We have just got back from our visit to see the tour to see the news about David we had a message from Ian & Gill that there had been a fatal accident
involving a cyclist back home but not many details

Our sympathy goes out to Davids family and all those involved in this tragic loss

I would just like everyone who was out on the club run on Sunday (3rd Aug) to know that I didn't have my bubble bath in the afternoon - I ended up working with Jamie instead - so much for my afternoon of relaxing....

Hi all,

I am a PhD student in exercise physiology at the University of Exeter based at the St Luke's Campus. I am in the process of testing for one of my PhD studies and I am looking to recruit subjects to participate in the study. I would be most grateful if you could read this as I hope that it would be of interest to some of you.

WHAT DOES THE STUDY INVOLVE?

The study will comprise a total of 7 visits to the laboratory at the St Luke's Campus to perform exercise tests on the bike. After an initial ramp exercise test, from which I can determine VO2max, Gas Exchange Threshold (this is simply a non invasive method to establish the lactate threshold), the remaining six tests will involve step tests where the workload is abruptly increased from a baseline value to either a moderate workload or a high-intensity workload. Three of these tests will occur following a 3 day period of dietary nitrate supplementation, with the remaining three occurring following placebo. These 3 test will be performed on successive days. On two occasions (one for each experimental condition) you will be required to hold the high-intensity workload until exhaustion. We will also we taking both fingertip and venous blood samples for the determination of blood lactate and blood nitrite, respectively.

WHY INVESTIGATE NITRATE SUPPLEMENTATION?

Supplementation with dietary nitrate has been shown to promote blood vessel dilation and to increase blood flow to the working muscles. This, of course, has the potential to increase the volume of oxygen delivered to the muscle and therefore to improve exercise performance.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

There are no side effects associated with dietary nitrate supplementation

WHAT WILL I GET FROM TAKING PART IN THIS TESTING?

From the initial ramp test I will provide you with your VO2max, Gas-Exchange Threshold ( same as Lactate Threshold) and the Heart Rate at which these physiological boundaries occur, which will be of use when your are setting exercise intensities for your training. Also if your performance is improves following dietary nitrate supplementation I will provide you with a list of foods high in nitrates, which you may then wish to incorporate into your diet.

If you have any questions regarding the testing or you would like to participate in this study please contact me on either:

Emily did a great ride on Sunday when she completed the Cheddar challenge -she writes - Yesterday, I completed the 100 mile cheddar challenge, it was awesome, the day was crisp, cold, but as the sun came up, soon warmed up and it was a perfect day. I was kn*ckered when we finished, I rode it with one of our friends called Ben and had a brilliant time. Even though the last 40 miles were ALL up hill, there was some stunning scenary to look at. (AND SHE COULD LOOK AT IT)!

Ben and I rode the course in 5 hours 51 mins - gold medal time! I was really chuffed and it has inspired me to race next year. Because the first half of the course was relatively flat, with a few nasty steep, but short climbs, we were riding in a pelton of about 40 riders. Everyone was moving about, doing their turns on the front, (which I did also) and we were ripping along.

Dont forget the Tarka Family ride on October 19th AND Simon Hill asks us to remember winter doesnt mean the racing stops - the cyclo cross SW League is in full swing - Simon competing - and is getting fields on 50+ which is great news DEtails of SW LEague can be found on the web - www.cyclo-cross.org.uk
