Glad I signed on to check the board today even although I was getting tired of reading some of the drivel that was posted. Sad to hear about Geordie Burnett, he was one of the good guys, and my condolences to the family. Hopefully this board will stay in the adult section of life since we will know who we are talking to.
Belated happy Tartan Day to anyone in the US. I attended the parade in New York City and had some fun. Jimmy Mac don't feel bad my kilt does not fit me either.

There is a new message board up:

http://www.argylls-veterans.co.uk

it looks very professional and has the potential to be well managed.

I have not signed up yet but will. The only comment I have that it

has a lot of catergories to pick from, maybe too many but I do like there
is a joke section seperate from the general forum.

Well done that Argyll

When all the nonsense was going on at the other board I got involved in a thread about moderating boards. I said it was easy to set up a forum and be able to moderate the messages. I said I'd set one up but wouldn't post the link because I couldn't be bothered with all the hassle. I don't want to take away from what others have done but it would make sense to have a few old argylls to be able to monitor a messageboard, not control it, just make sure anything posted is relevant.
Take your point about categories - went a bit overboard there. But as you say you can have areas where folk can talk about different things. I kind of put it to the back of my mind until this message. As for the domain name well the main argylls website seems to be http://www.argylls.co.uk so adding veterans on seemed a logical step.
I may let people register I don't know yet. Will it be worth all the hassle???

AROUND 600 soldiers based at a Kent barracks are being deployed to Southern Afghanistan to join coalition forces in the troubled Helmand Province.

For many in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland – with an average age of 21 – it will be their first taste of action.

For others from Howe Barracks in Canterbury this will be the latest in a number of tours to assist coalition forces, both in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Five companies will be in Helmand Province for six months as part of Operation Herrick 8, under the leadership of Commanding Officer Lt Col David Richmond.

Lt Col Richmond, 41, believes the purpose is clear. “We can’t have countries providing safe havens for international terrorists and our main operation is all about protecting the Afghan people,” he said.

Away from the front line, he admits it can be a tough time for the families left at home. “Time away weighs heavily on them,” he said. “They know the risks, they see them for themselves every night on TV."

GREEN ARMY GO TARTAN BARMY 07:30 - 01 April 2008
Plymouth Argyle fans have proved their allegiance to their Scottish manager, Paul Sturrock, by choosing a new tartan away kit for next season and unveiling it today.
The Green Army voted in their droves for the new 2008-09 away strip, and decided it should pay homage to manager Luggy, not to mention the large Scottish contingent on the Pilgrims' playing staff.
Luggy, has expressed his pleasure at the fans' selection, revealed on April 1. He said he felt the kit would "spur on the lads, and certainly rouse passions in a large percentage of this squad."
He said: "I am very, very delighted, and a wee bit humbled, that our supporters have gone down the road of choosing this kit.
"I am very, very sure that, when there's a blood and snotters match, the tartan will help the boys bring to mind the determination of people like William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.
Appropriately, Argyle's very beginnings are rooted in Scottish history, with the club being named after the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders regiment based in the city when the Pilgrims were first formed.
This has been given the go-ahead by the FA, and Argyle will debut the new kit in their final away match of this season at Wolves on Sunday, May 4.
Chief executive Michael Dunford also praised the fans' choice.
He said: "I think the supporters here have shown great sense in choosing a strip that reflects the history and tradition of the club."I am hopeful that, in time, we will be able to move away from having green as our home strip and adopt tartan as our first-choice design."Instead of Semper Fidelis, we could have A Scottish Soldier, which is a particular favourite of the manager's, or Scotland the Brave."

This was Taken from the Plymouth Herald online. Check out the message below that was posted ref: this story:)

"Thought id just like to say that a Tartan Strip looks the bees knees if ye ask me and thats coming from a Member of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Good luck to the Pilgrims for the rest of the season.

FAO - Argyll News

Yes i posted on that News thread from Plymouth. I was gauged into posting that by other Pilgrim fans from their own board who'm i'm a member of. It was meant to wind up certain fans who read that media everyday, the amount of hate mail ( banter )i received was unbelieveable but all fun at the end of the day. Alot of the Pilgrim fans actually sent letters to Plymouth Argyle F.C. in hoping that it would actually take off. Suppose it wouldnt be that bad to see them play in the Argyll tartan if it merrited.

Jim,I think the concept that you are trying to put together is the way forward, could I suggest that you look in on the K.O.S.B. Association!s Edinburgh Branch Web Sight as to categories ect.The number of sights that are now coming on line regarding our Regiment is very pleasing and can only be for the good of all, and it would be a good thing if the Regimental Association branch secretary`s could post on your board to let use know how the the Regimental Family as a hole is doing. just a thought Jim.

I can understand why when launching his sight "Proud Argyll" did not use his own name, but he should now rectify this now that his board has had a good start, lets hope that the other gents forgot, and will put their names to there posts in future. As regards US Time, the providers must be from across the pond.

Hello Gents:

As you know I set this site up for all to enjoy as an alternative to
others and not to compete. I don't mind if Argylls come on here and
use the site using screen names as long as the posts are coherent,
respectful and tastful that is all that is required and most important.

In order to be able to manage this effectivly and with the least hassel
using a screen name is the way to go. I suggest that when Jim gets his
site up he has moderators using screen names, that way no one is a target. Also I know guys that do not use their own names for work purposes etc, and just an FYI, if you are ever signing up for a board never give out all your details, full name, date of birth, address, info on family members, etc.

Wullie, I think you'll find that a lot of the message board servers are based in the States, this one, the bravenet etc. There maybe a way I can set the time to GMT but I haveny worked that one oot yet.

All the best Argylls.

First of all I set the argyll veterans forum up to show what can be done - I tend to go for the overkill and work backwards, take out what's not needed.
Dave, thanks for the comments. The K.O.S.B site is good, I like it, but what do you mean by categories?
I guess people can register if they want and see what happens - I just don't want to be the 'fat controller' it needs maybe 5 or 6 folk to monitor things - that would be people with real names and locations.

Jim If you are taking the time to put this project together ,then I would like to help you in monitoring the board,I am not a Computer whiz kid but am willing to help. and before people start with the rank thing, their is no rank in civvy street.Remember Jim is looking for help,so lets back him.

Davy,
Okay, the KOSB site is a website as opposed to a forum. As I have a personal interest, here is what I may be willing to do.
There's 3 messageboards( at least) so maybe there's no need for another one just now. Having said that. I was in touch with the regimental museum recently about a photograph and, to cut a long story short, I wrote up my memories about previous tours( they have little of that). So, If I made a website, similar to the KOSB for argylls, that folk would need to register on maybe we could build a history of active service, along with links to other relevant stuff.
I'd be prepared to look at that, leaving this and other boards to get on with what they are doing. I'd still be looking at folk helping out etc. How does that sound?

Jim,
As I said Mate,Its your project, for what it is worth I think a website is they way forward I quoted the K.O.S.B site as an example as it is well run.Yes I agree on your point regarding the building of a history of active service/memories of our life within the Regiment and thing we discover about our Regimental history.I am interested in the great war and could cover that area of military history.
My point being Jim if it is an open site,it is open to abuse as we have seen on the other board, and as their could be controversial points brought to the board they should be debated in a grown up manner with constructive comments.
Food for thought Jim...
My offer ot help still stands Jim

Davy,
Not so much my project. I do a lot of research for my local heritage group. They use the info but it is for the town, I just enjoy the finding info - something the Argylls taught me in Ireland. It's the same here. People know a bit of history but where is it. for example, I know of at least 1 Argyll who was in Vietnam with the yanks.
I'm putting a website together and it will be one that you need to register on. It will be open for folk to view but you need to register - name, email so no hiding.
Donny, Not financial support, I work on the web so I have space. Any help I would need would be in identifying people. Between the various boards I know a few people. I'm sure you and Davy know a good few as well - basically preventing non-argylls messing the site up. Give me a couple of days

Joe the Plymouth Branch at the moment is basically a branch in name only,At the last count their were 30+ ex members in the South West Area but only a hand full ever attended meetings, the only part of the branch that is functioning is the Welfare who do a great job.We were supposed to hold a Burns Supper on behalf of the Regimental Association each year, but their were more guests than members,so they stopped it.so the dinner would have to be a fish supper down union street Ha Ha.

I came across the following web site which has a tribute page
for Craig O'Donnell, the young Argyll who died in Kabul in 06.
Please visit the site and show that ALL ARGYLL's care and never
forget. You can light a candle and or leave a message.

Have added links for two new posting areas, (see above). One for reunions and one for jokes & banter if you so feel.

Also, links to other well managed Argyll sites.

For Ian Thompson - if you check out the bottom link of the above pair it will take you to the Regimental Association home page and on the bottom of the left column you will find another link to another veterans msg board you can ask for information on your grandfather there and also you may find a link to the army records office which says you can get a copy of anyones army record. I will try to find the exact link for you but at least you have a starting point.

I've set you a user account. If you go to the website, click the 'contact us'

Do you mean Allister MacAulay? If so I believe he's somewhere on the east coast, Rosyth rings a bell. Go to the regimental website http://www.fifeweb.net/argylls/association.htm and email them or the Grangemouth Branch

Probably closer to the town, infact, what was the name of that one the band stayed in back in 98, think they held the Games dinner in there also, or maybe one in Lincoln as you say. Is that the town they do the parade in ?

Cheers

That would be the Beacon Motel, but since 1998, due to numerous swamped mattresses, drummers have been band...only joking Ghost, not all drummers!
Here is a link to the Lincoln-Woodstock Chamber of Commerce for area lodgings. If its just for two of you a room at the Beacon would do. If it's for more than two you might want to check out the Condos. As long as whatever you get is located in Lincoln or North Woodstock you will be very close to the Games. Prior to booking make sure you ask if the Highland Games shuttle bus stops at your hotel/motel/condo unit.

Sid McEwan - i was in the bn from 65 until 79 - mainly in HQ coy and was also in Balaklava coy - I ran the clothing store in Osnabruck and handed it over just before I left in Catterick. You can find me on Alan Youngs Argylls history site 2 or 3 times.
Stewart Spence - you can also check that site for information about your uncle - it is the second one on the list above - make sure you check both parts because of the dates. I knew your uncle well and we both served in Balaklava coy - he was also with B coy so you should be able to find him

Cheers Ting think I,ve got you sussed now and Stewart your uncle was my first platoon commander in B Coy Kirknewton early 1973 as we were short of officers he was a seargent then and went onto become my Company Seargent Major in Osnabruck in the 1970,s Wool the Bull as he was sometimes known was a very fit soldier who would do a lot of shouting at you if you were out of line but his bark was worse than his bite and I always found him to be a very fair guy all round and instead of a visit in front of the Company Commander Wooly would give you a "clip roon the ear" all in all I was sorry when I heard he passed away as I have many fond memories of him.
