Laura had asked about the Meredith Math Institutes (professional development at Meredith College for K-5 and 6-8 teachers)...
here's a link to their website.

Hi -
The Avery County Day is on the 11th, and we plan to do a 9 - 3 session. Unless Katie has additional information, that is all that I have at the moment.
More to follow -

Do we know the details of the Avery day? I have been checking the website and I don't know the time or the place.

Just to let everyone know, we had our spring professional development at Ashe County on Monday, March 10th. We have dates at Alleghany on Thursday, March 20th, and at Avery on Friday, April 11th. The summer session looks to be Monday, July 14th - Thursday, July 17th. We hope to see you all then! As for technology, Katie and I have been looking at our summer schedule and talking about how to best fit in some additional technology sessions. We would like to make this be a part of the summer sessions. We may allow small groups of teachers to do short presentations on what they use because we know that you all have some very different kinds and uses of technology. Tammy Marion and Carmen Wilson, would you like to do something with Smart Boards? Derrick and Mike, would you like to talk about your use of iPods? Anyone else have something that they would like to share? Or is there a specific technology that you would like to see that might require an outside speaker? Please let us know so that we can plan.

To reply about technology-
Yes, we do plan to have this incorporated into sessions. It seems that this may occur in the summer professional development to allow for more flexibility in planning and working with examples. And just so everyone knows, the Math Focus Groups will be hosting a speaker from Texas Instruments at the March meeting. That meeting will be held March 18th at the Broyhill Conference Center in Boone. The session will begin at 4:45 and last about 2 hours. We will be offering renewal credits for your attendance. The speaker, Barbara Simpson, will present about the TINspire and will have enough to allow you to actually participate in the workshop, not just observe. If you'd like to attend or want more information, please let me know.
As for dates for the spring -
Katie and I are currently verifying these with your school districts. We will post them as soon as we can.

.
Do we have a date for a Spring time session yet? Thanks Mike

HI, everyone -
I'll be posting the matrix problems to the TAN website. However, because there was just this week a move from one server to another for personal webpages, I'm having to check and repair some kinks. I'll post the web link with the new and corrected address ASAP.
Thanks!
Tracie

Hi Laura and all! We do have a few sample matrix activities created by Dr. Katrina Palmer, a friend in the mathematical sciences department. I don't think we can post the document here at the chat page, but we will post it on the website (and Laura I'll email you). If others have trouble accessing or finding the page at the website let us know! Also, keep in mind that Dr. Palmer's examples range from algebra 1 appropriate up to integrated 2 appropriate, so you probably won't want to use them all.

I am a teacher at Cranberry Middle School in Avery county. I was wondering if any of you have any good matrices resources (not just typical textbook problems). I sometimes have technical difficulties when I try to access the message board so if you could email your suggestions to me that would be so helpful. My email address is lauraking@averyschools.net. Thanks.

Good thing you sent us this email, because I see that no one from Alleghany has posted. If they are like me, they didn't know this site existed. Could just be my problem--sometimes I'm like my kids, a poor listener.

Donna,
The math teachers at Ashe County Middle School... A teacher, or some teachers, may be coming from the high school for another specific topic, but the TAN info will be discussed before this. Sorry for any confusion. I posted my earlier comment as a result of Tracie's e-mail. :)

Happy New Year, Teacher Algebra Network! We hope the new year is starting off well and that everyone has transitioned smoothly back to school. We will be meeting with our Ashe county group for the first time on Jan.18 (the original day was cancelled because of the weather) and scheduling a second day to meet with everyone sometime in this spring semester.
Keep your eyes peeled for "Equation Talks" and other tidbits we'll be posting here or at the webpage or through email. And as you're reading through the first two chapters of Drischoll's book, think about questioning and using questioning to bring about algebraic reasoning in your classroom, and what aspects of teaching algebraic reasoning you'd like to discuss further in our next meeting. Take care and keep in touch!

Just to let folks know what's going on...
Our first full day of professional development with Alleghany county teachers will be on Nov. 9, then we'll be with teachers from Avery county on Nov. 16, and we are tentatively scheduled to meet with Ashe county folks on Nov.2 (though not everyone has been reached to confirm this, and we may be meeting on the 30th of Nove. instead).
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns about this first day before it happens.

Welcome Teacher Algebra Network participants!

This Quick Topic site will be the forum for our communication related to the grant project. You can access the web page to read posts or you can subscribe to the page and receive posts via email as they are made. It should be a convenient way to keep in touch, and if you are already familiar with the Public School Partnership, you're probably familiar with Quick Topic.

A couple of short announcements -

We are currently working with your curriculum officers to schedule a meeting time at each school district. Hope to see you there!

A basic webpage has been started for the program, and I will continue to add to it and enhance it as things get rolling. Not all links are up and running at this point, but if you'd like to see it, you can click on http://www.appstate.edu/~salinastm/TAN.htm. At this point, Explorer and Safari seem to work well with it. I haven't tried Mozilla, but I know Netscape sometimes has issues with DreamWeaver.

In the meantime, thank you for your interest. We will see you soon .
