Cel: thank you for your concern and advice. Warm shower does help. I hope I'll get past this soon. Sometimes I wonder if other folks out there my age are experiencing the same problem. I'm very interested to know how they cope with it. I will ask around.

Well I don't mean to rub it in, but we celebrate birthdays here and there and before you know it, it all add up. And talking of birthdays, July is sprinting fast and some of us will be a year older again. Hey, look at the bright side, we get to enjoy those discounts, hehehe.
Seriously, I am having difficulty stretching both arms above my head lately, if I don't take a take a hot shower, hidi ko na maikikilos ang kamay ko. I am like an old diesel truck that takes a while to warm up, and I need to otherwise, I will not be able to play w/ Melody & Elea. On the bright side, since we are now having the summer weather, 8:30 palang ng umaga, naghahabolan na kami ni Melody sa park, so it's giving me and Melody a good exercise. And another consolation for me was that, I had my check up recently and I got good grades from my doctor. I guess, a Melody & Elea a day keeps the doctor...
But Roger, I hear you, let us pray for each other's health and well being, that's what friends are for. We need to go back to our monthly get-together. it's easier to compare prescriptions that way, hehehe.

Eling: I love the story. I don't know why but it dawned on me to visit our Mb and discovered this inspiring story. It's just what I needed to wake up to this morning. I haven't been feeling so well this past few days or weeks even. My energy level is way down, and parts of me ache so bad. If this is what getting old is all about, I find no joy in it. One of my customers picked up his machine last night and I asked him to pray for me, something that I have not the opportunity to ask anyone lately and he did. I thank God for reminding me that I have friends out there that care and all I have to do is to reach out. I believe that God has given us all friends for that very reason. After all, his word tells us that there is a friend who stand by you more than a brother. I thank God for those caring friends when everyone around me isn't really around. Thanks again for the story. R&R: Thanks for sharing this story...hope you don't mind me posting it.
One day I had lunch with some friends. Jim, a short, balding sailor type about 80 years old, came along with them---all in all, a pleasant bunch.
When the menus were presented, we ordered salads, sandwiches, and soups, except for Jim who said, "Ice Cream, please. Two scoops, chocolate.
I wasn't sure my ears heard right, and the others were aghast. "Along with heated apple pie," Jim added, completely unabashed.
We tried to act quite nonchalant, as if people did this all the time... But when our orders were brought out, I didn't enjoy mine.
I couldn't take my eyes off Jim as his pie a-la-mode went down. The other guys couldn't believe it. They ate their lunches silently and grinned.
The next time I went out to eat, I called and invited Jim. I lunched on white meat tuna. He ordered a parfait.
I smiled. He asked if he amused me I answered, "Yes, you do, but also you confuse me.
How come you order rich desserts, while I feel I must be sensible? He laughed and said "I'm tasting all that is possible.
I try to eat the food I need, and do the things I should. But life's so short, my friend, I hate missing out on something good.
This year I realized how old I was. (He grinned) I haven't been this old before."
"So, before I die, I've got to try those things that for years I had ignored. I haven't smelled all the flowers yet. There are too many trout streams I haven't fished. There's more fudge sundaes to wolf down and kites to be flown overhead.
There are too many golf courses I haven't played. I've not laughed at all the jokes. I've missed a lot of sporting events and potato chips and cokes.
I want to wade again in water and feel ocean spray on my face. I want to sit in a country church once more and thank God for His grace.

I haven't cried at all the movies yet, or walked in the morning rain. I need to feel wind on my face. I want to be in love again.
So, if I choose to have dessert, instead of having dinner, then should I die before night fall, I'd say I died a winner, because I missed out on nothing. I filled my heart's desire. I had that final chocolate mousse before my life expired."
With that, I called the waitress over... "I've changed my mind,” I said. "I want what he is having, only add some more whipped cream!"

I was watching 'Strict ang Peyrents Ko' on Viva Movie Channel.
It must have been made during the dark days of Philippine movie making because there obviously was no quality control done on it before it was put out for general release.
I say that because one of the male actors was seen scratching his balls or groin. I observed this annoying behavior several times during the course of the movie.

Another favorite talk show/deejay of mine is someone named Laila Chikadora (I suspect that's not her real last name) of Interaksyon 5. She comes on at 11:30 AMish (2:30 AM, Philippine time). She's a hoot. Makes my hike a lot of fun and easier 'cause she makes me a laugh with her good cheer and funny antics. As you know, I don't normally use earphone when I'm hiking, so I have her channel 92.3 FM on superloud (to get there on Tunein, press category called By Location, then Asia, and finally Philippines). When I like something or want to comment, I stop and tweet her on @LailaChikadora. I have been greeted by her several times on the air ('Oh, si Mr. Bill Balderama, have a nice hike...paki instagram naman ang view diyan'). First time she mentioned me, she was asking who in the world would hike in the wee hours of the morning, until she realized that her fan is on the other side of the world in sunny Oceanide.
Isn't technology great?

80 php for buko? Naisahan ka, dahil kay mang Pablo and suki namin, eh, 28 pesos lang and isa. Kong gusto mo pa, bubuksan niya para mainom mo yong gates, then he will kudkud it for you and put it in a small plastic bag for take home. Or you can buy the coconut as is. The going rate for buko of any size doon sa bangketa and side stores outside of SM Fairview is 25 to 30 pesos lang.
How do you like my Taglish? I am doing this in honor of Kris Aquino. She's the queen of Taglish in the Philipiines. Ikaw na!

Conversation overheard at a Walmart involving two elderly black ladies discussing their younger family members:
1st Black Woman: "You talk to them about whats happening with the cost of groceries rising, everyone's out of work and on welfare, and they just look dumbfounded.
Don't they know whats happening and how Obama's playing them like fools??!"
2nd Black Women: I know, my son don't even know, and don't seem to care. He just sits there on the couch, lard butt that he is, watch his sports, and drinking his beer, wanting me to get him a sandwich. I told him, I ain't never, ever seen this country so screwed up. I told her about my father's experience liberating them idiots during World War II, and she had no clue about the thousands of Americans that died, killing all those so-called socialists.
2nd Woman: Really? What about that liar telling us he was going to defend marriage, and then turning his back on us, and promoting homosexuallity? And just the other day he turned that first terrorists loose that bombed Boston. Doesn't he know that son of Bin Ladin financed and planned that bombing?
And Obama met with his parents in the White House, and all of a sudden, he's turned loose? How in the hell did he win that second term? Are all of our youngsters on drugs? I am exchanging twitter messages with a sportscaster from Interaksyon 5 in Manila. I tell him that Jason Collins probably came out not because he wants to, but because he needed to do something spectacular before his contract re-negotiation is up, w/c is pretty soon. Remember now: Collins averages 2 points per game. Not exactly Star material, by basketball standard. And, look, he has a girlfriend of 8 years. To now come out? C'mon! What is the point? No, too coincidental. The sportscaster promises to explore that angle. At any rate, I told him that should a PBA player come out, it would not be shocking anymore,. In fact, nothing shocks the Filipino sensibilities any longer. Being bakla does not carry the same stigma it once had decades back, anyway. It has come to the point where everyone just go, ho-hum, whenever someone you least expect comes out and declare himself to be a man-eater.

Ever wonder how I remember little things about the past? Since the early days of the Marine Corps, I have always kept a journal of what I call Main Events. From time to time, I review these and memories come into sharp focus. You would be surprised what a great learning/re-learning/recalling aids these journals are. They are quite valuable. I told my wife that when I die and before my body is donated to Science Fiction, that she ought to make these journals available to whom it may concern. Who knows, someone in the distant future might learn something, like why I can never learn how to dance the Argentinian Tango or Lambada; what makes Filipinos call Jessica Sanchez 'Filipino-Mexican' when she was born in America; why the science of growing money from trees is a false one; and other nifty stuff. I notice that my journals do not contain a single entry on my thoughts about white-on-brown discrimination. It does not exist for me. I don't know. Maybe I have learned to play the white man's game that very one of them I dealt with see me as equal. Heck, come to think of it, some of the white AND black folks I work with in the military and after think I am a different kind of leader that must be listened to. Is it the way I treat or lead them -- or is it my raw good looks? LOL!

Romeo, pare...that is the most often heard comment I get from liberals. I should tell you a story about the time when I was stationed in Marine Barracks, Treasure Island. I think it was about the time when there was a talk on the national level of unionizing the military. Mid- to late 70s, as I recall. Naturally, people who are in know the effects of unionizing us, right? It would be quite devastating not only to the morale, but to the readiness of the entire Armed Services. Anyway, my wife and I were looking around San Francisco for a house to invest in from my reenlistment bonus. We came upon this house for sale not far from where her Uncle and Auntie live. We went inside and inquire about the house. The owners were a typical San Francisco hippie couple -- long hair, peasant dress, braided hairs, Grateful Dead get-up - the works, pare. The man entertained us while the woman of the house remained seated reading a print-out. The title of the print-out was 'Is The Marine Corps Obsolete?' I was very familiar with this study because our Company CO Captain Lamouriuex (he got out to become Deputy Commander for the San Francisco PD across the Bay) made all the Staff NCOs READ and discuss its contents. It was part of our leadership discussion. When the lady looked up at me, she saw I was sporting short hair. "In the service?," she asked. I said yes and I am in the Marine Corps. And I mentioned that I am quite familiar with what she is holding in her hand. Then she asked me what I think of the Armed Forces being unionized. I said, 'That'll be the day," meaning I don't agree at all. She quizzed me some more, and we had a good repartee about it. Then after a few minutes of lively discussion, she threw the ineveitable question libs asked to show their superiority - she asked what my rank was. I said Staff Sergeant. She then slumped back with a weak, "Oh...", a look of disappointment covering her face. A typical lib, I thought. My opinion does not count because I am ONLY an enlisted man. No matter how brilliant my rebuttal and reasoning were that the Marine Corps is NOT obsolete and that a military union would be a bad idea, I did not think I was able to convince her about the error of her ways because she was only talking to a Marine sergeant. I remember my wife's reaction: she said, 'you had better put in for OCS like you wanted or you will never win an argument against these people.'
Liberals are everything we accuse them of: possessing of misplaced morality, superiority complex, idiocy belying their claimed education, and other maladies. Pare, I deal with these people everyday. I know them, as Rush says, 'like the back of my nicotine-stained finger.' It would be interesting to find and isolate like-minded politicians in the Philippines. I have my work cut out for me there. But they are easy to spot - any politician who admires Obama is automatically a member of the Idiot Club.

At the conclusion of the article, I said to myself that that's what's wrong with the state of education in the Philippines today. People are just too proud to NOT have their temporary titles included in print or mentioned in informal conversations. Case in point: a prospective buyer came to my house in Quezon City, and she was interested in buying 'something like this,' pointing to the house. She introduced herself as 'doctor' then her first and last name. Anyway, I must have pissed her off because all throughout my 'presentation' (BTW, I am NOT - repeat NOT - going to sell that house anymore) I called her by her first name without the 'Doctora.' The look of irritation on her face was palpable. It was only after she left that our katiwala said to me: 'hindi po ata niya nagustuhan yong tawag ninyo sa kanya.' He was right. By the way, among friends and those who are within my immediate circle,' I insist on being called 'Bill' or, if I am older or you work with me, a simple 'PO' is preferred. Not SIR. No SIR. PO is the proper honorifics used for people who are much older or more -- AHEM -- good-looking. Joke lang. (That's another annoying Filipino 'habit' I neither understand nor participate in - issue a post-disclaimer that something I said is a joke...if you don't understand my joke, it's your friggin' problem). Anyway, the linked article is interesting because it shows where we Filipinos got this bad 'habit' from. For me, if you are a doctor or a nurse, or something, I will call you by your title if you are practicing your profession in pursuant of a business, commercial, or healthcare transaction with me. Otherwise, in a casual conversation, do not expect me to call you by the title you earned as shown by that parchment paper hanging on your wall. Ay nako Pare, even if you try to tell a liberal that a rattlesnake wagging its tail will strike and bite you, he would probably just say "oh yeah, let's see". I remember an incident where my former son-in-law was trying to embarass me in front of his friends, telling them that people who joined the military do it because they can't do anything else or they're not smart enough to do anything else. He went on and on about the military being this and that, so I said to him, "compare to what"? I told him how he's always bragging about how much money he makes and yet I'm the one who buys things for his son but what really shut him up was when I told him that I probably make more than him and I don't even work. Liberals have no peripheral visions in my opinion. They can only see what's in front of them and no matter how hard you try to explain to these people that the world is round and water is wet, they will always come up with this answer, "yeah, but"...

I agree, pare. If you will recall, Bernard Lewinsky simply shrugged his shoulder when told that her daughter 'did the dirty,' to paraphrase a certain 'Reverend' Wright of Trinity church in Chicago, with BJ Clinton. Unbelievable what liberals accept in the name of politics. You and I see eye-to-eye on this and very clearly so, but for many of our fellow expats, this is not the case. They do not choose the right path. It is like the first words of that rap part in the song I linked below: 'Alam natin ang tama, pero bakit natin hindi ginagawa...' I have something to say about why Philippines seem to be having difficulty with progress: despite heavy involvement with everything politics, the Filipino is still politically immature. This explains why Filipinos in America have this head-scratching love for things Democrats: they carry with them the political immaturity of their counterpart back home. There is a perfect example in my niece, a daughter of my cousin who also attended CGEAHS. (Her dad's sister, the former Lysbeth Bongolan, is a CGEAHS alumnus). Anyway, my niece is a brilliant girl, graduating from Columbia University with a BA and a double Master. What I could not understand was she was active in the two presidential campaigns of transcript-hiding Obama. I asked: 'WHY?' Her answer? 'Uncle, because he went to my school!' Unbelievably stupid coming from a brilliant child. I tried to explain to her what her family and others she knew have been through under the first administration of her candidate, that giving him a second one is the height of stupidity. Wala run. Useless. I just hope that those who supported Obama will soon realize that they helped bring about the DEMISE OF LIBERTY in America. (But do they even understand what that means?)

A man got a call from his wife and was told that his young daughter was raped. Sounding really mad, he asked his wife who the rapist was, she said it was Bill Clinton. He asked his wife if it was the real Bill Clinton and not just some wannabe. She said it's the president. He told his wife to hang up and that he will call her back in a few minutes. Several minutes later he made a call to his wife and told her not to worry about a thing. He checked the stock market and it's doing great, unemployment is'nt doing so bad and the American people just loved this man so go ahead and tell your daughter she should be honored that it was Clinton who raped instead of some Republican. I think this scenario is something that a sick liberal would do, don't you agree?

Are you afraid of snakes?
I just came from a hike, and I thought you should know - not me...not anymore. I used to be deathly afraid of them. These days. I just stay out of their way, wait for them to slither back through the bushes, or do something to get 'em off my path.
Today, I ran across two. They were straddled across the trail and enjoying the break in the weather. It was about 77 degrees Fahrenheit around Lake Calavera. Usually, these creatures come out of the bushes and into the sunlight at between 75 and 85 degrees. Now, I am talking about the non-poisonous kind. The rattlers come out when it's hotter than 85 degrees or so. You can't miss the rattlers because they give you warning sign that you are getting close to one: a clear rattling sound. The idea is to back out and give them as much space as possible. Anyway, the two snakes I saw today are non-poisonous. Black and brown, I think, in color. And I have become very, very observant about what is ahead of me. Anyway, both wouldn't move, so I pound on the ground with my hiking pole near where the two snakes were. They slither quickly into the bushes, and I went on to complete my hike.
The point of the story is I used to be deathly afraid of these creatures. I think the frequency of sightings during summer and right about now helped me overcome my fear of them. No, I will never bend over and pick one for closer inspection, but I would not be like before where I would simply turn around and go back the same way I came because I was too afraid to drive them away with a stick or a rock thrown from afar.

Ha-ha! Very true. Although I love these people, I always kid around them about being tightwads.
My son-in-law James is not practicing, but he came from a prominent Jewish family that settled in the New York area. His great-great uncle was the well-known composer Nathaniel Shilkret. His father Wayne, who died fm heart complications in 2006, was instrumental in bringing classical performers to the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. Even the walls in his house in Cerritos when I visited there after his death had photos of him and other classical greats like Barashnykov, Kanawa, others. I have two grandsons, 6 and 8, who are following in their grandpa's (not me) footsteps - they are regular performers in Hollywood commercials and have bit parts in movies. Bill: Have you heard the other version of how Moses got the ten commandments from God? Well, we all know that God's CP is up on Mt. Sinai, and he's up there pretty much on his own. One day he decided to come down and pass some of his commandments to the inhabitants living below the mountain. The first group of people that he encountered were the Egyptians. He hollered at Ramses and asked him if he wants some of his commandments. Ramses scoffed at him and told God to take his commandments somewhere else because they don't believe in any of it. Disappointed, God continued on because almost everyone that he encountered turned him down. Tired and frustrated, he decided to head back to Mt Sinai and try it again some other time. On the way up, he noticed a guy with a white beard warming his feet in front of a burning bush, so God hollered at him and asked for his name. He said his name is Moses, and God asked him if he would like some commandments? Moses started scratching his head and asked God how much is it going to cost? God said to Moses, nothing it's free. Moses smiled at God and said, "heck in that case I'll take ten". Just go to a typical Filipino house, and you will find those huge, oversized utensils - wooden fork and spoon - that hang on their kitchen walls. A Catholic priest, a Baptist minister and a Jewish rabbi were discussing the subject of how their church and themselves divide the money that have been collected. The Catholic priest started by saying that he would just draw a line on the floor, toss all the money in the air and anything that fell on the other side of the line goes to God and the ones that fell on his side the line is his. Well, the Baptist minister says he would just draw a circle, toss all the money in the air and anything that fell inside the circle is Gods and anything outside the circle is his. The Jewish rabbi started laughing and made fun of his buddies. He says the way I do is a lot easier than yours, I don't draw a line or a circle, I just toss all the money in the air, what stays up is God's and the ones that fell on the floor is mine.

Seriously, and deep in my heart, I see hope in the rise of the Filipino. In fact, I am very optimistic in my view. And here is the strangest thing about it. The change is not only going to come from decent people like BOC Commissioner Ruffy Biazon, but also with the willing participation of Philippine media/news agencies. That's right. It might come as a surprise to most of us expatriates who have been exposed to the sorry-assed antics of liberal MSM. The major networks in PI (GMA Pinoy TV, TFC, etc.) are all into improving/promoting Philippines, but the one station I prefer is the Kapuso Network (GMA Pinoy TV). Their news hour '24 Oras' is truly an information-packed excursion into common-sense disguised as news. I will post their political campaign advocacy theme song next post, and tell me what you think. Bill, do you really think, I mean deep in your heart that the nature of politics in our homeland will ever change? This type of political activities in my humble opinion is what keeping our country from true greatness. It is hard to imagine that with all the bright minds that our country are able to produce we are still sitting at the bottom of a dry well. It's really sad that the one entity that is responsible for keeping our country straight had become the breeding ground for such activities. Corruption in our country is a way of life. It exist in all level, from the rich and the powerful and sometimes even the poorest of the poor. The rich and powerful uses corruption to conduct business, the poor have to resort to it just to be able to survive. Ha-ha! 'Toys We Be!' How appropriate. Romy, I saw that look on the faces of Obama and Biden. Man, they were fit to be tied. Biden I can understand. He always carries a sullen face in times like this. It was the look I first saw when he was caught on TV when confronted with accusation that he plagiarized the speech of MP Neil Kinnock verbatim. I knew we got him then. But Obama was something else. I never saw that furious look before. I researched his condition, and I think he's exhibiting the symptom of a man suffering from advanced case of Narcissistic Personality Disporder (NPD). I am afraid for our country, pare. Susan Be Anthony, ha-ha. I get it. Did you hear about the two Irish gays? Gerald FitzPatrick and Patrick FitzGerald?
Obama went to Boston today, but I bet he is not going to Texas to honor the dead from the fertilizer plant explosion. Why? (1) Because it's in Texas, and you know what he feels about Texas; and, (2) Visiting a devastated fertilizer company would just confuse the people, and he does not want them to make conscious comparison which is which.

Once I got a nasty look from a woman because of poker. At first, I must have made quite an impression on her on account of my raw, good looks -- AHEM! -- because she came over to the table where my buddies and I were having a good time, introduced herself, and asked me specifically if I play poker. My reply was 'poker in the front or poker in the rear?' She stormed out of there in a huff. I don't know why. What? I only meant to clarify if playing poker in the living room or in the backyard makes any difference!

One way to hear less from relatives is to disown them or, at least, give them 'the silent treatment' right off the bat. If you can't relay that message yourself, create a situation 'through the grapevine,' and neither confirm nor deny to add intrigue to the situation. Sooner or later, you will slowly notice a change where you hear less and less from relatives or even they stop communicating with you altogether. But you will not do that, will you, Roger? You are an upstanding citizen who value relationships. As for me, I do not have patience for relatives who only sees the bulge (or lack of it) on my back pocket.
Fortunately, I do not have relatives like that. I am sure a lot have. However, my problem is not relatives with open palms, but closed minds. When we sit together, we discuss the issues of the day and, failing to agree, take out our pistols and point at each other, promising to end the supposedly apolitical conversation once and for all, until cooler heads prevail.
<Sigh>. Just a day in the life of the Ilocanos.

Because Eling asked, I did a research on a few other things and found out that my paternal cousin, an old haciendero in Cagayan Valley today, and still active, is a classmate of Salvador Escudero, the father of Sen. Francis Escudero. Both of them got their Vet Med degree from UP Los Banos in 1963. How about that? Also, John Fortes, dig this. Aren't you a member of the Vanguard frat from UP? My maternal cousin Rowell Clifford Reyes was a cadet company commander in UP ROTC and is a Vanguard, too! He's enjoying his retirement somewhere in the Chicago area today. Me? When I lost my scholarship from Araneta University Foundation, I also lost my yen for the paddle. You can say I quit - or was forced out - of Phi Omega Rho fraternity. The words are the same, yes. In fact, there is a Philippine Law that considers deviation in the singing of the national anthem as a travesty and is punishable with heavy fine and imprisonment.
No, the modern aspect is the way Filipinos look at the concept of 'hero.' One doesn't have to stand before a firing squad or be punished under extremely horrendous condition to be elevated into the status of a hero. The modern version are the many OFWs who struggle to support their loved ones, as well as those who like you and your hubby and everybody else who give their precious time and effort helping the less fortunate back home.
I thought that message came across so well in the backdrop of Lupang Hinirang.

Eling, maniwala ka, may constraint din and pangalan ko. The number of people back home who keep asking me how I got the nickname 'Bill' from William is annoying. I have had to explain that in the West, 'Bill' is the traditional nickname for William. But I give everyone a choice: Bill or 'Sweetie.' The old ladies at my Tea Party group call me that, and I have no problem with that. A dear friend had a great explanation long time ago, while we were still in high school and before I abandoned use of my baptismal name 'Samuel.' 'Bill' comes from the world BILLibit - Samuel Billibit. Ha-ha!
