Hi all,

I am a PhD student in exercise physiology at the University of Exeter based at the St Luke's Campus. I am in the process of testing for one of my PhD studies and I am looking to recruit subjects to participate in the study. I would be most grateful if you could read this as I hope that it would be of interest to some of you.

WHAT DOES THE STUDY INVOLVE?

The study will comprise a total of 7 visits to the laboratory at the St Luke's Campus to perform exercise tests on the bike. After an initial ramp exercise test, from which I can determine VO2max, Gas Exchange Threshold (this is simply a non invasive method to establish the lactate threshold), the remaining six tests will involve step tests where the workload is abruptly increased from a baseline value to either a moderate workload or a high-intensity workload. Three of these tests will occur following a 3 day period of dietary nitrate supplementation, with the remaining three occurring following placebo. These 3 test will be performed on successive days. On two occasions (one for each experimental condition) you will be required to hold the high-intensity workload until exhaustion. We will also we taking both fingertip and venous blood samples for the determination of blood lactate and blood nitrite, respectively.

WHY INVESTIGATE NITRATE SUPPLEMENTATION?

Supplementation with dietary nitrate has been shown to promote blood vessel dilation and to increase blood flow to the working muscles. This, of course, has the potential to increase the volume of oxygen delivered to the muscle and therefore to improve exercise performance.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

There are no side effects associated with dietary nitrate supplementation

WHAT WILL I GET FROM TAKING PART IN THIS TESTING?

From the initial ramp test I will provide you with your VO2max, Gas-Exchange Threshold ( same as Lactate Threshold) and the Heart Rate at which these physiological boundaries occur, which will be of use when your are setting exercise intensities for your training. Also if your performance is improves following dietary nitrate supplementation I will provide you with a list of foods high in nitrates, which you may then wish to incorporate into your diet.

If you have any questions regarding the testing or you would like to participate in this study please contact me on either:

I would just like everyone who was out on the club run on Sunday (3rd Aug) to know that I didn't have my bubble bath in the afternoon - I ended up working with Jamie instead - so much for my afternoon of relaxing....

thanks to everybody who turned up to help out at the time trial tonight, even though it was almost certainly going to be cancelled.
Thanks too, to Pete Luxton for organising a replacement time keeper when his hospital appointment came through on the wrong night and it was the last thing that anybody else would have thought about. I didn't know anyhing about this - everybody just turns up. See you all next wek, hopefully in the sun shine.

I rode my first 25 last Thursday on the S4 along with Sue & Andy. It couldn't have been a worse night but I really enjoyed it. I won,t say my time as it wasn,t that good but I did average 18 miles an hour ( Thats 30 on the way out and 6 on the way back) Im not sure of Andy's time but I think Sue did 1hr 12. Sue & I came away with 1st & 2nd lady which wasn't hard as we were the only ones. I would love to do more 25's but I wish they had them in the evenings not early on Sundays, Im not good first thing in the morning!

Hi All
A reminder to everyone that the Somerset Road Club 'Open 10' is taking place on Saturday 26th April 2008 at 1430hrs on the U21/10. For those of you unfamiliar with the course, it is virtually pan flat, out & back with some longish straights on a pretty good surface. The only 'climb' is over the Motorway overbridge !.The course runs on the A38 between Cross & East Brent and the HQ is about 15 mins from junction 22 of the M5. £100 first prize is guaranteed with lots of other awards.
Hope to see you there !
Cheers

Indeed there is

Evening 10's folks - SV and EW are invited to join debate
Do we want to continue in present format
Can we? in view of road works etc
Would non standard distances allow us to find suitable courses?

Where will we hold them - who will ride them
remember someone has to organise, time etc - so dont give suggestions that are impossible to organise

Over to you folks
