Welcome to the new Dursley RC Forum. This is for members only and only those invited via email will have access. This means only club members will be able to access it so it should be safe to publish personal details without them being trawled by bots etc. Please don't let anyone outside the club have access to the Forum.

80mph winds is what I've heard forecast for tomorrow! Spent the last 10 days on the turbo and no road miles at all :-(

I wonder how many will turn up tomorrow? I'm likely to be on the Turbo and will do my long ride on Monday which is forecast to be much better. I'm fed up with the weather too - I'm getting wet every weekend.

Thanks Philippa sorry to have missed the presentation, will try to pick up the trophy over Christmas.
Thanks Derek - see you at the pre-season meeting, if not before.
Agree with Neil and Mike about the weather, but riding is better than hiding!

Derek, Dave R, (Neil?), Tony and John S have you seen the national 100 is over in S Wales next year.

Severn are already talking of teams entering and reckon they can get a good girlies team together! You wouldn't want to be beaten by them now would you?

p.s. what a great day for riding (if a tad chilly)
Derek  12
10-12-2007 07:46 PM GMT
I'd be willing to ride it. Is it the fast course you have mentioned before? Also, is it the w/e before the local 100? I won't be riding both if that's the case. If we can get a full team then I'm sure we'd beat Severn.
Alan  13

Forecast OK for this Sunday, if a bit chilly. See people at Frocester at 9!

Alan, maybe it would be a good idea to use this forum to find out who intends to turn up for the Clubrun in future? (no guarantee they will, of course). At least then you won't waste yor time... and you have much further to travel than everyone else.

Derek, that was just what I was thinking, regarding the club runs. Maybe everyone who plans to go on a run can register their intention on the forum just before the Sunday. Has everyone got www access though?

Hour on the turbo today, in the kitchen as it's so cold outside!

Mike, is there any sign that Stuart Dodd could join the club next year (maybe 2nd claim?) or do you think he may join Severn? Has anyone seen him on the clubruns? For those that don't know him, he managed a 19 min 10 last year and has just moved to Slimbridge.

National "100" is on 20/7/08 and last year the WTTA "100" was on 19/8/07

Just a reminder to everyone that Regs 2nd winter warmer is this Sunday 10th Feb. Starting at 9.00 am from the cafe by the canal at Slimbridge. Distance approx 45 miles on a new course, maps provided, ride at your own pace.

Does anyone that rode today remember the finishing positions and gaps? Unfortunately, the times recorded by Reg are suspect! I need to know by tomorrow evening as I need to submit them for the Gazette.
  I'm thinking it was something like: AS+DS, followed by ND (@ 1min), then SB (@3 min), NB+PR (@5 min), AW (@6 min), MC (@8 min), MH+KC (@16 min), DP+PF (@51 min), GS (@65 min).
I will be consulting Reg again but will have to keep them as shown if he cannot clarify it.

Couple of open 10 results:
Oxford City 10 (26/4/08; in a strong southerly wind - but the right direction for this recommended h10/17R course just west of Oxford on the A420): I did 23-58 (first over-60 of several); fastest Peter Kench 21-05.
Bath CC 10 (3/5/08; on the U47 with another southerly wind, but on what was a good day): 23-13 (a PB on standard, but in a full field a few Over 60s were ahead of me). Derek did 21-09.
dave farmer  47
05-05-2008 06:58 PM GMT
Bath 10, continued ...
looking at the results I see that Stu Berryman also rode from DRC and recorded 22-48. Clearly it was a fast day with a high quality field. The flying winner in 19-23 - John Tuckett - looks like a rider to look out for in the Nationals, especially as he recorded 49-06 for a win on the H25/2 the following morning!
Brendan  48
07-05-2008 10:35 AM GMT
Not to be left out I thought I'd join the 10 mile club. I rode the Port Talbot Whls event on Sat. On what should be the fast R10/22 course. However, strong cross wind and hail on the way out, which turned into a full on head wind for the return put paid to any thoughts of a PB. My time was 25.19, not very fast but a full 1.5 mins on my best this year. Keep it up Dave you seem to be flying.
dave farmer  49
10-05-2008 06:01 PM GMT
... a week later, same time, same place. This time the Corinium 10 on U47 - and this time there's no wind!!
Three Dursley riders in the 80-limit field - and superfast times by all with a very competitive team performance.
Dave Rudland is close to the Club record on his new fixed machine on 114ins: 20-24.
Stu Berryman coming back to past form: 21-35.
... and me? this time I ride all the way out to the start - 22 miles - and ride my second-fastest ever time trial: 22-29, a massive PB on vets standard of plus 7-19. (PS: interesting to reflect that 45 years ago I did 25-03 with a top gear of about 90in at the age of 15 whilst today I rolled 54x11 all the way round apart from the start & turn !!)
(PPS: hope the slightly revised course isn't short!!)
Derek  50
10-05-2008 06:13 PM GMT
Congratulations to all of you. You had a dream day on a superb course. I'm gutted I didn't ride there today (saving myself for tomorrow) and preying that I get that fortune in the remaining events there. I think Dave R exactly matched his PB didn't he?
Neil  51
13-05-2008 06:53 PM GMT
Hi i have to retire from racing "unfortunately" So the kit has to go. I have a brand new Renn 575 disc with a 10sp dura ace 11-23 cassette this has only done 34 miles i am selling for £300 with a worn veloflex pave.
I will be at the club tt's in my car with disc if anyone wants to view.

If anyone wants to ride tandem i can still steer and brake and provide loads of ballast downhill, just dont ask me to pedal Osteoarthritis in both knees is a bugger and bloody painful.
Derek  52
18-05-2008 07:18 PM GMT
Personally, I think that even though the current club kit is more up to date than the previous design, there are features on it that I think are gimmicky/comical. Increasingly, we are photographed during races and I always feel let down by the way the kit looks on the photo. I'm not suggesting we change the colours and I have some ideas about the design. How would you feel about the club kit changing?
Neil  53
19-05-2008 08:28 PM GMT
A nice fluorescent pink kit would neither be gimmicky or comical. You would certainly get noticed at races and who knows Dynorod might want to sponsor you.
My disc and tt bike are now sold if there is any rider who wants a current skinsuit (used)that fits a larger belly they can have mine for free.I might even wash it for them !!
I also have a damaged briko aero helmet that stinks this is also going for nothing it still does the job as a helmet or an excellent mosquito repellent.
I will be a club 10's should anybody want them
Alan  54
20-05-2008 11:36 PM GMT
As the club kit is topical, maybe this is a good moment to mention that I've had a problem with my skin suit that requires sending it back - The insert hasn't been stitched in properly and is leaving a wheal on my ar*e! Imp sport were OK about it, except wanting a fiver for return postage, which I thought was a bit of a cheek as it's under a year old!

Anyone else had problems - maybe it's me....
Brendan  55
21-05-2008 03:15 PM GMT
I still consider the new kit to be NEW! And as I have a skinsuit, bib shorts and road vest, I would be very reluctant to change kit again in the near future. Also please can I have more info on what is comical and quirky?
Derek  56
21-05-2008 05:02 PM GMT
Brendan, the comical bit I refer to is the 6-pack painted on the front or is yours real? 8-)I also don't like the feathery bit on the legs and the large blank area on the back.
I have 2 skinsuits and 1 road jersey. Changing the design doesn't mean the current kit cannot be used. It just means that next time you order new kit it will be different to what you currently have. I like the red/white/green colours so I wouldn't propose to change that. And until quite recently I was using the 'old' design as well as the current.
Dave R has also expressed a wish to change the design - it's not just my desire.
   Anyone else got an opinion?
dave farmer  57
27-05-2008 07:40 PM GMT
If you'd have voted for the design which I proposed last time round, you wouldn't be having this (particular) debate !
Compared with most designs at least ours keeps you a bit safer!
Derek  58
28-05-2008 07:30 PM GMT
Dave, I admit that I did go with the majority at the time but I was never happy with the false 6-pack. I agree that the colours are good for safety.
Perhaps we could have a vote on it at the end of season meeting when most of the active club members are together. I'm not sure how many of them are able to view this forum.

------------------INTERCLUB EVENT Wednesday 4th June ----------------------
From the DRC website which is in the public domain
The annual interclub "10" with Gloucester City CC, Severn RC and Bristol South CC will be held next Wednesday June 4th on the usual Newport Towers course ( U7B) .
Please turn up early to ensure a ride and let's give the larger clubs a run for their money!
Let's have a good turnout - our usual Thursday "10" will NOT be held on the following evening.

Basically the points system has been set up so as to encourage all riders, including very slow ones, to ride. This is a great idea in principle but clearly favours the larger clubs. In fact, had our 10 riders in last year's event finished in the top 10 places, we still wouldn't have won!
Denis C  60
01-06-2008 02:18 PM GMT
Chaps, ref the comments about changing the kit I also think it could do with a redesign. I've always thought the typewriter font (courier?) used for the lettering a bit strange!

Do the companies that produce the kit offer an artwork service where they can suggest some designs?

No offence intended to whoever thought up the current design!

Saw Bo on his bike today looking resplendent in his DRC kit,Funny how he hasn't raced in years but still looks good on a bike. Perhaps a 50vet comeback is on the way.
Tony E  63
20-06-2008 02:33 PM GMT
Good to here that Bo is still riding.
Sorry to be pedantic, but the font on the strip is very old fashioned and closer to Bold Times Roman although not exactly the same!
Last time around I liked Dave F's ideas for the club strip - simple/visible/attractive, although I think I voted for Bo. If we do decide to change the design visibility must one of the main priorities, we should also aim for it to be the better than the other local clubs, to encourage new members to want to ride with us.
Good luck at the weekend!

Yes, it's sad, but true! I've crunched some calcium bits and pieces and picked up an extensive case of road rash. Thanks for the mention Derek and hope to be along to the hardriders to do some marshalling if the Bone Dr lets me out. PS Learning Point: Don't follow unknown rider's wheel who might stick their brakes on, down a hill on a straight bit of road....
PPS Whatever format we go for, I'll be needing a new club top. Mine looks like a string vest now. Bah!!

17-08-2008 02:46 PM GMT
Just a thought before the winter runs get going. We had a fairly poor turnout on last winter's club runs yet this season our club events have been more popular than ever.

Our main attraction to newcomers in the season are the Thursday evening club events yet we need to offer them something more than a club run at breakneck pace during the winter.

How about a different format for the club runs to enable riders of all abilities to meet up? Instead of a cafe stop about halfway around the route, maybe we could have it at at about 2/3? In this way, the faster riders could get in a good mileage from Frocester before the stop AND other club members still could meet up at the cafe.

This would inevitably mean a much smaller number of cafes, eg Tetbury, Malmesbury etc, but their proximity to home would make club runs more accessible to everyone.

What does everyone think?
Neil  73
17-08-2008 03:50 PM GMT
Meeting at Frocester might not be helping with the poor turnout.Years ago we always met in Dursley, then Ned took over running the club runs and as we had 4 or 5 regular riders from Stroud it made sense to meet half way.
I dont know where the majority live now but perhaps a new meeting place would benefit.
We have met at tescos in Cam at 8.45 and then ridden to frocester to find nobody there at 9. Perhaps all meeting at tesco's for 9 would help as there is a large car park for those who wish to drive to the meet.Or Kingshill by Somerfields, which is where we used to meet in the 80's

Any other suggestions????
Philippa  74
17-08-2008 04:42 PM GMT
I think Mike's suggestion make's sense as if anyone (sorry when everyone) is dropped they can make it to the cafe via a shorter route.

And I think Neil's suggestion is also good. We have more people Dursley or thereabouts and the furthest away members are in all directions (Severn Beach, Tetbury, Stroud, Thornbury) so I think Tesco's carpark in Cam is ideal.
Derek  75

I plan to go to Majorca with some friends at the end of March next year (22nd-28th), staying at Club Pollentia (a superb place to stay and great hotel). We are looking to book in the next week or so. If anyone on here is interested in joining us, you are welcome but you need to make a decision SOON. The others are non-racers but are fit enough to get out every day.

As a new club member I was pleased to read that there are plans to make the Sunday winter ride better attended.

Sunday Rides; Would it be worth considering two groups meeting and leaving the same time and place-each with a leader and predetermined average pace (say 17 mph and whatever the quick riders do) with routes designed to meet at the coffee stop.If this works then it might be used also for Reg's Winter Warmers.
It may also be worth considering continuing the Sunday rides thro' the summer on a reduced basis to keep the group together.

Sunday Rides
the Idea of two groups is a great Idea but this will surely need to depend on the numbers that turn out? But I do agree with Peter that the idea of keeping the rides going year round for the members that don’t race regularly would be a good. This could also be double edge sword, as it could be good way to attract “new” members to the club?

Sunday Rides.
Most clubs have a "club ride"and a "fast ride". If it is club policy to attract new members then these may be put off by having only the fast ride option. It would be important and not too difficult to keep the groups together at the start and at the coffee stop.
Of course if the club aims to attract new members then the Sunday rides would be only one part ofan overall recruitment programme.
