Dear Fran, Katy and Chet, Life is indeed unfair when such a wonderful person is taken from us all way too soon. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Chesley leaves a huge legacy and we will always be grateful for her life long dedication to the NPS and Eastern National and for her friendship. She made such a difference for so many! joan anzelmo

Dear Fran and Katie,

Maureen and I would like to express our deepest sympathy. We have a lot of fond memories of Chesley over the many years I was associated with Eastern. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time. May God bless you both.

Fran and Katie,

You are in our thoughts and our hearts. I will always remember meeting Chesley when we both became new moms. We were lucky enough to see our daughters grow and become the beautiful young women we knew they'd be.

I'm thankful Chesley was a part of our lives.

I never physically met Chesley, but after speaking to her on the phone on many, many occasions, I could feel not only her sense of humor, but her compassion and love of life. One could tell, after a simple, short conversation, that Chesley was a wonderful person- - she is and will always be greatly missed.

My Sincere Condolences to Fran,Katy and of course Chet,

When I think of Ches, I think of a managers trip she and I took in the mid 90's to go white water rafting in WV. She was always up for any new challenge! Like that river she was a Force of Nature!

Ches, it was a short trip, but you packed in 10 Life times. I'm glad I got to meet you in one.

Peace.

Working with Chesley at Eastern National was a unique and fun experience. I still keep a "to do" list in the same way she did, minus the wite out. What a tireless and amazing leader!

In Memorium

I was just remembering the first time I met Chesley. She was still in college (or maybe graduated that year) and had come to help with the 1981 Bicentennial of the Surrender at Yorktown. Chesley was brimming with energy and enthusiasm. I was a new business manager at Colonial national Historical Park. I remember in the years that followed how proud her father Chet Harris was when we spoke about her. A few years later, Chesley and I were pregnant at the same time. She was this amazing woman that never missed a day of work during her pregnancy, while I was having intravenous feeding and missed many days of work. Her resolve was strong then and all through her battle with cancer.

She dedicated her life's work in support The National Park Service through her efforts at Eastern National Park and Monument Association.

Thank you to Fran and katy for sharing Chesley with Eastern National and all of us. She was a wonderful human being.

Dear Chesley,
After reading all the other messages, I realized that I didn't get a chance to know you as well as the others, but wanted you to know that you DID leave a lasting impression at the last manager's meeting in Atlanta.
We had a "hat contest" and, after awarding prizes in the various categories, you awarded a "special" prize for my Fort Macon hat. That was lovely, but what impressed me most was the notation "loved the hat" you wrote at the bottom of my next extra compensation award letter. Just the fact that you remembered someone you had only met once and made mention of a silly little hat made me feel part of Eastern National. Thank You.

Our parks are on the rather small side, and certainly not much on the profitable side, but for the last 14 years I know beyond a doubt that we had the support of Eastern National.

A few years ago, I cannot remember what year, Chesley did our annual audit herself here, and, as usual, I frenzied myself to make the store and the park look good. Within five minutes she had all of us at ease, and was truly a pleasure to work with and supportive of what we were trying to do here.

Eastern National has been nothing but supportive to the National Parks in Western Pennsylvania, and for that I'll be eternally grateful.

Dear Chesley,

It’s very hard to encapsulate our 30 year fun ride called Eastern National, but I’ll try. When Eastern hired us both out of “grade school”, little did we know that it would be a 30 year run of hard work mixed in with a lot of fun!!!

It started on our first trip together when we laughed all the way home from NY on the train because of the lady with the box.

It continued with our trek home from Chicago when our flight was cancelled at one airport and we had to race across town to catch the last flight back to Philly at another.

It continued with the great tarmac adventure when we saw every Alaskan airport in four hours.

It continued with our skiing (if can call it that) down the “easy slope” from the top of the mountain in Alaska.

It continued with our last manager’s meeting together in Atlanta where we spent every night playing Apples-to-Apples at the hospitality suite.

Along the way we worked hard (at least you did) to make sure the mission of Eastern National was fulfilled. I want to thank you for your support throughout the years and for all of the “it continued” stories that we shared.

Pete

Chesley,

The SE Region will miss you. I especially will will miss you. My first time working with you was at San Juan when we needed your assistancee for our 50th Anniversary celebration. Later when some of our employees lost everything in a hurricane you and EN raised funds to help them. One employee broke down crying when I handed him a check from you. EN, and most importantly you, have always been there for us and have made a diffence. I hope that I can repay in some manner by ensuring that EN concerns are raised constantly during the Cooperating Associations Steering Committee deliberations. Thank you for everything that you have done for the SER and for me.

Our thoughts and prayers go with you.

Dear Chesley, working with you at Eastern National on the Board (and earlier in the National Park Service) is an experience I will always remember. Your leadership, decisiveness, knowledge, and dedication shaped all of us in many ways, and set the stage for the strength of your organization. Plus the trips we took -- remember that beautiful day in Moab, blue cloudless sky, red rock and cool pool? What fabulous experiences we have had. All the best to you and your family. Fondly, Mary

Hi Chesley, I been thinking about you. Some news from my world...sales are finally on a upward trend in my region. Yippee!!! Fredericksburg had a wonderful 145th Anniversary celebration in December and that has propelled sales to be the best they've had in awhile. We are preparing for the 145th at Chancellorsville in May, so I am confident the trend will continue. It is a good feeling to be able to report that! I spoke to Rebecca Harriett today, and she asked about you. Did you know that Cindy MacLeod is now Supt. at Independence? And, Vidal Martinez is now at Upper Delaware. Lots of changes in my Region.

Thanks again for all of your work for Eastern. It has ben a pleasure to be part of a wonderful organization!

Dear Chesley,
I did not get to know you as I have only been with Eastern National at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area less than a year. Johnnie Pilk that works here remembers working with you and said you were a dear person and a very good person to work with. I wish you all the best and for you to be able to enjoy your retirement. Take care and may God Bless You.

Chesley-- I was so saddened to hear you're retiring from Eastern. I remember the excitement I felt when I first heard you were going to get that position and I have kept that excitement as you have wended your way and Eastern's way through wonderful situations and not-so-wonderful ones. You've done it all with aplomb and resilience, with good humor and a clear eye. Bringing Parks and History into Eastern was long needed; I only wish every park were fully part of Eastern/Western. Maybe someday. When I go into parks and see all the books I think of you (and help by buying several);when I watch over people pour over Eastern's glassware at Jamestown I think of you. May you find ways to enjoy your time now and may you be with us a long time. You are always welcome to visit Charlie [Clapper] and me in Williamsburg-- the guest room awaits you. So do the daffodils. You and your family are in our prayers. Cheers, and thanks for ALL you've done to serve your nation, history education and the NPS, Heather

Hi Chesley,

I was sad to discover that you had retired from Eastern National. I wish I had the opportunity to see you before you retired. I appreciate the opportunity you gave me to be of service to you and Eastern National. It was indeed a pleasure. I consider myself blessed to have known you. Get the rest that you need and take care of yourself. Hopefully our paths will cross again.

Hi Chesley--Sorry it took some time before I posted a message. I can never forget you--we have been through some amazing times together...of course workwise you were always there to support and advise whether it was a Northeast bookstore or assisting international parks. But being with you--was how I will always remember you...We were together on 9-11 in Miami and you and I drove ourselves through Florida to finally catch a plane in Jacksonville for Philly. We spent a terrifying time on a rail cart going up a mountain in Cinque Terra--if you can do that you can do anything. We spent many hours talking about fund raising and doing the best to support our parks. We were friends not just co-workers. I know that the last few years have been painful...but you hung in; you always have and will continue to hang in. Enjoy the next chapter in your life....write it the way you want.

Love

Hi Chesley,
Willart Publishing has had a happy relationship with Eastern National since 1991 and, although we have never met, I'm sure you've been a major factor in the professionalism and courtesy that was extended to us through the Park Service. We here wish you all the best.

Hi Chesley,
I'm not sure if you remember me, but I worked for Ed Elvidge, the photographer back in the mid 1980s. Ed printed all (or most) the postcards and calendars Eastern National at that time. We were located in Southwest Harbor ME near Acadia National Park. I really admired your organizational abilities and professionalism. You were a pleasure to work with. A good lesson for all to take with them, if you are good at your job and maintain professionalism you will always be remembered!! It was 25 years ago and I still think of you when I see the calendars and postcards from other national parks that I've visited.

I certainly hope this e-mail finds you better, or at least comfortable. All the best to you. Thanks for setting the bar high!

Hi Chesley,
   I am Karen's husband, Buddy.
Karen and I just celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary last week.
I remember when I was courting Karen, she would talk about you and her job at Eastern National. It was awhile before I got a chance to meet you and folks including Dan Brown and his wife Linda at dinner at the Bistro on the Biltmore Estate. I was honored to be invited to the dinner and to finally meet the lady I had heard so much about. I was not disappointed and I had a GREAT time.

Over the years you helped Karen become the manager she is today, which I am so proud of.

Remember? At the dinner, I wrote everyone's names on the back of my business card so I would have a cheat sheet if I needed one. After repeating your name "Chesley" all day I pulled it off. Then after the dinner you and I talked about Karen before you left.

When you retired from Eastern National you left someone a hard job in filling your shoes and walking in the footsteps you walked for so many years. Being a former Marine I appreciate and admire a leader like you have been, that can walk the walk and talk the talk and make hard decisions that I know you have had to make over the years. Sometime I know you would have been misunderstood by many but in the long run everyone knows you made the right decisions that have made Eastern National a company everyone can be proud of. Every time I drive or hike on the Parkway I will always think of you. "THANKS!"

I hope this finds you doing as well as possible and I wish you the best and you are in my prayers.
Semper Fi Buddy

Dear Chesley. You and I met in 1985 not long after I became ENP&MA (the old full name) coordinator at Sandy Hook. You are one of those friends who I felt as if I had known for years after only a few months. Thanks so much for your support at Gateway-Sandy Hook and the many parks after. You dedication to Eastern National and to our National Park units was solid and sincere. Your personal support for me is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much and best wishes. Dear Chesley,
Thank you so much for everything you have done for Eastern National, national parks and the mission we hold so dear, and thank you for everything you've done to help me grow from a seasonal associate at Craggy Gardens (where we turned a hand crank to ring sales on a mechanical cash register) through a career filled with wonderful experiences and opportunities.

Your ability to connect genuinely with everyone from a front-line ranger or associate to an NPS director is special. You have invested and invited countless exchanges of trust and collaboration to open better doors to the future.

Chesley- Thanks for all of the truly outstanding work you have done for Eastern National Park and Monument Association and of course for the National Park Service. Your hard work, dedication, commitment and, equally important, your creativity, have made great contributions to the mission of the NPS. It has been my pleasure to have worked with you over the years and I have marvelled at how strong Eastern National has become under your leadership. I believe that it is important for you to know that your hard work is appreciated by many, many employees and former employees. Thank you again.

Dear Chesley,

From all of us at the George Wright Society, thank you so much for all that you've accomplished during your tenure at the helm of Eastern. All of us who work in or on behalf of parks are part of a community, and it is an honor for me, personally, to be able to say that I share that community with a person of high integrity and accomplishment such as yourself.

I know that Eastern remains in good hands now that the baton has been handed back to George for awhile. Please know that you have the very best wishes, and the deepest appreciation, from all of us at the GWS.

Thanks, Chesley -- for your personal support of our mission, and for your friendship.

Hi, Chesley-
How does one say 'goodbye' to you? Well, I don't WANNA, I don't HAFTA, and I'm just not GONNA ...

You have been a source of inspiration for Assn associates far and wide, providing thoughtful guidance, behavior by example, leadership with dignity, and RESULTS from a potful of dedicated HARD WORK. I appreciated your warmth, sincerity and SENSE OF HUMOR...and the fact that you weren't just your 'job'. A multi-faceted GEM of a person, you have many other skills, interests and joys: being a mother, being a wife, enjoying adventures all over the globe.

You are respected by all, but duplicated by no one. When you came in a room, people noticed. You were expert in what you did, honest and straighforward in your information, there was a presence about you. (I might add as an aside that you were also a very snappy dresser!) The things I liked best about you were your optimism and how fun it was to be around you...You have one of the BEST LAUGHS on the planet. Learning from you was always a treat!

Use that energy, optimism, grace and that marvelous spirit as weapons against this health challenge. I'm confident that you will 'see to it' that this challenge is met and vanquished quickly.

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I look forward to hearing that great laugh again soon, my friend.

SEE YOU LATER-

Dear Chesley:

Enormous gratitude is expressed from the staff at Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site for your service to this park and others in supporting an organization that allows parks to share their mission and promote stewardship in a lasting way. Your time at Eastern National saw the park make great strides towards keeping Carl Sandburg’s written words in print, and being able to offer quality theme-related merchandise. Through Eastern National percent donations the park has been able to sustain a 40-year old partnership with the Flat Rock Playhouse, support teacher workshops to create curriculum-based education programs, provided poets to enhance interpretive programs, and kept park-produced brochures in print. Your dedication to creating an environment of park support has enabled more visitors to appreciate the legacy and significance of the Sandburg story. Please accept a hearty “thank you” and “goodbye” to a true “Sandburger family member” whom we will miss.

Both Antoinette and I wish you the very best and hope you are soon able to regain your health.

It has been a pleasure to have known you through the years. You were so helpful to me at the various locations I served during my career for which I am extremely grateful. And it was good to see you at the EN meetings, particularly the one in New Orleans when I had just been appointed as a superintendent to Russell Cave NM years ago. That gave me the opportunity to meet other superintendents out of the Southease Region long before the National Superintendent's Conference in St. Lewis.

Additionally, there were several projects in my parks where EN's contributions to our efforts made a real difference.

Thanks for being a friend and again we wish you a great retirement.

Chesley,

When we all look back on our careers and lives, our main hope is that we have made a positive difference with our families, communities, in the work place, and with the people who cross our paths on a daily basis.

You, my friend, have made a positive impact in all of these areas as a daughter, wife, mother, leader within your church and community, and as a staunch supporter and friend of the National Park System.

You have led the charge in supporting members of the National Park Service family during difficult times, particularly in the aftermath of some of our greatest natural disasters.

On behalf of all of us within the Northeast Region (your home region), We want you to know that you have the support of our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Chesley - How wonderful it was to work with you on many projects at Colonial. You kept the goals of education and visitor service front and center, but always within the bounds of cost-effectiveness. That's one reason the Eastern dollars covered so much territory. And your willingness to try new approaches gave all of us the confidence to ask you for assistance to blaze new trails. One example of that was EN doing the new fee collection at Yorktown in the 1990's when, because of hiring restrictions and other problems, we could not have gotten off the ground. Working through terribly difficult times was another of your attributes. The Jamestown Glasshouse would not be operating today if you had not been willing to invest the time, effort and money to keep it alive after the big hurricane. So, Chesley, you should take great satisfaction that your life and your work with EN and NPS has made a tremendous difference for resource preservation in the National Park System and for the American peoples understanding and enjoyment of the national parks. We shall keep you in our prayers and send you our best today. We often pray for others over our lunch break, we value our customers and know that if they are human, they need our prayers as we need theres.

Dear Chesley, February 6, 2008
Although we have been doing business for many years, I have only spoken to you briefly two times. I have written eight books on the war, if you will recall The Truth about Slavery is the only one you stock. You made such nice comments about my book, that I have repeated them to other bookstores many times.
Thank-you so much for all the help you have been to me, over the years. I hope your retirement years will be filled with happiness and health. God Bless!

Southernly Yours,

Chesley,

I know Eastern National will miss your fulltime efforts on their behalf very much. I hope and pray for a miracle regarding your health situation. I appreciated so much your communication early on to me regarding my health situation.

I recall your visit to my home in the first years I knew you. What a delightful individual I found you to be! Through the years during CNPCA and APPL board days, I have admired your judgment and thoughts on the many issues we dealth with. Also, thank you for sharing your wonderful creativity with us.

May God give you and your family the strength, courage, and peace to abide the future, whatever that might be. I am very glad our paths crossed.

In His name,

Dear Chesley,
On my journey with this cooperating Association business there have been so many folks that I truly looked up to for guidance and inspiration, and always at the top of the list was Chesley. I learned ealy on that when you spoke, to not only pay attention, but to take close note of what you had to say. More though, than the proffessional side, I have valued the your freindship which will not only be missed by myself, but all of us in this business. The best of luck with your future efforts and endeavors.

Dear Chesley,

We have traveled a long road together as executive directors of cooperating associations and as fellow Board members of CNPCA and APPL. Our journeys have taken us near and far -- from the Smokies, to Hawaii, to the Northeast and even to the Italian National Parks! And along the way, we experienced the growth of our organizations, the growth of our kids, and the growth of our friendship.

I will deeply miss the fun, collegiality, energy and friendship you brought to all of us in the cooperating association arena. You are an amazing leader who inspired so many of us with your incredible zest, your quest for excellence, and your generosity. As such a dynamic leader, you were also a very warm and personal individual who I felt very lucky to get to know over so many years -- and enjoyed most the occasions when we had the time to relax, share stories, and talk about the things we care about.

Your impact on cooperating associations and your service to our national parks is in its own league, Chesley. It is indeed a legacy and one that shows such tangible results across our national parks and public lands. You should be exceptionally proud of that legacy and of the many friends and colleagues who admired your leadership and personal touch.

Of course, I remember all the times we laughed and had fun together -- from our bus rides in Italy to the CNPCA and APPL conventions, the many trips to Washington, the endless challenges, the most recent crisis, and the latest NPS management guidelines to review. Through it all, we keep our spirits and enjoyed each other's company.

Thank you for everything and know that you are in the minds and hearts of all of us,

Greg

Dear Chesley,

My name is Helen Schwartz and my Company is Artistry in Photography.
I am writing to Thank You and to wish you all the best Blessings with
your retirement! David Wagner and Bernadette L. Atkins in Gettysburg gave me
my start with Eastern National by submitting my work for review to the NPS to be reviewed to be
sold in their store. I have been doing book signings at that location
and have included a photograph here of myself with Bernadette at one of
my signings this past year. When my work was first approved by Eastern
National, I was told by many people that it was an honor comparable to winning the
Academy Award. I am very proud to have my products for sale in many
Eastern National Book Stores and have enjoyed traveling to them and
meeting the people in each of those sites personally. All of the
Eastern National people I have dealt with have been so helpful,
knowledgeable, and pleasant and that is a reflection on the Company and
on You. So,

Thank you very much!

Chesley, Your passion for the National Park's is a true and lasting gift you have given to the nation, and especially, those of us who are lucky to be part of the Eastern National organization. It was great to finally work with the famous Chesley Moroz, and I was amazed that you took the time to have lunch with me and come to visit Salem and Saugus in my early days at these parks. Hi Chesley:

I have on the beautiful pink bracelet of encouragement you sent me a couple of years ago. I wore it today in hopes that it would help me find the words to express what so many of us deeply feel about you, your influence, and your presence in our lives. I bet you don’t know that many of the treasured “things” in my office and at home came from you – plaques, pictures, books, my keychain, even my really cool magnets on my refrigerator! (I feel you wincing!) But many here have already said it – “There simply are no words!”

So then I was at lunch, and I got this fortune cookie. It said, “When you row another person across the river, you get there yourself,” Confucius. And I thought maybe that is it! Well – at least part of it anyway. Sort of. See, you have metaphorically rowed so many of us through lakes, puddles, rivers, whitewater and hurricanes in our parks, lives and careers. You have just always been a part of every park and every place and most events, parties, and award ceremonies I have ever been to. You were there at the good times and first-up at the tough times, personally and professionally.

Your example is remarkable. You are the epitome of what it means to be a kind, polished, intelligent, professional leader, woman, and human being. You know, I can not think of anyone in the NPS more admired than you are. I truly mean that.

Those of us whom have spent our careers along side yours are incredibly lucky. We are better people, and we are a much better National Park Service, because you are in our lives. There are really only two words I can say. So thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, and thank you! And thanks again

Much Love,
  Patty

Dear Chesley,

Your life and your career have been an inspiration to all of us in terms of your commitment not only to parks but also to the National Park Service.

Time after time you and your organization stepped up to the plate to support the service, whenever and however they requested.

Chesley, I feel that you can take great pride in knowing that you have put in a full measure of service to the parks and to Eastern National. None of us, no matter how hard we try, can really control the future, rather the future lies in the hands of those who follow us. We can however know in our own hearts that we have done everything we could in support of the things we believe in.

I will miss you Chesley. I will miss your smile and your heart-felt laugh. The parks and associations around this great nation will also miss your professional contribution to cause of national parks. You have served the parks and the visitors of those parks well.

May you find peace in your heart Chesley that you have given a full measure and much much more.

To the NPS slogan of "experience your America" might be added a cooperating slogan "share the passion." You showed us how to do it, Chesley. Through the many-but-not-enough shared experiences of management and operations training courses, CNPCA conventions, and APPL stretegic planning, we have learned to run a business, ask the touch questions, care and have fun and laugh til the tears ran dry. Dear Chesley, You are representative of the best, it's clear from the many tributes from colleagues. What a worthy government service you have dedicated yourself to. I can't think of many treasures on this planet more worth preserving for future generations of Americans than our spectacular National Parks. Your underfunded agency faces special challenges--keeping morale up may be one, and you must be a champ at that. Nothing like an inspired leader to lead the troops into battle! You somehow kept workimg in between the surgeries and chemo treatments because you loved your job and the National Park Service with all of your heart and soul. Chesley,
Your commitment to cooperating associations as an advocate, leader, and former APPL board member has been instrumental in raising the visibility, quality and impact of these unique nonprofit partners in their role of promoting public understanding, appreciation and support of public lands. You built a great team at Eastern National, and oversaw the development of an impressive array of products that tell the story of our nation's parks, monuments, and historic sites.

We will miss you at the APPL convention this year, and also your expertise and input to the many educational and professional development aspects of our organization. I respect your passion and tireless dedication to the National Parks and hope that you will find continued ways to connect with and share your enthusiasm for these amazing natural and cultural resources. All the best to you.

Dear Chesley:

I think this is by far the most difficult message I have ever written. How does one say good-bye, really, to someone that means so much to so many? I am humbled by the number of years you dedicated to Eastern National and the National Park Service. You were destined for great things the minute you walked in the door. There was no question that you would make a positive difference in spite of the challenges that go along with working with a government agency. Like many of us, you saw the potential of all the good things we can do to make sure national parks are cared for and cherished for years to come. You just did it better than anyone else.

For a long time now, I have been reflecting on so many good memories of you over the years. Most of them echo with your resounding, joyous laugh that could be heard above the crowd and your all-consuming, bright smile and your ever-so-positive energy level. Hands down, you beat all of your colleagues, in that regard.

You should feel great pride in the fact that you have set the bar very high for many of us. I am forever amazed at the way you always made sure that Eastern National stepped up to the plate every single time for the National Park Service. We heard you say "yes" while most of us were still thinking through exactly what it would mean if we said "yes" and how that would really pencil out. Trust me: you left us spinning in your dust.

A couple of good memories stand out. There was a bunch of us in Los Angeles in 2003 having dinner together. Telling stories, catching up, and trying to put work aside. I have this distinct vision of Steve Medley telling a story at your end of the table and you were roaring with laughter. I unfortunately was stuck at the far end of the table, jealous that I was missing out, but found great joy in hearing and seeing you laugh and knew that just had to be a good one coming from our friend Steve. I never did hear the story but I do remember you laughing.

We loved hearing the tales about your haunted office. That was in Gatlinburg in 1998 when you told us about the many times ghosts appeared like it was the most matter-of-fact, normal thing to happen at work. It just goes to show it was not all work and no play.

You are a leader of leaders. I'd follow you anywhere, because I know it would always be in the direction of right and filled with laughter, fun, and really rewarding work on the side. You will be missed, My Friend. And you will always be remembered.

Chesley,
Thank you for all your support during my years at FOSU. You were always there to help us solve problems and improve visitor services. With your support we were able to keep and expand Eastern sales within the park and into our new departure facility in Charleston. The increased sales returned to the park an import revenue source that was so valuable during times of extremely slim Federal budgets. Many in the NPS and Eastern National will miss your professional management and friendship. May God bless you.

Chesley:

Thank you for your dedication in support of the National Park Service at large and for taking on the additional responsibility of the Employees & Alumni Association and all that it entails, the Arrowhead too!

As a Regional E&AA representative for nearly twenty years, and as Secretary/Treasurer for the "1916 Society" for a number of years, it was a sincere privilege to work with you and Eastern toward the adoption of the E&AA and the assistance that you provided towards the Society's annual meeting on, or about, Augsut 25.

I will miss your direct leadership of Eastern, your personal support of the E&AA, and most of all I will miss you in your day-to-day role. You made a home for the E&AA and have made it possible for the NPS Family to stay in touch, this in and of itself is a most significant accomplishment and is deeply appreciated by those of us who benefit. Thank you, Chesley, it's been good to work with you, to have your Friendship and support of the NPS Family-at-large.

Few will have known you as long as I have. Your dad, Chet, was one of my first bosses in Rocky Mt.NP and you were a toddler. Your mom, Carla, was always a gracious hostess to Chet's rowdy seasonals. My lone stage acting experience was when Carla directed "Annie Get Your Gun." Recall when your family came to Yosemite and stayed with us. Your family recipricated when we made our big trip to D.C.

Your legacy is secure Chesley and you will be greatly missed. Our best wishes and special thanks. Bob and Carol Barbee

Chesley,
I remember when we first met. It was 1982 and I was the Eastern Coordinator at Cumberland Gap. You came a did an audit on our oepration. Sure it was an audit, but it was much more. You gave me all kinds of advice on how to increase sales through good marketing, adding new items and other good salemanship tactics. All your ideas were spot-on. Sales went up. From that time on, I have relied on your excellent advice to make our Eastern sales area not only more profitable but also to be a cornerstone of the park's interpretive program. Last year when we had the great meeting in Atlanta, I was reminded once again how important Eastern is a partner to the NPS. Actually - partner is not a strong enough word for what Eastern means to our parks. Your leadership at EN will be sorely missed. The growth of Eastern and its importance to the preservaiton of our parks and how they are shared with our visitors can be greatly attributed to you. Wishing you all the best, Fred

Chesley,
I will never forget the first time we met almost 30 years ago. It was at the new bookstore at Boston National Historical Park. You were new. I was new. Through all those years you have keep your energy, excitement, enthusiasm and, above all, your love for the parks. No matter where I was working, Eastern National park or not, you were always there to take my call, offer help and advice and brainstorm ideas. Whether we agreed on an issue or disagreed we always had the same goal – doing great things for the parks. Thanks for everything you did and all the effort your made on all those uphill battles – regardless of the outcome they were always appreciated! Love Linda

Chesley,
So many of us are thinking of you and missing you as a great force at Eastern National and for the NPS. Your dedication has been tremendous, and I appreciate your attention and courage. Thanks for asking me to help with the strategic plan, and I will continue to support the sharing model that the founders envisioned. As I am preparing to move to Philadelphia this weekend, I am overwhelmed by the project. I can't wait to get to this city & suburbs that you have called home for so long. Change is tough - but you have shown me a good model for meeting it head on! Thank you, Chesley, for everything! With love, Cindy

Dear Chesley,

Howard and I were sorry to hear that you are leaving. You have given many years of excellent leadersihp to make Eastern National what it is today. We realize the services that EN has provided for the NPS and Blue Ridge Parkway to promote and strengthen their programs. We commend you for your hard work to make these things happen, and we want you to know that you will be missed.

We remember the fun times at the E&AA reunions. It was obvious that you and your staff handled every detail to make the events exciting and wonderful. We thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to meet with old friends and reminisce with retirees and employees. Thank you for caring to keep the Association alive, up and going.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you leave to take care of yourself and be with your family.

God Bless,

Ina

Dear Chesley:

You have been a real champion of he E&AA throughout your long and most productive tenure, and I am deeply grateful for all of your priceless
contributions to our organization. I was privileged to be a member of the
E&AA board early on and felt very privileged to be a part of it, more so
because I was around when the organization was born. I well remember how
Tiny Semingsen, the originator of the idea and its first Chairman or
President, completely devoted himself to its success. You follow in that
tradition, for your deep commitment to E&AA is reminiscent of Tiny.
I pray that you will have many, many golden days in your retirement.
God Bless. Nash

Dear Chesley, thanks for all your great service to the National Parks, visitors and our great staff.I so enjoyed working with you during my time as Director. Your caring and commitment to our parks were so clear every day we worked together. Your focus on education and interpretation helped all of us do better even in our times of leaner dollars. You always worried about all the parks-big and small.

Your creative thinking was so much fun for all of us to witness. Your Ranger cards is one example. You were always ready to help assist with an event, or reach out thru the Employees Association to help employees needing help such as after Katrina. Chesley you are a caring professional who will be missed as President. Know you have made a difference and will always be in our prayers and thoughts. Congratulations on your retirement and a job well done. Please stay in touch. Fran

You have personified Eastern to me ever since I came on the board, and, from my perspective, you made what I know to be a difficult and complex job look easy. Hi Chesley,

We've known each other since the 1980s when I started attending board meetings with Bob. In those early days you spoiled the board with your phenomenal attention to detail, thoughtful touches, and creative publications. Later, when you became President, I worked more closely with you as a board member and chair. You ran a tight ship, everyone knew your expectations, and the organization grew considerably. Your illness shocked us all. Yet again, you impressed everyone with your ability to withstand the horrors of chemotherapy and still continue your exhausting schedule and focus on performance and detail. You are amazing. Thus, we are saddened by the news that you are having to step down. May you and your family have time to continue to share the joys of life and love.

Dear Chesley: Wow, what a tribute! I read through just a few of the many notes sent by people and parks you have had a positive influence on throughout your years. I remember our talk about the first Eastern outlet opening at Abe Lincoln while my grandfather John M. Cissell was there in 1948. You, and the great partner of the parks, have come a long way since then! Your willingness to help all parks and not just your outlet parks has been an inspiration to many. Congratulations on a great career and thank you for all you have done to support the National Park Service over the years. You will be missed by all. Stay well and safe. John

After I retired and moved to the Outer Banks several years ago, I began working at the Fort Raleigh NHS bookstore and have thoroughly enjoyed my association with EN since that time! Chesley: I want to add my fond memories and appreciation for all our years of constructive and personally enjoyable relationship. That spans nearly 30 years, as I was on the board from 1978 to 1997 and then kept traveling to board meetings with Melody as a spouse until 2006. What I recall in particular is how attentive you were to my hearing problems and the accommodations you made, personal and institutional, to see that I understood all I could of what was transpiring. I also remember how thoughtful you were in meeting my desires, even though not always your responsibility. We have shared many years of wonderful experience, and I want you to step down with the knowledge of my enduring gratitude. Bob

My career has always been intertwined with and enriched by your own. We ran many parallel paths over the years including mothering our beloved only daughters as we tried to handle our jobs that grew more demanding as our girls grew. I remember countless times spent together with you and many many conversations and so much laughter too. I am sad you are having to step down from Eastern National as you fight this huge health battle. Eastern National and the National Park Service are not the same without you. You leave a legacy that will always remain untouched but that will inspire many generations to come. Thank you for your selfless dedication to the NPS Mission, the Eastern National Mission and the employees of both organizations. With much love, tears and hugs,Joan Anzelmo

Dear Chesley,
I was disappointed to learn that you are leaving Eastern National. You have been a remarkable administrator and a cherished friend of all the parks. As you leave EN, you can do so knowing that the work you have done on behalf of the National Park Service will endure. All of us in this "business" know that what we do is for the many millions of today's visitors, but more importantly, it is to preserve what we all cherish for future generations. You can take pride in knowing that the educational work of Eastern National will help ensure that our national heritage will be around for all the generations to come. Congratulations! At the same time, we are disheartened to learn that your leaving is for health reasons. Pat and I wish you all the best for a healthier and most enjoyable retirement.

Dear Chesley,
Sometimes the unexpected is the most memorable...
A few years ago you breezed into our New England regional office,
saw us struggling with inventory deadlines, and took over our busy phones
while we finished. One of your staff members called and kept insisting
on speaking to you, her boss, not believing that you would be manning our
phones--and speaking with her already! Thanks for pitching in.
A few years later when my flight to the Richmond meeting got me to our
hotel too early, I was happy to be asked to join your travelling group
at lunch. I enjoyed the talk about kids and pets and work, of course.

Someone has mentioned, and I too have appreciated your
personally-signed letters to us in the field. I have long admired
your confidence, energy, and sparkle, as I now admire your courage
in your illness. Thanks for all you've done to make Eastern a meaningful place to work. We will miss you!

During my time at Eastern National, I truely felt part of the family. That is exactly what Eastern National was to me. I felt welcomed even during my interview.

While there, we probably completed 2 of the biggest changes to Eastern up to that point. We launched eParks and then made it completely integrated with the inventory system. While I didnt know a lot of the inventory during that time, you always showed faith in me, while we were working on it.

Whether it was when I got married or when Kaylee was being born, you were always supportive of me. I always felt like part of the family. It is always disappointing that when I stop in the office from time to time, I always seem to miss you.

You have been a great mentor and friend, and I will always appreciate that.

In reading the messages to you by your friends throughout EN and the NPS, the high regard with which you are held is very apparent. And no wonder: Your years of directing EN were marked by innovative management that made it the flagship of all of the NPS's cooperative associations. I always appreciated your openness and willingness to engage in dialog with park managers about their operations. You are leaving EN in sound financial shape and in position to remain an important partner to the NPS for years to come. Your leadership will be missed, both at EN and within the NPS itself. Dear Chesley,

This is not just another occasion, but rather a very special event, and a sad one - your departure from Eastern National after many, many years of loyalty and dedication to Eastern National and also the National Park Service! You have been a tremendous asset to Eastern National and a very important Partner to the National Park Service. I especially enjoyed getting to know you better and working with you as the Midwest Region’s Superintendents’ representative on the Advisory Board. Each occasion that we met, as well as the many years of support and assistance you and Eastern National provided to our Superintendents’ Conferences, have all been very well done and are especially appreciated. From my very first contact with you, you have been exemplary, professional, and extremely helpful and an inspiration to us all. You will be missed not only by Eastern National, but also by your friends throughout the National Park Service!

Chesley, I so admire your perseverance and positive outlook despite the serious health situations you endure. You are a true inspiration!

I personally, along with many others, hope and pray that you are comforted in knowing that "You have made a Difference." That, if nothing else, is all anyone can ask in a "lifetime" of dedication to the Eastern National and the National Park Service.

Hi Chesley:

I just want to add to the flood of well wishes that I know you have received for all that you have accomplished in support of parks and their visitors. You always have represented Eastern National at the very highest standards of collaboration and partnership to fulfill the joint mission of the National Park Service and Eastern National. As I frequently remind my colleagues, it is all about service to the public and enhancing quality visitor experiences. Income revenue must remain secondary in our thinking. I always have been grateful for your kindness and professionalism in helping us establish an outstanding Eastern National sales outlet at Harry S Truman NHS. The fine work by the Eastern National staff would not have taken place or enjoyed so much success without your steady hand of guidance and your daily example of professional excellence.

Thanks so much,

Chesley, it has always been great to know that you are somewhere out there fighting for the National Park Service through Eastern National.   A little over 20 years ago I was made manager of America's National Parks at Union Station here in St. Louis. It was a partnership between JNEHA and ENPMA (the names at the time). Not long after starting at ANP you invited me to attend your annual site managers meeting in Philadelphia. I finally got to meet you in person and I remember how impressed I was by your knowledge, self-confidence and your commitment to Eastern National. Hi Chesley,
Remember the time you, Betsie and I were visiting Adams, and I made you get out of the car in the middle of a huge snow pile? And how about the time you were auditing Cape Cod, then came here to the Regional Office to meet with us? But we were so busy that you spent an hour answering the phone for us... sure did surprise a few callers! And when we were training the Washington coordinators, the five of us were jammed in 2 seats in the van because the back was filled with luggage and A/V equipment. Then we couldn't figure out how to close the van windows that night and someone was going to have to sleep in the van to guard the stuff (as I recall, you opted out...)
Paul remembers meetings in Orlando and New Orleans (he and other spouses took full advantage of the New Orleans trip, visiting the whole town...places that possibly no longer exist!)And then the Poconos...a place of winter sports and games, but there was only mud, no snow! And he remembers playing Pictionary, and being badly beaten. I wonder who was on the other team?!
You always inspired and encouraged each of us to do our personal best, and I thank you.

Chesley, I manage the site here at Saratoga and am the second person on the left in front row of the group photo shot of the Philadelphia meeting wearing the orange shirt and brown blazer. This year I will complete 10 years of service within the Eastern National family and have enjoyed each year. It is a great company of which to be part of and certainly it has been because you were at the helm....looking out for each and every one of us. I appreciate all your years of dedication to the partnership concept and the utimate goal of providing a lasting experience for our visitors. Bless you in your next journey into retirement and shared experiences with family and friends.

Chesley, When I began working for Eastern National in 1978, I felt like the luckiest person in the world! To be able to work in our nation's awesome National Parks is indeed a privilege. And to have your leadership guiding us through such an astounding period of growth has been an honor. I appreciate all you have done. I will miss you.

Chesley, Just to let you know you will be missed so very much. It has been such a joy and pleasure to have known you all these years. It was just this past year you helped me so much here at Abraham Lincoln Birthplace NHS. You always made me proud to be a part of Eastern National team. Did your Dad like the shirt you bought him from here? Anyways, I wish only the best in your life. Peace and THANK YOU Ava Nell Ray

Hi Chesley-
In my 30 years with the NPS you and EN have always been a part of it. From my days at Federal Hall and Castle Clinton to Lincoln Home I will always remember working with EN and you at the helm. You led the way for EN in so many ways, was always optimistic even when it was difficult to be, and were always there to offer help when we needed it. Best wishes to you in retirement and we'll all miss you very much.

Chesley,

In all our years together as cooperating association execs, I’ve never found anyone to match your commitment to parks and the organizations that support them. I remember when we first became colleagues in 1991. You were working for George and I was working for Ray and sometimes together we had to keep pace with their latest new-fangled idea. Later we both moved up at our respective organizations and had the opportunity to innovate on our own. Now, looking forward I must confess that it will seem very strange to not have you as a professional colleague after so many years. Still, it will always be good to keep you as a friend.

Years ago, I remember spending some down time with you and the EN staff at an ABA convention in Los Angeles. As the small mob wrestled over the ever important “where to eat?” question, you walked up, made a decision, and everyone happily followed behind. One of your staff just smiled and said “She’ll naturally lead in any situation!” It was clear that they would follow you anywhere.

As I think about your career, two statements come to mind. The first is by someone who rightly defined the main characteristics of effective leadership as “intelligence, integrity or loyalty, mystique, humor, discipline, courage, self-sufficiency and confidence.” All fit you to a T. The other statement is just as appropriate. “Blessed is the leader who seeks the best for those he serves.” Those that know you best have testified that this is true.

Be blessed,
David

The fact that everyone is thanking you for your support shows just
how supportive you've been - I have always been amazed at how you
made me feel special - in the past I would receive a form letter
from the president of the company I worked for (if I was lucky!)-
but when I noticed your letters were specifically to me I was stunned!
You will be sorely missed by all.
Wishing you a peaceful retirement.

Chesley:

Thank you for your generous support of park operations and the dedication of the new Grand Portage Heritage Center through EN. Through EN support we were able to provide a dedication ceremony that was warm and thoughtful in character. Tribal representatives are still remarking about it. We have also enjoyed the continuous concern of EN staff in providing appropriate sales items to our visitors. Thank you for your dedication to assisting parks and providing a strong presence to EN operations and character.

Chesley,

Many many thanks to you for your support of the parks over the years. I appreciate the extra effort you were always willing to make on behalf of the smaller parks. Your support of our heritage center grand opeing ceremonies here at Grand Portage is especially appreciated and the success of that speical day was, in large part, due to your assistance. Wish you could have been here! When you walk out the door today, you leave a legacy of exceptional service to our national parks.....most of us can only hope to say that! Thank you, Chesley!

Hi Chesley, I appreciated the personal connection you made directly with our site, and I am sure so many other sites as well. It seems so many folks nowadays can't seem to see the educational forest through the cooperating trees; thanks so much for keeping such a focus on that mission...

Chesley,

Thanks for all of the support over the years. I have come to you with issues involving the parks many times, and I could always coount on a supportive ear and a carefully presented dose of reality. Taking your advice has always been the right course. Your support in the effort to include the NCR parks in Eastern was timely, much needed, and greatly appreciated. Millions of visitors at C&O Canal and Natchez better understand the meanings of the park because of your efforts. There will be no end to the good you have done. Enjoy the peach cobbler!

Dear Chesley,

It has been my pleasure to work with you and Eastern National over the years. I can't remember when we first met, but I always enjoyed talking to you at NAI, APPL, or when you came to audit our operation at Apostle Islands. You've done an outstanding job, and I'll always think of you as a big part of Eastern National. You have my sincerest best wishes as you face the challenges that lie ahead. Your steady hand at Eastern National will be missed.

Thanks so much for all the support you have shown me over the past 3 years as I.T. Manager. I could not have accomplished as much as I have been able to so far without your support and understanding.

Dear Chesley --

The first time we met, I asked, "Why have you stayed at Eastern National for such a long time?". (Since 1980!) You replied, quickly and enthusiastically "The People! We have the greatest people - they're committed to our mission of providing quality educational products to our park partners. I LOVE working at Eastern National!".

So I considered myself was lucky when you hired me as your Human Resources Manager.

Everything you told me that day in April 1996 is true. I've never worked with anyone more dedicated to the people with whom they work, nor with more of a sense of mission than you have.

As you prepare to leave Eastern National, take with you the certainty that you've positively impacted the people at Eastern National, the National Park Service and our other partners - along with the millions of visitors whose lives have been improved by your personal efforts - whether as institutionally far reaching as the "Passport to Your National Parks" program, or simply your remembering someone's birthday.

Working for you, I've been able to keep the "Human" in Human Resources, and for that I'm grateful. I've learned a lot from you during our time together. Best wishes -- to my colleague, my boss, and my friend.
