain. Please e-mail me at kteosherman@comcast.net if interested in a ride. If you do not get a return e-mail from me within one day of your e-mail, that means the spots are taken. I anticipate finishing the race around 1:40. I can't wait, this will be my first MWRR.

Does anyone have experience either running down the auto road or hiking down one of the trails?
After my one previous MWRR, I saw a fair number of people running down the auto road after finishing. I'd like to give that a shot, but given the heavy traffic, both up and down, it seems like it might not be the safest thing in the world. Is it possible to avoid most of the traffic by heading down soon enough?
Hiking down also appeals to me, but that's not something that I care to try on my own without some company.
If anybody has any thoughts or relevant experience, I'd be grateful to hear.

/m85 Not sure the Cog would be the greatest choice for a way down -- not only is it pretty pricey for tix, but I think the railway takes you to the complete opposite side of the mountain (someone please correct me if I'm wrong!); so logistically I think you'd need to leave a car at the railway lot and get a lift to the race start (which i don't think is a quick trip!). Seems like it might be easier to try and find lift down than arrange that... (man, it might even be easier just to hoof it back down the auto road than arrange that!)

I have a room with two beds reserved at the Eagle Mountain house if anyone is still without a reservation and doesn't mind bunking with a newbie stranger from Western NY.
How are the preparations for all of you going? I've been working more hills into my runs and I have also done several extended sessions on the treadmill at 12%. At this point I am just acclimating myself to the grade without any attempt at speed. I'm setting it at 3.4 MPH right, now but was able to get 3 miles at my last crack without exceeding my zone 3 HR, so I will take that as a success. I'll add another half mile next week. Right now I should be able to make it almost half way up the mountain :)

What are your ideas on a training plan? I've been doing a 3 week cycle of 1 = 40 minute 14% grind on treadmill, 2 = Find a 200M hill and run up and down it for 40 minutes and 3 = Find some other hill to run up-up-up. I'm a veteran of the mt goat series last year - so I realize that speed work, hill charges and other standard fair are fairly useless for the long grind. What are you guys/gals doing for specificity? Chris, I'm running normal outdoor miles 4 days, about 25 - 30 per week with some light hills, plus twice a week grinders at 13% on the TM. I did 68 mins Monday and 75 mins yesterday. I agree that speedwork seems somewhat pointless when I'll be lucky to hold a 14 or 15 minute pace. Currently training at 3.6MPH on the TM, and not expecting to increase my TM speed before the race. Running high 8 to low 9 pace outside. Looking forward to meeting some of you at the race.

I agree that long treadmill hill slogs are a necessary evil for this race. But I wouldn't recommend much other hill running outside of that. I think the key is ability to be at high heart rates for a long time. Long tempo workouts are very important, and intervals are still recommended for building aerobic fitness, if not for increasing speed. I don't think it's that important that the hard workouts necessarily have to be running either. Heck, you're barely running during the race. I see it as an extreme aerobic fitness test.

I wouldn't call my usual terrain very hilly. I think there is maybe 700 feet of vertical gain over a 14+ mile loop. My road running now is strictly for endurance. I'm less worried about my heart and lungs than my legs.

Yes I am also looking for a ride down the mountain. If anyone is offering a ride up the mountain I'll take one of those too (just kidding). I will be runing up Wacussett Mt next week and also doing the Northfield trail run June 7, if anyone wants to meet up at any of those races. Lou@amorati.com

Looking to give 2 rides down. I'm expecting to run a fairly quick time.
