Finally, ETHS at 75% funded. Not great, but not bad.

Same report shows the township with a pension surplus. Is there a pensionable position within the township, or not?

Hmmm... Line item 334: D65 is 84% funded. Much better than I would have supposed.

Maria Pappas, the Cook County Treasurer, had released a report back in May pertaining to the Debt Disclosure Ordinance.

You can view and download the pdf here: http://cookcountytreasurer.com/pdfs/ddo/debtreport05022012.pdf.

Jump to page 25, line item #44, and draw your own conclusions.

I think to project the reputation and performance of the establishment you mentiioned on others is not reasonable. World of Beers has now agreed to have a kitchen and serve food. World of Beers has an excellent reputation.

BTW there is no issue before us re bars. However, if the Mayor determines we should consider such a license I will study it carefully.

After reading an article in the Trib/Local section today I felt I should express my position. I am against the idea of "tavern licenses" in Evanston. I wish you would reconsider your position. In reality, all The Keg was, was a tavern and we just managed to finally close it. With the number of problems it generated, what kind of an effect would taverns/saloons generate for public safety and how many more police calls would they create?

Here are a few more sites with information about why voting NO on the D65 referendum is a good choice:

As many of you know, District 65 is putting a $48 million referendum on the ballot for the March 20th primary. I've found the paper's coverage of the issues unbalanced, and while I image existing schools need updating, I have concerns that we need a new school, too. Whether you support a 19th elementary school being built in the 5 ward or not, the below website brings up some brief but very interesting points that we should all know about. Know the facts on both sides of the issue and vote.

Ann, you've got the facts to support your argument that the headlines in Evanston Now highlight Howard Street as a crime hub. Hard for anyone to claim otherwise.

Now that it has been pointed out to Evanston Now, that media outlet needs to change its damaging practice of presenting Headline: Howard Street Crime Hub.

If there is no change, perhaps a boycott of Evanston Now would be appropriate. Those petitions on change.org work very well to place pressure on all types of businesses.

other streets are rarely mentioned in crime headline stories on Evanston Now. I have no problem with all streets being mentioned. Curious why only Howard is noted.

Mike - That 'tax stamp' that you reference got passed at least a year ago, about the time that they rolled out the new, larger recycling bins. I too thought it was crazy that we have to buy the bags and now had to pay additionally to get each bag picked up...overall about $2/bag. I decided I'd be better off just purchasing the yard waste cart; even with the annual pickup fee, we figure over a few years we come out better. Here's the link to the info: http://www.cityofevanston.org/recycling-waste/yard-waste/

Is anyone surprised by this tax stampt that is now required on all garden/yard waste? The almost-2-dollars-a-bag tax stamp that one apparently buys at a Jewel or Dominicks, to put on your paper leaf/garden bag so it will get picked up? I get the Evanston e-mail newsletter, read my Evanston City mail delivered to me, and somehow, this neat little added tax just slipped right by me. I would much rather pay an added tax on my garbage, since this is of no value and only wastes land for the land fill. I am upset about this and quite angered at the city for levying this additional tax on top of my already quite high-enough property taxes.

Dan,

There are not enough rich people to make up for the hole our government has put us in. The entire income of the top 1% or even 10% will not make up the hole.

The government may create jobs for their employees, but the real jobs that create growth and wealth come from innovation. I do not consider variable tax rates an innovation and job creator.

it is not the complexity of determining what you have to pay, it is the loopholes that complexity creates.

Vito:

A progressive tax rate is no more complicated than a flat tax rate. What is complicated is determining ones taxable income. This is where the politicians and special interests can put in all the loopholes. I agree with you that the calculation of taxable income should be straight forward and without a lot of complications. Once the taxable income is calculated the tax you pay is determined simply by looking it up in a table. What is complicated about that?

A progressive tax puts more of the burden of taxation on the wealthy and less on the middle class. Or are you opposed to this?

Dan,

Two reasons:

1. historical data shows that tax revenue as % GDP is fairly constant irrespective of tax rates
2. politicians being whores will sell out to anyone trying to take advantage of a complicated varied tax rate

Dan,

With 70,000+ pages, where do you start?

A flat tax, predictable with no loopholes. Subsidies for many things and industries should go. Ethanol is an example. There are few "small" farms. AMD does need subsidies. No wage cap on Medicare or SS taxes.

That would be a start.

I am not really acquanted with the tax code so I can't really comment on what should be changed. What do you think should be changed? How much money would it save and what would it impact?

Dan,

How about cutting spending by revising the 70,000+ pages of the tax code?

Past data has shown that irrespective of the tax rate, the tax revenue as % of GDP is 19%

That indicates they are wealthy enough to hire sharp tax accountants, lawyers and lobbyists.

There are plenty of areas to cut: agricultural subsidies, green technologies (the Dutch have given up), duplicative agencies, etc.

Vito:

I am in general agreement with the points that your friend made. However I do not see how this bears on the discussion we have been having on taxes. Currently the Federal Government has a huge deficit and huge expenditures. Naturally we all want to bring the expenditures down and the deficit under control.

Unfortunately, I don't how it is possible to reduce the deficit without a tax increase. Therefore it seems reasonable, given the current situation, to raise taxes on those who are wealthy because they can afford it.

Dan,

As far as helping others, one of my friends, a self made millionaire, (BTW an engineer from Chicago's south side)sent me this:

1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work, because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation....
