Adding to Dan's game review, I witnessed 5-balls that our guys "CRUSHED" at the plate that went right at an opposing fielder. 2-of them were nice plays made by Donnie at shortstop. So if not for some luck by them being in the right place, we could have run up the score!!

Super game tonight, folks! Though Dan Pope picked the wrong night to get hurt (with Doc J gone). Dan, please feed us updates on the injury. Steve H won the game ball by going 3 for 3, and he now is our OBA leader too. Robin went 2 for 2 tonight. Get this: We actually scored in just ONE inning, and in that inning the bottom five guys in the lineup all got hits, and then the top two guys made outs! (The third guy got a single to give us our five runs, and the inning ended before we made a third out). Loman-Ray was 2-1 going into our game tonight, so we beat a team with a winning record. Love it! No practice this weekend, no games Monday (Memorial Day Holiday), then we play at 6:00 again on Wednesday. See you Wednesday! Edited 05-23-2012 08:46 PM

Alan, I need Dan Whobrey's email address. (Also his home address and phone, but I can get that from him via email).
What a heartbreaker tonight! It's bad enough to lose in the 7th after leading the best team in the league most of the game, but to get the first man out and then give up 12 runs in a row before getting the second out - unbelievable.
We did hold them scoreless in three different innings. Here's how their scoring went, inning by inning: 0 - 3 - 0 - 3 - 0 - 5 - 14
And ours (not including the freebies): 3 - 3 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 4
So we had a four-inning goose egg, and only four baserunners in those four innings. (Not that it mattered much when you look at their last inning).
We did have some impressive hitting. Mike H went 4 for 4 and had our only extra-base hit (a double), thereby earning the game ball.
Bill M and Steve C went 3 for 4. I was 3 for 3, and Steve H was 2 for 3.
Did we have fun? For the first six innings, yes.
Wednesday night we play Loman-Ray. Nine of their guys are 65 or over, but they are still a good team. And the game is at 6:00, so our outfielders won't have to fight the lights. Fingers crossed!

Dan...A friend of mine, Dan Whobrey, would like to join the team. I told him to come by tonight and we would try to get him into the game. Given our shortage, perhaps this is an opportune time for him to join. You may know his wife, Ruthann Whobrey, who has been teaching IT courses at Parkland for many years.

Tonight could be a bit dicey.
We will not have Dennis or Jim tonight, and Mike M and Bill will be late because they are playing on other fields at 7:00. They'll probably be late for our game, because senior games start at 6:00 while the other leagues all start at 6:15.
However, Steve H will be here, so we should have ten of our own guys to start. And I've already talked to Donnie Anglen, and he will play with us tonight, so that's eleven. I'm going to let Donnie play the whole game, because he's doing us a favor by playing for us.
Well, I should have it all sorted out by gametime. See you 7:30ish!

Thanks, Michael.
Batting practice was weird today! Last Sunday was Mother's Day, and we had 10 or 12 people at practice.
Today wasn't a holiday, and we had just six. (And for the first half-hour, two). Graduations, maybe?
We probably won't practice again until June 10; I'll keep you posted.

Batting practice noon to two Sunday at Dodds 3.
Our last practice until June 10, unless we can get Dexter.
Sunscreen and a cap might be a good idea - it's supposed to be 90 degrees.

A hard-to-swallow loss tonight to a team we usually beat. Two things did us in: Errors when there were two outs gave them almost all of their runs, and we scored only one run in the last four innings. We left nine players on base in those four innings, and we lost 10-9. I do think we'll beat them next time! A high point: After just two games, everybody on our team has gotten to base safely now; nobody has a zero on-base average. Highlights of the game: We looked great in the first two innings, with 6 of our first 7 batters getting hits, allowing us to score our maximum 5 runs before we got 3 outs. We were almost as good the second inning, with the first two batters making outs and then five hits in a row, with three runs scoring. Bill, Mike H, and Jim all went 3 for 4, and Greg and I went 2 for 3. Mike M, Mike H, and Dennis all hit doubles. And Joe had two RBIs. Even though we lost, I had a great time tonight. It is so much fun to play a team that is about equal to us in skill/talent level, and most of the guys on Leonard's are good-natured and fun to compete with. And the weather could not have been better! No game Wednesday, then our next three games are against upper-level teams. It's nice to get a free run an inning against the upper-level teams, but it's nicer to actually score a lot of runs. We can and will do that! By the way, after the game, I went across to Field 4, where my other team (the young guys) was playing. I got there in time to pitch the last inning, and it took me four pitches (a called strike and three flyouts). Their opponents thanked me for not being there the whole game. And somebody in our dugout asked where the term "bye" (for an off-day) came from. All I could find was this: "...it comes from cricket, where a bye is a type of play where the batsman can advance and score without ever hitting the ball." Edited 05-20-2012 07:02 PM

Excellent, Robin!
Now that we have a game under our belts and we all know where field 7 is, no need to post that you'll be there - just let me know when you WON'T be there!
I'm optimistic about our game tonight. Leonard's is another bottom-division team, and we usually play them pretty even-up.

High 75 tomorrow - should be a great day for softball practice!
If you're not out with your mother, c'mon out to Dodds 3 from noon to 2:30 (arriving late is cool - I know a lot of people are in church until noon).
If you can come, please bring a dollar to help pay for field rental. I appreciate it!

One more point I just noticed while looking at the scorecard for tonight's game... We held our opponents scoreless in the second, fifth, and sixth innings.
Since they didn't bat in the bottom of the 7th, they failed to score in half of the innings they batted.

Well, gang, even with all our opening night jitters, our final score was respectable (11-8). I think we are better than we played tonight.
We gave them a bunch of free runs, but we also had some nice defensive plays, and our hitting looks not-so-bad on paper.
Bill got on base all three times he batted, and Mike H was 2 for 3. Mike M hit a nice double. And even though I went 0-for-3, I lead the team in RBIs!
The stats are up (click the TEAM STATS link up top of the board). Here's a word of explanation for the newbies:
We don't do batting averages, we do on-base percentages. You get credit for an on-base if you make it to first without forcing out a runner in front of you. So a hit, a walk, an error - it doesn't matter, if you're safe at first and no outs were made elsewhere, you get credit for an on-base.
The batting order will change often, and you can earn your way up the ladder by getting on base. Here's the story:
http://danhughesbooks.com/battingorder.htm
Reminder: Practice noon to 2:30 or so on Sunday at Dodds 3. Bring a dollar for park rental.
