Hi Margretta -

Yes, you'll need your lab manual and lab coat, but you'll also need your lab goggles as the experiment requires handling a couple of chemicals.

Hi Katie -

Because of Labour Day we treat Monday as the last day of the lab week so you're not behind. On the syllabus you'll see how it's organized in an attempt to avoid any confusion.

The syllabus is here -

Professor Norris,

When I went to the bookstore to buy my lab manual, they told me that they weren't getting them in until September 14 and that the instructors knew about it or something so I dont have one right now. I was planning on just going on teh 14th and getting one. Are they in now? I have lab tomorrow (9-6-07) at 8AM so I guess I can try to stop at the bookstore before class. Will I not be able to do the experiment without it?

Hi Kristin -

The books came in last week so you should be able to get one today. I'll give a few copies of the first lab to the 8 am TAs just in case and this lab is very straightforward so you'll be able to read the instructions and complete the lab this morning without any worries.

Let your TA know if you are unable to buy the manual this morning.

Dr. Norris,

I am trying to email my lab TA because I missed lab this afternoon due to the fact I commute and my car broke down on my way to class this morning and I had to have it towed to the shop. The only problem is that I do not have her email address. It is Lean Rozzi; do you know how I can contact her? Thank you!

Hi Mark - I'm glad you find this useful. Please feel free to ask questions about lab on here and pass on to your friends that this is an easy and convenient way to get information about upcoming labs.

I am having a hard time with the labs, especially "Combining Properties of Nickel and Dimethylglyoxime." I am in the Monday lab, and Calvin has been great about answering my questions, but I get pretty frustrated when the equipment doesn't work right and I run out of time, as I have a 3 hour class right after lab. Sometimes I am late for it, and last week missed a quiz in my 5:00 PM class because the chem lab ran over (due to faulty equipment). This past week when I was trying to do the graphs, I had a lot of difficulty. I'm afraid that I don't understand the workbook, either.

I worked in a lab in Washington for the past 10 years (and did quite well) and got "A's" in CHEM 1501 this past spring, so I know that I'm not an idiot. I don't know what it is that I don't understand, so I am finding it difficult to ask the right questions to find out what I don't know.

Debra - which equipment is faulty?

This is very different to 1501 and doing well in lab requires being prepared and budgeting your time well once in class. We have tried to supplement the manual as much as possible by posting web pages related to each experiment - these are accessible during lab and seem, from the overall feedback we've had, to be popular and helpful.

We've also been through and done each experiment ourselves to see where things go wrong and, for example with the Ni/DMG experiment, it seems to work quite well and is certainly manageable in the 3 hour time period. The instructions for plotting the graph were quite straightforward also. If you have problems you might visit the TA office hours that are available (link below) and ask some questions. Most of those TAs are involved in 1515L and will be able to help.

We are in Kats 11am Tuesday lab and were reviewing the slide show before starting our Percentage of Compounds slideshow. And she wanted us to bring to your attention that there are "students" in the lab photos not wearing lab jackets.
