Debi, the website is really coming along nicely. I, too, hope it will be a success, and I think it will once it becomes known that we have one. What is the beautiful amber covered dish that you used at the top of this page? I should know, but I don't recognize it.

Hi Sharon,
That is Fostoria CROWN that I absolutely fell in love with while thumbing through a Depression Glass book. Turns out it also comes in cobalt, so off to eBay I went to search and I found an auction and won one. Should get it any day now. I never bought any Depression Glass on purpose before except my Hazel Atlas CRISS CROSS, so I guess now I am a Depression Glass collector too. See what you made me do?

What a beautiful site!!! Even though it is not finished, the pictures and information are wonderful. I live too far away to join your club and attend meetings so I will be a frequent visitor here. I will be sharing the link with others.

Hi Sue,
Thank you very much for the compliment. As you noticed, we are just getting started and still have many past pictures to post to website pages. The club members do not even know about the site yet. We expect a lot more traffic and chatter after the next club meeting on Nov. 27 when the membership will be informed. This message board is open to anyone interested in glass, not just club members, so I do hope you will visit often and tell your friends too. Just out of curiousity, how do you find the website since it's so new? Never hurts to check out where we show up and what we can do to increase that traffic.

Great website. I learned about it from a woman at the antique store in Romeo last Saturday. I am looking forward to watching it develop. My interest is in depression glass - cake plates, champagne and shot glasses. Pink and green. I have also acquired several pieces of Heisey. Is there anywhere to get pieces appraised or identified?
Thanks-Mary

Hi Mary,
This discussion area is just getting started but pretty soon there will be hoards of people who know all about glass patterns and glass companies. The club will meet on the 27th and it's members will learn of the new website (still under construction) and this great chat area. The club has many members who know an awful lot about glass so I think with a good picture posted here, someone should be able to identify it. If you can post a picture, please do so and we'll start getting the people to subscribe here.

I have 2 pieces of glass that if anybody could identify it would be appreciated. The first is a dark amber coloured candlestick holder (mistakenly bought as an open salt) It measures 3 1/4 inches handle to handle and stands 2 1/4 inches high. The stem is hollow.
The second piece is 83/4 inches long, 3 inches from top to bottom and bowl depth of 2 inches. The closest I come to anything like it is Indiana Glass Co. Constellation pattern but that is only a wild wild guess.

To Rae B. Regarding the clear piece -- it would help to know if the inside bottom is rayed? or does it have another pattern in the bottom? A picture of the inside would help.

Hi Rae, I have that exact amber piece in cobalt blue and you're correct that it would not make a very good salt with the stem being hollow. It would make a better candle holder. Mine has raised letters on the bottom "Made in Taiwan." They are backwards and you'd have to hold it to a mirror to read it correctly. On the clear glass piece, it has the same lines as a couple Fostoria patterns have. Look at the open salts on this webpage http://members.aol.com/opensaltsinfo1/Refe...toria/Fostoria.html. Their pattern numbers 1515 LUCERE and 2000 REGAL both resemble your dish. Since we know Fostoria molds were sold to other companies when they went out of business, you'd probably need a real Fostoria collector to tell you if that's what it is. Hopefully, we will have a lot more people checking in here in a couple more weeks that could offer better answers. Debi

Thanks Debi - it does have a strong resemblence to the Regal pattern I think. I checked my candle stick but there is no writing on it that I can see - it works well with toothpicks stuck in the hollow part too!!
Sharon - I've taken another photo looking down but its not very clear. There is a a rayed (about 12 rays) or petals on the outside of the dish. The inside bowl is quite smooth but on the outside the petals/rays can be felt and are raised.
Thank you both

Well, I did SOMETHING wrong. I wrote a message and then posted a picture of the piece in question. The picture appeared, but my message didn't. I must have missed something!
My question is: I bought this pretty 6" New Martinsville "Radiance" comport the other night at the meeting, but don't recognize the etch pattern. Does anyone recognize it? Thanks for any help you can give, before I go crazy looking in every book for it. Sharon

If your intention is to post a picture, you have to click on the UPLOAD button first. Then you'll get a screen to select the picture from your computer and you can type in up to an 80 character caption with the picture. Long messages have to be posted either before or after you upload the picture. They won't be in the same message.
The flowers remind me of Violas or Violets...or maybe something in the Pansy family. Maybe someplace to start looking for a name, but you know me Sharon...I don't know patterns. Maybe someone else here can help you.

Debi, thanks for the instructions on how to post a picture AND write a message. I guess I didn't do anything wrong; I just didn't know that if the message was long, it had to be separate. Now I know!
I found the pattern name of the etching on my New Martinsville piece. I started looking for New Martinsville patterns in Gene Florence's Pattern ID book, and found WILD ROSE, Etch #30, Blank #42. There must not have been much of it, because it's not in either of my Elegant Glass books. the Radiance blank is, but not the Wild Rose etch. Well, I learned something today. Now if I can remember it when I see it again, I'll have accomplished something.

Rae, There is an open salt auction that just ended and the resemblance to your dish is very strong. Have you checked very carefully for marks? Is there any raised lettering you might not see but can feel? Krystol has a history with Ohio Flint Glass, Jefferson Glass and later, Central Glass companies. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...1&item=150179855163Debi

It's a java script that I copied and used years ago but it may not work on old computers if some sort of java program isn't loaded. I don't know exactly what would need to be done - but I think it's a simple fix. I will see if I can find out and let you know.

I know there are several Fenton collectors in our glass club and just wanted to let everyone know that in an upcoming Green Valley Auction there will be items from the private collection of Frank M. Fenton. Details are on this page: http://www.greenvalleyauctions.com/Auction...008January2527.html (I'm waiting for the open salt collection to be cataloged and posted.) Too bad more people are not registered for this page. They would find out today instead of next Tuesday at the meeting, if I even remember to mention it. Someone who reads this...remind me...or bring it up yourself at the meeting. Debi

As we talked about at the meetin... Heacock's Book on Ruby Stain Glass can be downloaded or viewed from the Web site of the Ruby Stain Glass Museum. They indicate that they own the copyright and the book is being made available for reference only. Also they indicate they are in the process of having it revised. What a wonderful thing to do until a new print of the book becomes available. The link is shown below: http://www.rubystain.com/book7.html

On our open salt chat page, a lady named Amy asked if we knew what the salt dip for the McKee ROCK CRYSTAL pattern looked like. We have an example in our salt book - at least I think it's the same pattern - that I will post shortly. I own one of these salts and was hoping someone could bring a piece of ROCK CRYSTAL pattern to our Feruary 26 meeting for comparison. My piece is clear with gold trim.
Also, I have a question regarding this pattern. The Florence Depression Glass book states it was a McKee pattern in the 1920s and 30s. In an old pattern glass book it says McKee made this as far back as 1894 and into the 1940s because it was so popular. That's quite a difference in manufacturing times and I was wondering if anyone had better information.

Debi, I have one Rock Crystal Sherbet I can bring to the meeting. In the Mauzy's Depression Glass book, the dates they give for this pattern are 1922-1931. I also notice they call it Rock Crystal Flower. My pressed glass book says 1894 and calls it Rock Crystal. Joanne Aldrich collects Rock Crystal and may see this discussion and have more information.

Sharon,
Amy told me that she thinks my salt is called the PURITAN pattern by McKee. They are very similar to each other. That's got to be frustrating to collectors to have the same company manufacture such similar patterns at the same time. I wonder why they did that?!?
Maybe Joanne can shed a little light on the subject. I would still like to see and compare so please do take your piece to the next meeting.

The two patterns are very similar. They both have five petals on the flowers. The difference is that the Puritan pattern has lines on the petals. It is also more ornate with the other scrolling that is in the pattern. On the tumblers the design is different on the bottom. The Rock Crystal pattern usually has a base that is octagon shaped where the Purtian is usually round. I will try to get pictures of both patterns so you can see the difference. Yes, I have made the mistake of buying the Purtian pattern on eBay when the picture wasn't very good. I don't know of any salt dip that was made in the Rock Crystal pattern. See you all soon.

Joanne,
I posted the picture of the open salts on that chat page but will also do so here for you to see too. I have this in clear also, but I don't think it's the ROCK CRYSTAL pattern salt dip because of the glass colors and because it's 6-sided instead of 8-sided. Despite the very early beginning of this pattern, I can't find it mentioned in any EAPG books except that one by Revi, and then the Gene Florence depression glass pattern book.

I think we may have come to the wrong conclusion in our "What's it?" at the last meeting regarding the small dish with the spider web botton. They were told that it was probably not Heisey. I don't remember who brought in the dish but if they see this they may want to bring it in again to compare with the pictures and what I found. I was getting some dishes out for a party when I happened upon one of my Heisey Crystolite dishes that has the spider web bottom and similar shape. I was pretty sure it was genuine Heisey since I bought it as part of a set from a dealer that is pretty knowledgeable. I did a little more searching online (Google Heisey Crystolite Spider) and got several hits including a previous auction item by Appletree Auctions of Newark, Ohio. They are experts in Heisey Glass and their ID's can usually be relied upon. I also found the tri-sided dish for sale online at http://www.rubylane.com/shops/dottiesglass/item/1079Crystolite uses a number of different handles but the cream and sugar use the same handles as this dish and it is fairly easy to find a picture online for comparison.

Here's a bit more on the question about the McKee Rock Crystal Salt Dip. The picture shown in message 47 is identified in the Heacock Book 5000 Open Salts, photo #152 (p.32 & 107) as TWO FLOWER pattern by U.S. Glass, circa 1915.
I can't find a photo of the Rock Crystal salt dip. Based on other Rock Crystal items I would guess that it has an octagon shaped base like the footed sugar and similar handles and scallop top. A picture of the sugar can be found in some of the older Florence Depression Enclopedias (my ninth edition) or online at Replacements.com.
Another good source would probably be "The Complete Book of McKee Glass" by Sandra McPhee Stout. I don't have it but maybe our library or another member might.

Dorothy,
We had a bit more discussion about the ROCK CRYSTAL pattern salts on the open salt chat page than here. We knew it was pictured in H&J 152, but no other pattern glass book mentions any TWO FLOWER pattern that I could find. I recently bought several used pattern glass books on the Amazon website. That must be a rather obscure alias for another pattern but I don't know what. Could it be that PURITAN pattern?
It would be nice if someone had that McKee book by Stout would bring it to the meeting. Maybe there is some additional information in there.

The "Two Flower" pattern is also shown in Heacock's Enclopedia of Victorian Colored Pattern Glass, Book 5, U.S. Glass From A-Z, page 170. That page is identified as a U.S. Glass Company Catalogue Reprint from the 1915 Mexican Catalogue. The page shows 15 items in the "Two Flower" pattern. The pattern is not identified by name on the Catalogue but only as Tableware Pattern #15138. The chart on page 24 of the same book indicates that Two Flower is "NBA" (name by author).
It may be that most of this pattern was exported to Mexico, which would explain its scarcity in the USA.

That would explain why the pattern name of TWO FLOWERS does not show up in any of the pattern glass books.

Just want to thank Dorothy Alden for solving the mystery regarding the Heisey Crystolite spider dish. I brought the dish to the meeting last month and they couldn't be sure if it was Heisey. Thanks to Dorothy, she was able to research and find that it was indeed Heisey. Heisey was an amazing company that produced spectacular glass. Also, for those of you who are Heisey Orchid Etch collectors, if you'd like to see the real flower in bloom check out the link on this site for information for an orchid show. You won't be sorry. Hope to see you there.

In one of Gene Florence's pattern identification books he lists a depression glass pattern called "Checkerboard & Windmill." The maker is unknown and it says that the pattern has 7 items. The colors are green, crystal and iridescent. I have started to collect this pattern in green, and so far I have only found 8" diameter plates. Does anyone have any idea what the other pieces are? I met my husband at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, and he has a lot of Dutch ancestry, so this pattern is very appealing to me!

Hello Debbie...I have an old copy (1972) of a book by Hazel Marie Weatherman, the first author who researched Depression Glass, and she calls the pattern "Windmill & Checkerboard. In the book she shows an 8" plate, 4" ashtray, 5 1/2" nappy (bowl), and a 4" plate. It came in green and crystal, produced in the late 20's and some pieces just carry the checkerboard design. This is all according to the book "Colored Glassware of the Depression Era". It is listed in the "Occasional & Occasionally Found Pieces" section. This was the first research done on depression glass, so the information given was what she could find at that time. I don't think that pattern will be very easy to find, but our club Glass Show & Sale is April 19 & 20th, and there is a very good chance that you will find pieces of this pattern. at the show. We have 24 dealers from all over the midwest. We also have a Glass Identification Booth and you can get more information of this pattern, our club has an extensive library on glass and we will have those books at the show. You can get specific information about the show on our website. It's well worth attending. Thanks for your inquiry......Mary Jo Piccinini/Show Chairperson **************It's Tax Time! Hello all! I am searching for Depression- era glass items from my family's company. All items have the words "George Urban Milling Co., Buffalo NY, Urban's Liberty Flour" printed on the bottom. I have seen plates, saucers, and cups in pink and green, but I am interested in purchasing any items you may come across with these markings. Please email me at alexucox@gmail.com if you have any information for me. Thank you!

Alex, Your family's company advertising appears on the Hobnail pattern of Depression Glass by the Hocking Glass Company, 1934 - 1936. One of the plates appears in a major Depression Glass reference book by Barbara & Jim Mauzy. There is one listed on Ebay right now (ebay number 380004783936). It ends tomorrow around 10 a.m. EST. You may know all of this, and have already checked Ebay, but in case you haven't, try searching for Hobnail Hocking as well as Urban Milling. I hope someone reading this has some or knows of some. Good luck.

Debi, the new changes you have made to the website look so nice and "springy."
Thanks to the 11 Club members who entered the table setting competition in the Club's 8th Glass Olympics event on March 25th. The creativity of the settings were brilliant as well as beautiful. Congratulations to our winners for BEST USE OF GLASS (Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards): Georgeanne LeDuc (Gold AND Silver), and Cindi Rietze. Winners for BEST THEME: Elpidia Tafoya, Yolanda McDonald, and Dorothy Alden.
The pictures and themes will be posted on the website soon. If you weren't there to see them, check them out in a week or so.
Thanks again. Hope to see you at the Depression Glass Show April 19 and 20, and then at the April 22nd meeting.

I have a beautiful cobalt cup and saucer that I cannot find in any books. I think I brought it to a meeting several years back but don't remember now. Anyway, if anyone can identify this, please let me know. I think it qualifies as elegant glass because both pieces have ground bases. The cup has an unusual square bottom as does the saucer, but the cup is perfectly round on top. The flash may have destroyed the pretty deep blue color but I hope the pictures are clear enough for someone to identify. I don't have a very large library on depression glass, but I can't find it in my books. Maybe the handle shape is recognizable to someone. Pictures to follow...

Hi Everyone: Just wanted to let you know that Stan fell on Wednesday and has two fractures in his hip. He had surgery on Thursday to have three 6 inch screws put in. We missed the Hall China Convention in Pittsburgh which we were going to leave for on Thursday. But, he is home and is fairly comfortable. He's allergic to all pain meds so it's a little more difficult to deal with. We see the doctor again next week so, hopefully he will be doing well enough to make it to the show. Please keep us in your prayers.

Hi Joanne,
How awful! I do hope he'll be well enough to come to the glass show. I have a little tidbit you can tell him I'm sure will raise a smile. Remember how I said a little while ago that the name tag jar was always coming out even since you guys left? Well, at the last meeting the treasurer announced a dollar amount ... and two cents! Everyone chuckled like we used to. When you were president I used to sit near Stan in the back and know he was the one who always threw in the odd change, but I have no idea who did this time. It immediately made me think of you two.

So STAN was the one putting in the odd change! I never knew who it was, and don't know who does it now. Oh well, the Club can always use an extra few cents. We went to the New Haven Show yesterday, and I thought of Stan every time I saw a Hall teapot or jug. Joanne, I think of you when I see so many things, too numerous to mention. We do hope Stan has a speedy recovery and that both of you can make it to the Show. All of those dealers will really miss you guys, as well as all of your friends.

Debi, I thought the handle on your cobalt blue cup and saucer looked familiar. I checked an old Imperial Glass book I have that is really just reprints of old catalogs, and there it is. However, they do not give it a pattern name. At least now we know it's Imperial. I found an Imperial website, www.Imperialglass.org, which has a "Contact Us" link. Maybe if you sent them the pictures they could help you identify it. It really is pretty. I think this website is connected to the Imperial Glass Museum in Belleaire, Ohio. That would be a nice trip sometime (not too far from Michigan).

Sharon,
I took your advice and wrote to one of the Imperial Glass dealers listed on that website and got a quick response. It is the SQUARE NO. 760 line. A little more searching on the web and I also saw the name HAZEN associated with it. The dealer told me that Ritz blue (cobalt) was not a color listed with this pattern, but neither was black amethyst and I saw a picture of a center handled serving dish in that color. Another Depression Glass mystery solved! Anyone else got a mystery to solve?

Be sure to check the Macomb Daily today (4/16/08). There is an article about this weekend's Show and about the Club on Page 1 of Section B (at the bottom of the page). The article is not 100% accurate, but the information about the Show is correct, which is the reason for the article in the first place. Yolanda McDonald's Olympic entry, which was mostly Jadite, is pictured but described as "Candlewick" by Imperial. I think someone switched pictures! Hope to see you all at the Show. Sharon

Patricia,
I know you have been personally contacted by Sharon and possibly someone else in the GLDGC by now. There were signs posted that all sales were final. It was up to the buyers to make sure items were to their satisfaction before buying them. If lids were taped down, the tape should have been removed and the pieces inspected to your satisfaction. I do not know what happened in your situation when you were paying for your items. Since the club booth was made up of more than 60 people, it is hard to know immediately if the item was priced accordingly because of an ill-fitting lid, if the lids were taped down, or even if show go-ers made switches that went unnoticed before you bought the pieces. There is also a missing unbought mustard with lid from yet another club seller that might have been included somehow in this mixup. At this point, without the sellers being able to see the pieces with their own eyes there is no way to know if their top and bottom pieces truly went together or how they may have been mixed up before you entered the pictured.
We hope that everyone who bought items at the show are happy with their purchases and your situation will be followed up on, but it is the policy on the club booth that all sales are final.

I have posted two pictures following this message. An elderly lady I know has asked me to identify this bowl for her and tell her about how much it is worth. I know it's Cambridge's Rose Point, but can't tell which piece it is. None of my Elegant Glass books list a bowl like this. I've measured it (with a wooden ruler) at 5-7/8" in diameter. It has 4 feet, it is not flared, and I wouldn't call it deep (about 2-5/8" high). Any of you Cambridge experts have any ideas? Please help!!

I'm having no luck I.D.ing a green Depression glass measuring cup that is 2 cup size and has raised lettering on bottom "Handimaid" and raised lettering curving above that, "Made in U.S.A.". All the measurements are the same style, raised glass numbers and letters. The design is pretty plain, has a footed base. It is genuine, belonged to my mother, but just would like to know what company made it but no link or my old Pocket Guide to Depression Glass has shed any light on this. Thanks for any help.

I have checked my Kitchen Glassware book and don't find a measuring cup marked Handimaid. I, too, did an online search and the item obviously exists, but no information about the maker...just listed for sale and in someone's inventory. Maybe someone else will come along and can ID it for you.
I was looking for used books on Amazon.com recently and checked on the Ruby Stained Heacock book again. There's one for sale very reasonably priced if anyone is interested. Just type in those three words under books and it will come up.

Lee: We will have to ask John what his recipe is for cleaning stained china. I know one way is a very strong hydrogen peroxide formula, but I heard that you must order it in a large quantity so only china restorers usually have it. It has to be immersed for a long time too, like weeks or a month. I have seen excellent results on items that have had this done though. I think you can buy a jeweler's loup at many different price levels. I just searched online and there's plenty available, even from Amazon.com. It's spelled either loup or loupe.
Rae: Your dish with that little waffle-like texture reminds me of Murano glass from Italy. Just a guess though. I think pin dishes or trays really were part of a lady's dresser set. Safety pins or straight pins may be the first kind of pins that pop into mind, but I think it was for hairpins which are seldom used any longer.

This message is for members who will be attending our next Great Lakes Depression Glass Club meeting on June 24th. In your Newsletter, I had asked for some swirly patterns to compare with our main presentation on "Spiral" by Hocking Glass Company which will be presented by James Retzloff. I still need a piece of "U.S. Swirl" by U. S. Glass, "Spiral Flutes" by Duncan & Miller, "Jamestown" by Fostoria, and "Twist" by Heisey. While I have pictures of the above, it would be nicer to be able to compare actual pieces to learn to tell the differences between the many confusing swirly twirly patterns. Email me at sharo2507@aol.com if you have any of the above, preferable a plate, saucer, or platter. Thanks. See you next week.

This message is to members of the Great Lakes Depression Glass Club who were unable to attend the June meeting, our last until September. It has been my pleasure to serve as your Vice President for the last two years. Thanks to you for your support, whether it was by doing a presentation, a table setting, bringing in something for the Participation Table, doing a Mini Presentation, taking part in the Olympics, giving me a recommendation for a speaker, or an idea for a presentation subject. We had some great displays of glass, thanks to our members. I look forward to being part of the audience when your new VP, Dorothy Alden, plans the meeting beginning in September. See you then. I hope you all have a wonderful summer.

Is there a dealer who specializes in both patterns that I can be directed to with knowlege in these areas? Thanks Glen

Glen, I also have a great appreciation for the Cambridge Everglade, Arcadia, and Leafline patterns. Your best source for printed reference material on this pattern is the Cambridge Glass Catalog Reprints that have been made available by the National Cambridge Collectors, Inc. Their website is www.cambridgeglass.org. Go to the section on Books by Cambridge. The 1930-1934 Catalog Reprints and the 1940's Catalog Reprints are the two that I recommend for this pattern. The organization also publishes a monthly newsletter that has had articles in the past about this pattern. Membership in the organization will give you access to many of the past articles. Did you see my Table setting that is shown on this site? Go to the Feb. 2007 Table Settings tab to see some of the beautiful pieces of Everglade and Arcadia. The table settings at our meetings are always beautiful and informative. You don't say if you are local to Michigan, but you could expect to find at least a few pieces of Everglade at our show in April. Most other areas have Depression Glass Clubs and Shows also. Many show dealers are willing to look for specialty pieces for you if you are a serious collector. Good luck in your search for more of this Depression Era Glass.

Thanks for your helpful reply Dorothy. Yes I saw your lovely Feb,2007 Table setting in the Everglade and Arcadia Leaf Line patterns-in crystal. Seeing the different pieces you have collected just fueled the fire for more collecting of these very hard to find patterns. Yes I want to become a member of the National Cambridge Collectors, Inc. I am local to Nevada. It seems like I will have success in aquiring more pieces at shows and from dealers. I would really love for a glass show and sale to be held here in Nevada. I'm pretty sure I will have to travel to another state for this to happen. I have lived in Nevada for many years and nothing happens here in regards to glass shows and sales. Thanks again Glen

I am very glad Glen found this board and he makes a very good point about not being local to where the biggest and best glass shows are held. eBay is obviously a great source for adding to one's collection or glass pattern, but it may take some full time glass dealers and/or pattern specialists to be able to fill in those hard to find pieces for collectors.
We are beginning our new season of club meetings and maybe we can come up with a few solutions of putting people in distant locations in touch with the glass dealers from our show. I'm sure many dealers probably retain want lists from buyers and we can pass that along via our website somehow. Stay tuned to this message board for further suggestions after our Sept. 23 meeting. Glen, please subscribe to this board so you'll receive an email when new messages are posted. Perhaps if we incorporate a wanted section into our website, we'll get a lot more traffic and provide a conduit between buyers and dealers here.
Great board meeting yesterday. I think our new 2008-09 meeting season is off to a great start. I'm off now to work on website updates and changes.

Debi, I love the new Fall touches you've added to the website.
Also, I see you've added Jayne Saeger's story, of how the Club got started, in the CLUB HISTORY Section. I remember she told me that they had to build a fire and photograph the picture of her holding the Dogwood plate in front of the fire to get the pattern to show up so well.
Thanks for all the work you do on the website. It really looks good.

I have this little 2-1/4" high mustard that looks like Heisey Crystolite, but isn't marked. The books I've looked in either don't give a measurement, or gives 3". Does anyone know for sure if the Crystolite mustard is 3" high and no less? Thanks for any help you can give. I keep going back and forth on this.

Hi, I've posted a picture of my Heisey Crystolite Mustard below. Sorry the picture isn't better but I have it packed away and this is my inventory picture. There is also a picture of the Heisey Crystolite Mustard at www.replacements.com. I didn't realize until recently that they carry a large inventory of Depression Glass. It's a good place to do comparison shopping and research. They usually do a good job of ID's, but I recently noticed that they had listed the "look-a-like" mustard as Heisey. It was removed before sale and listed as "error in listing". The easy difference to notice between the jars is in the knobs. The Heisey jar has a fluted knob while the knob on the other jar is perfectly round. As far as I know, all Crystolite knobs are fluted. Look at a larger Crytolite item like a candy dish or sugar bowl to see what I mean. The flutes are difficult to see in pictures of the mustard but they should be there. Also, the top rim of the Heisey mustard jar is scalloped while the other one is flat. The jar is usually marked with the diamond H. The Heisey mustard paddle is more substantial and looks like a little canoe paddle. It is usually marked also. That still leaves the possibility that your jar could be a Heisey salt. I don't think so. Just to be certain, I sent a picture to the curator of the Heisey museum to ID. They charge $5 to non-members to ID an item as Heisey or not. It is a free service to members-great! I'll let you know what they say if I get an answer.

I just found another site with what should be a reliable ID for the Heisey Crystolite mustard. The Washington DC Heisey Study Club publishes a very fine newsletter and makes it available online. The link below has a great article on Heisey mustards in many patterns. They show the real Heisey Crystolite mustard and the "look-a-like" one side by side. Here's the link http://www.capitalheiseyclub.org/Newsletters/HH_01_07.pdf

Thank you, Dorothy, for the information about the Heisey Mustard. From your description, mine isn't Heisey. I had checked the Replacements.com website, and the mustard they pictured looked identical to mine but didn't give a measurement, which added to my confusion. The last time I checked, it was gone from their Crystolite listing.
Now, if I could find a cheap REAL HEISEY MUSTARD, I could put both pieces in the Reproduction Display at our next show. I'll keep my eyes open for one, even if it has a flaw. For our purposes, since we want people to be able to pick things up to compare, it doesn't really matter if it's chipped. If anyone has one, please let me know.
Thanks again, Dorothy. I look forward to hearing the decision from your Heisey source.

Polly,
Sorry, but you are a bit far away for any collectors or dealers from Troy and our surrounding area. If you haven't yet checked at any local antique malls to sell to dealers, you could always do it yourself on eBay. If you have no idea on patterns, your library should have a few Depression Glass books that would help you identify and get an idea of value too.

You made a good point, Debbie, about new members who may not have attended a Blue Christmas Party before. You can get in at 6:30 p.m. If someone wasn't at the last meeting and didn't sign up to come, come anyway. Just bring a dish to add to the buffet table. (The Club provides meat.) There are ovens to keep hot dishes hot. There is no business meeting at the party. Regarding the gift exchange, if you bring a wrapped gift of vintage glass (value around $10.00), you will receive a gift in exchange. If you do not bring a gift, you will not receive a gift. We try to pay $10.00, hopefully for something worth more than that. It's always interesting to walk around to each table to see what everyone else received. See you tomorrow night. The party is always fun. I look forward to it every year.

It is a GREEN FOOTED TUMBLER. It stands about 4 1/2" tall. It is basically a colonial pattern having 16 raised panels around the interior of the tumbler. There is a stippled medallion on one side bearing the likes of George Washington. Underneath the circular medallion the dates 1732 - 1932 are embossed. Below the dates there is a band of raised stars around the tumbler. Could this tumbler have been made by one of the depression companies to commemorate the 200th birthday of Washington? Any information your could give me would be helpful. \

Christina: the decanter set was sold at the last Depression Glass Show by the club member that owned it. Not really sure of the selling price, but I'm pretty sure it was below those book values. Maybe it was also made as just the bottle and not a full set. We have a meeting on Tuesday and hopefully I will remember to ask the seller if he has additional info to post on it for you.

I should also mention this is an individual nut cup size, not a larger dessert dish or anything like that.

Regarding your green pieces, are they dark green? or light green? Do you know the pattern? Are they plain, ribbed, or have any kind of pattern or etching? I don't subscribe to all of the papers. If you see anything in a paper you receive, please let me know. (A note on this Board would be fine.)
Some of the papers are: Macomb Daily, Free Press, Oakland Press, Collector's News, Great Lakes Trader, Grosse Pointe News, Iralian Tribune, and The Sentry. I not done yet. Thanks.

If you have an article, send it to the auction exchange. I'm sending a copy home with Gordon. Sorry I didn't get your message yesterday about Pt. Huron Tomorrow. I'm going at 2pm up 32 mile across from the cemetery to look at a house to do an estate sale. I booked one yesterday for May 1,2,3 on Barbara Ann across from Frontier Town. They have beautiful antique furniture, not as many smalls as I'd like but I think it will a worthwhile sale. Sue ************** Need a job? Find employment help in your area. Mary,
You asked "Where are the sales taking place?" If you mean the Depression Glass Show, it's April 25 and 26 in Madison Heights. All the information including location and a link to a map, are on the first page of our website. You can see many pictures of last year's show to get a good idea of what it's like. Go to www.depressionglassclub.com. You'll see it all there.

I left my digital camera at the last meeting of the Depression Glass Club in March. I've contacted the Church, and she doesn't have it and hasn't seen it. I'm hoping that a member noticed it and picked it up planning to bring it to the next meeting. I don't think I had my name on it or in the case. It's a Sony Mavica, an older, larger one, in a black case. If you have it, please let me know. You can write me at Sharo2507@aol.com. Thanks.

Hi Sharon! I got your message and I hope you find your camera. I had the same experience last May on a cruise. I left it in the ladies room in the stall and two days later it was returned to me by the ship's purser which restored my faith in good, honest people. Say a prayer to St. Anthony and perhaps this will help. I am hopeful for you. Sincerely, Georgeanne LeDuc **************Feeling the pinch at the grocery store? Make dinner for $10 or less. Don,
Most people who read this board belong to the Great Lakes Depression Glass Club in SE Michigan. If you care to post your general location and an email address for people to get in touch with you, that certainly might help things along. Even if you are not in our area, people from anywhere can access this site. You just never know who might be looking, or who really wants the Manhattan pattern. There's also a number of dealers who check in here.

I think I'm losing my mind. I posted a few days ago that I left my camera at the last meeting of the Club. Well, I was unpacking a box of stuff we brought home from Kane's Town Hall Antiques (where we are dealers), and guess what I found? The darn camera. I don't remember taking it to the shop. Gordon doesn't either. That's what happens when you get old. Anyway, the mystery is solved.

Hi, I am from Wisconsin and just purchased a miniature set of four glasses and pitcher in what was termed "pink depression glass". This doll or child's set has pheasants and peacocks alternating around each piece. These designs cover most of each piece and are pressed into the glass. My knowledge of depression era glass is minimal and wonder if anyone can provide any tips on how to identify true pink children's depression glass pieces. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Dear Mary Schmit, Your recently purchased set is most likely not true Depression Glass or Early American Pattern Glass. I own a set that sounds like your description and often see it on eBay. I believe it is an "import". It is a cute piece but has minimal value as a collectible. Most of the true Depression Glass patterns did not include children's pieces. The few that did usually labeled them as a Child's Junior Set. Your best bet to identify those patterns is to obtain a copy of one of the Depression Book Guides such as those published by Gene Florence. He usually includes a picture and/or a listing with the few patterns that include children's pieces. The pattern "Cherry Blossom" is one. Mosser and other companies have recently made toy glass pieces that look like Depression Glass but were never made in the era . Those items may still be labeled as Jennifer, Lindsey, Caprice, Cameo, Ballerina, "depression style", etc. Doris Lechler wrote several books on Toy Glass (Depression and Pattern Glass) but they are out of print and difficult to find. Pattern Glass pieces were made prior to the Depression Era and range in price from a few dollars to the hundreds. Many glass books can be found at local libraries or online. Attend antique shows, talk to local dealers, and search online to become educated. Know before buying if paying a significant amount. Most of all enjoy your new collecting and buy what you enjoy. The newer pieces made by Mosser is still made in America and collected and enjoyed by many.

Hello everyone, I am very new to the whole glass collecting game. I've recently come into about 30 different pieces of what I believe is depression glass. They seem to be all different patterns, mostly pink. Can anyone recommend a good book or website to help me better identify what I have? Thanks so much in advance!

Tonya: You may get some better advice from a more knowledgable collector, but I would start by doing a Google search on your computer for "Depression Glass Patterns." If that doesn't help you find all the names, then check out your local library for Depression glass pattern books by Florence, Coe, Mauzy and others, I'm sure. Good luck! Hope you find one or more patterns you like a lot and work to complete a set.

I'm a former member of GLDGC (joined in the late 70's), and chaired our glass show in the mid-80's. I miss the group! For several years, after I remarried, we wintered in Florida. My husband died in November 2007 and now that I'm alone I've decided to make the move permanent. Being gone all winter (and the long drive to meetings) was why I dropped my membership. Older members may remember me as the "wall pocket lady" as I have a collection of nearly 1,400. I'll be having an auction on Saturday, August 1, 10 am. Listing and photos should be available at http://www.rowleyauctions.com/ by July 1. The wall pockets are going on the auction block. There are many American-made pottery (Weller, Roseville, Royal Copley, Van Briggle, Fulper, Red Wing, Stangl, to name a few) as well as glass, chalkware, pottery & porcelain from all over the world. Will also be selling all my "glass books", many of which are out of print now. Lots of good information in them still!

Sorry to hear about your husband. I am the editor of the GLDGC newsletter. Although I don't remember you from when you were a member, I do remember your doing a program for us with your wall pockets. If it is OK with you, I will put this information in the June newsletter that I am working on now. If you can get me more information, such as the location and time of the auction, I will include that as well. And perhaps there is a contact number for those who do not have computers to get time, directions, etc. On Fri, Jun 5, 2009 at 11:24 PM, QT - Linda Douglas White < qtopic-40-r8he4WLwiA7@quicktopic.com> wrote:

Hello everyone, I am really, really sorry I missed the meeting last night, I just got my dates mixed up...let me blame it on all the moving and relocating tasks that needed attention. When Carol K. called last night....well it was too late to drive in from Indianapolis...I don't think I could make the trip in 30 minutes. LOL I had the boxes already packed for the presentation. And, I was really looking forward to seeing so many of my friends. I truly have enjoyed being a part of the club for all these years, and not just because of the cookies and treats. Well the fun, hugs and smiles too. I came to the club for knowledge and left with something much more valuable...friendships. We truly are a great club, everyone is always willing to share and help....people may come and go, but the spirit of our founding members is always present. I once heard that a man's wealth is measured by how many friends he has, and I truly feel like a millionaire. Thank you everyone for your recent emails, notes and wishes, as well as your friendship. And it goes without saying, when in the Indianapolis area give me a jingle. I recently ran into former member Shirley T. at an antique show in Western Michigan, so there is hope that our paths may cross again. Thank you and best wishes to everyone...especially during garage sale season! John 317.622.1622

Does anyone know where I can buy a battery operated "black" light? I saw a woman with one at an antique store and neglected to ask her where she bought it. I just assumed I could easily purchase one.I'm not having any luck. If there are none available in this area, what kind would be good for me to buy. I know nothing about them. Thanks so much. Rose P.

I've seen them on eBay in various sizes. Like the idea of the LED lights which are powerful but so small and lightweight. Maybe could find at flea market. Hope someone else has a better suggestion.

Do an online search. I purchased mine online. Can't remember the website as it was over a year ago. Very small. Fits in my purse. Handy to have, especially if looking at vaseline glass. They really do work for as small as they are. If I remember correctly it was aroung $20.00. Mary

OK, I need everyone's expertise on what this item is used for. It was listed on eBay as a 6-1/2 inch long open salt and it's definitely not that. It looks to be about 1-1/2 to 2 inches wide. Some of us suggested holding sugar packets, crackers, olives, etc. I know someone will not only know it's intended use but who made and when, as well.
Picture to follow so please go to the chat page to view the picture.

Time is flying, and the deadline to sign up for our Club trip to visit the Glass History Gallery in Fostoria, Ohio and the National Heisey Glass Museum in Newark, Ohio is fast approaching. A wonderful itinerary has been worked out by Kathy Ritzenthaler and Martha Bernstein, including group meals at restaurants and a stay at the Quality Inn in Heath, Ohio for a reasonable $59.46 + tax (with breakfast included). Keep in mind that those who would prefer a one day trip can go to Fostoria and return the same day if desired. If you are a member who doesn't often (or ever) attend our meetings, feel free to call Kathy or Martha, who will more fully describe the trip and send you a packet of maps and information. This is not a bus trip. We are driving, and some members still have room in their cars or vans if you do not want to drive yourself. DEADLINE FOR CONFIRMING RESERVATIONS AT THE QUALITY INN IS OCT. 9TH. Our block of rooms is reserved under the name Kathy Ritzenthaler for the GLDGC. The confirmation number is 140841. Anywone who frequents this website, but is NOT a member of our Club, is invited to join us for this trip. Give Kathy or Martha a call:
Kathy Ritzenthaler (248) 377-0616 or (586) 242-3099 (cell) Martha Bernstein (248) 641-9636 or (248) 933-5517
Several people who signed up to go have had to cancel due to circumstances beyond their control. We do not want to cancel this trip. Please call Kathy or Martha and plan to join us. It will be a pleasant experience for anyone who loves glass, and we'll learn a lot besides.

Hi,
I just talked to Kathy about the message I left regarding our trip to Fostoria and Newark, Ohio (the next message you will read). She said that she must be informed by October 2nd if you want to go (unless you have already signed up). The other deadline I gave, Oct. 9th, is for the hotel reservation.
Kathy has negotiated beneficial rates that will not be available if our numbers shrink. In fact, we need a few more to carry this trip on. I hope you decide to come with us.

This is just a thought I'm going to throw out there and it may or may not help with the numbers of attendees. The reason I did not sign up to go is because my open salt club is having our meeting there next spring on April 10. We don't have big numbers at our meetings, but 10-12 might be enough to help you with room rates, and then it would benefit both groups. We never try for lower room rates because we are such a small group. I will talk with our meeting host and see if she has any suggestions. I know it may be a bit early for that planning, but we might be able to combine two small groups into one. If that sounds like a good time for that trip to you (given the show is always in April) then I'll put you in touch with our meeting host.
I can come to the board meeting this Thursday on the 8th. I was going to miss it when it was on the 1st.

The Heisey Convention is usually the 3rd weekend in June, running from Thursday - Sunday. The 2010 dates aren't published on their website yet but the dates will probably be June 17-20. The Cambridge Convention is always the week after the Heisey Convention. The next Cambridge Convention is June 23-27, 2010.

I have 18 pieces of original blue madrid. Part of a collection I had over 30 years ago. 2-Dinner plates, 4-luncheon plates, 2-footed sherberts, 2-sherbert plates, 2-saucers, 1-cup, 3-5 1/2" tumblers, 1-10" oval bowl and 1-footed salt/pepper shaker (not a pair). I am asking $275.00 for all. I live in Port Huron, MI area. All pieces are in good shape. I also have 1 pair of footed salt & pepper shakers in the clear madrid - one foot has small chip on it. I would like to sell it also. Call me at 810-531-0090 or email me for more info.

I was just browsing through our website, looking at all the various tablesettings and presentations we've had over the last few years. It's really quite amazing, and also very beautiful to see. At this time of Thanksgiving, I'd like to thank Debi Raitz for the great job she does with our website, Dorothy Alden for the programs she's planned, members who have done tablesettings, presentations, or brought in some special piece for all of us to see and admire, Geraldine Young who does such a fine job displaying the cookies for our break, and also to the cookie volunteers. There's a lot of people who make this Club work that I haven't mentioned. It does take a lot of people, each with a special job to do, even if it's just to come and enjoy the meeting. Hope to see all of our members, and maybe a few guests, at the meeting tonight. If not, Happy Thanksgiving.
