All, be advised that the venue for Saturday's race against the University of Maryland has changed due to flooding around Jordan Lake. The race will now be held at University Lake in Carrboro, NC. Refer to our team home page for directions and important updates as we figure this whole thing out!

I would like to thank all the Parents and Friends of the Crew that help out at the "Head of The Hooch" last weekend. Even with last minute changes this “Under the Tent Crew” pulled it off! This is the kind of support the UNC Men’s Crew needs from parents and friends to be successful out on the water. I hope to see more new faces helping out “Under the Tent” during the Spring Racing Season.
The last race of the Fall Racing Season will that place this Saturday on Jordan Lake. For those of you that are new to Crew this Saturdays race is “2000 Meter Sprint”. Sprint racing is the type of racing the Crew will be doing during the Spring Racing Season, so this should be a good preview of what to expect at up coming regattas. I hope to see a lot you out there on Saturday.
Once again thanks to all of you that help and to those that contributed to the “Food Fund” this fall.

TO ALL PARENTS OF CREW MEMBERS

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!!!!!

In a few weeks the entire UNC Men’s Crew will be traveling to largest regatta of the fall rowing season. The “Head of the Hooch” is in Chattanooga, TN on November 7 & 8, 2009. Over the past years the Parents Association has prepared and provided meals for the Crew at the Hooch “Under the Tent” and at other regattas during the year.
We would like to continue our “Under the Tent” support for the Crew for years to come. The problem we are now facing is our food fund is running low and we only have a few volunteers that have pledge to help feed the crew at the Hooch and other upcoming regattas.
If you are planning on attending the Hooch this year we need your help feeding the crew. The crew has grown this year to 25 Varsity members and 35 Novice members, when you add in the Coaches there are 64 hungry mouths to feed for 2 day!
We need volunteers to help cook, serve and clean up at this venue.
We also need for you to send in your annual contributions to the food fund. The annual contribution per crew member is $200.00 or $100.00 per semester, fall & spring.
Mailing information as follows:

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
101 Student Recreation Center
Campus box 8610
Chapel Hill NC, 27599.
On the memo line, denote "Food Fund."
All checks should be made payable to "UNC Men's Crew."

If you can help at the “Head of the Hooch” please contact me via email at drcbill@aol.com or by phone at 919-469-9228

We also need parents in the Triangle Area that can help purchase food and help with the maintenance of the “Under the Tent” equipment.
We also have a need for someone that is email savvy that can send email “blast” to the parents for the association.

Thank you in advance for your support of the UNC Men’s Crew.

Debbie & Peter
I’m happy to hear you will be attending Dad Vail’s this week. As you know with out parental support “Under the Tent” the crew members have to find and pay for their own meals at these events. The Parents Association is always looking for other parent like you that are willing to help with their time or donations to help feed their children at regattas. I’m looking forward to see and working with both of you this week working "Under the Tent".
Thanks as always for your time and efforts for the crew.

We are looking forward to seeing you this weekend at Dad Vails. We will be staying at the Marriott Courtyard Downtown (as I believe you are) and should get there Thursday afternoon. Please let me know what you need us to
bring and what time we need to be at the tent on Friday morning. Maybe we can get together for dinner Thursday night along with any other UNC parents who are in the area? My cell number is 203-858-2610 and Peter's is 201-532-3993.

I want to thank all the parents that help “Under the Tent” preparing and serving meals for the UNC Crew. With parental help like we had this weekend we can continue our program for years to come. We have Dad Vail’s coming up on May 8 & 9 and any parents that are planning to attend this event we need your help “Under the Tent”. Please use this form to offer you time and support. Thanks again to all parents that pinched in this week at Oak Ridge it was a great “Parents Crew” we had on hand. I know we all had great time in spite of Sunday’s weather. I hoping to see you all at another event in the future.

I am putting together the end of the year banquet video/slideshow for our May 2nd End of the Year Banquet and I NEED YOUR PHOTOS! Please send any photos from all races this spring or fall to crchrist@email.unc.edu, or if you would like to send them on a CD, shoot me an e-mail and I'll give you an address to mail them to ASAP.

I will also put a few pictures from each race on the online photo gallery at the end of the season. We keep a team hard drive that will hold ALL the pictures you send as a part of the crew's history.

Thanks for all of your support this season, as always. I look forward to seeing you all at the end of the year banquet!

We also will need 8 bags of ice for Saturday, if you can both pick up 4 bags and bring them to the tent when you arrive that would be great. Chris, I can't find your direct email address - so hope this gets to you - we see on the website you had an Ergathon! Please post on the website how & where contributions can be sent!!! Note if this is tax deductible or not (we are all in the "tax" frame of mind in that it's only days till April 15th when we all have to pay yet more to the Fed!). AND please email this article to the broadcast crew parents broadcast list like we were sent the info on the awards banquet to get broader parent support of what you all are doing.

Best of luck - Janet Correll

Thanks to all of you for the great help last weekend at Lake Lure. Another rainy day at the race course but the students rowed well against a good Ohio State team. We had parents from as far away as Tampa, Florida and Georgia plus having done the drive from Chapel Hill that is a long way also.

Parents have been great during my two years at UNC. You make life alot easier for the coaches (not having to run to the grocery store constantly) by providing the food for our team.

A note on hotels for the Southern Intercollegiate Championships. The team will be staying in Oak Ridge at the Super 8. I made the reservations last fall as Oak Rige si a relatively small town and the regatta draws crew from the entire south and even several from Philadelphia.

Knoxville is only about 30 minutes south of the rowing venue and has a great number of hotels at all prices. The best location for easy access to the rowing site, (Melton Lake) is on the west side of Knoxville along I-40. Google the Oak Ridge Rowing Association for directions, etc. to the venue. We will have information up on the web site soon.

In Philadelphia, the regatta draws 120 colleges from around the country. There is also racing, across the river, in Cherry Hill (ECAC Championships.) The team will be staying near the Philly airport at a Day's Inn. The regatta web site is "dadvail.org" for directions, info on parking at the regatta, etc.

Thanks again,

Richard

Several parents have asked about hotels at upcoming regattas so I will pass along our recommendations(and disclaim all responsibility if you prefer 5 star accomodations). In Oak Ridge both the Staybridge Suites and Doubletree are fine and about 15 minutes to the racecourse.
In Philadelphia (Dad Vails), the Marriott Courtyard Downtown is in a great location for restaurants and is about 15 minutes from the course. Several families will be staying there.
The Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga is scheduled for Nov. 7 - 8 and hotels are already booked. I was able to get a room in the Hilton Garden Inn which is a short walk to the river. For those of you who are new to the team this is a great venue in a terrific location.
Hope to see you all in Oak Ridge!

Hi my daughter is a coxswain for the novice team. We live in Chicago so haven't made any regattas yet, but we are hoping to come down to the Tennessee regatta. I know we are late for hotel reservations, but is there a particular hotel that most parents might be stayin at so I can try there first?

Thank you.

Coach Laurance stated on Saturday Morning “We will probably arrive by 6:30am on Saturday (staying only a few minutes away.) The first race starts at 8:30 so the athletes need to start thinking about getting reading by 7:30am.”
Those who will be helping “Under the Tent” should arrive between 6:00 & 6:15 AM. There is not much setup and minimal prep (no cooking just slicing bagels) for this event.
Hope to see every one on Saturday.

Regarding this weekend UNC Mens Crew event at Lake Lure.
Friday night the Crew has their diner set up.
Saturday after the event Kay Tucker will be providing lunch for the Crew.
Saturday Morning Coach Laurance has informed me “The crew will start racing about 8:30am so our usual hot breakfast will probably not be digested before the student’s race.”
He has requested that the parents association provide juice, bagels, cream cheese, granola bars, breaks bread, peanut butter, Gatorade and water for Saturday morning.
Our “Food Fund” is running low but we will try and provide what is requested.
Any help serving the food to the crew is always welcomed.

Thank you for all your support and efforts.

The race course finishes just before the sandy beach at Rumbling Bald Resort on Lake Lure. The teams race directly toward the shore so it is a little hard to figure out how the races are progressing.

The resort web site is: http://rumblingbald.com/LakeLure/index.aspx.

The team will be up Friday afternoon for a quick practice on the Lake. We have yet to work out the race schedule with Ohio State but last year we started racing about 9:00 am.

The resort has lot's of accomodations with some nice ocondotype rooms for under $90.

They also have directions on their web site.

We will post directions and race schedule, on our site, as soon as we work that out.

Thank you to all of our parents who came out to support the team this past weekend at the Hooch. With a growing team, we realize that it is becoming a full-time job to keep everyone fed, and we truly appreciate everything that you do.

Also, because of a very packed racing schedule, I was unable to get photographs and/or video of all of our boats (15 entries, wow!), so if you have some good photographs of any of our boats that you would like to share, we would love to have them for the website and for use in our promotional videos. FYI...for those of us that couldn't make it to Boston for the weekend's races, the Head of the Charles website has a "live webcast" of all of the races. We've been watching this morning and its pretty good. Its being broadcast from the Cambridge boathouse which is about 2 1/2 miles into the course or about 1/2 mile from the finish. They clearly identify each boat and crew as they come by.

Website is www.hocr.org

Then middle right in the yellow section click on live webcast

For anyone going to Boston this weekend and attending the dinner on Friday night, the Bertucci's in Kendall Square is at 799 Main Street, phone 617-661-8356. I had a bit of trouble locating this one originally on their website. In talking to the restaurant to get any further info I could (as I am totally unfamiliar with the area and will have a very short time to locate it), they say they are between Central & Kendall Square across from a "candy factory".

Ms. Correll,

I apologize, that is my fault. That article was not supposed to be published yet, as we were still arranging all of the details, but now that it is all straightened out, there will be a parent-rower dinner on Friday night at 6:30pm at Bertucci's in Kendall Square. More details will be on the front page of the website today.

RSVP to Alex at akowalsk@email.unc.edu before Wednesday, 10/15. Thanks!

I see on the UNC Crew website that we need to RSVP for the dinner in Boston - but - it does not say who to RSVP to. Anyone know? Should someone reading this be the RSVP contact, please put Janet & Maggie Correll down (Josh's sister). We land in Boston at 5pm and will do our best to be at the restaurant as close to 6:30 as we can.

Special thanks to everyone that attended the Parent's Weekend activities this past Saturday. I trust everyone had a great time and received some real "hands-on" experience powering some of our boats with your students.

I hope everyone also had the chance to sign-up for the Parent Association's email distribution and volunteering opportunities at forthcoming regatta's. Remember, we ARE the Fan Club for this team....so we want to keep everyone informed!! This Message Board is the primary means of communication, but selective emails will be used where appropriate to help expedite the process when needed.

Special thanks also to all those who helped coordinate this last weekend's activities, food prep, and all the logistics that went into making the event an overwhelming success!

ROW HEELS!!

To All
This Saturday (9/27/08) Race with Duke at Lake Michie has been canceled by Duke. The UNC Crew Coaching scrambled and tried to work out an event with NC State on Lake Wheeler but due to the last minute notice from Duke this was not possible.
I hope to see everyone at Parents Weekend. The Crew has a great schedule planed for the all of us. More information on Parents Weekend will be post in the next few days.
Thank you

Dear UNC Crew Parents,

Welcome back to another exciting season of competitive racing regattas! We hope everyone had a great summer, and are fully-charged-up to give some outstanding support to our team!

We have now officially launched the UNC Men’’s Crew Parents Association with the coaches and the UNC Crew Student Board, to proactively plan for this season’s needs. As was mentioned at the banquet last spring, it’s mission is to provide the UNC Men's Crew coaches and team members with support “on land” during regatta events, allowing the coaches and the crew members to concentrate on race activity “on the water”. Additionally, it will provide opportunity for tax deductible contributions by parents for funding Regatta meals as well as team equipment and capital needs as identified by UNC Crew coaching staff.

As such, we have assembled an eMail distribution list supplemental to the Parent posting section on the UNC Crew website, to broaden communication capabilities and assure everyone is notified of key events and needs of the team. We will be actively communicating with parents of all rowers throughout the academic year..

In the few past years, a core group of parents have supported and attended the various regatta events. One thing we have learned is that rowers need a lot of food to keep them focused on the river, and not on their hunger. Many of the families graciously provided food or donated money for this purpose. With the donation of a tent and a grill, we currently provide hot meals and healthy snacks at the regattas. The support and attendance by parents and friends has been GREATLY appreciated by all involved.

In an effort to streamline the food purchase and acquisition process for those organizing meals for the regatta venues, the Parents Association requests that all rower families donate $200 to the tax deductible Food Fund per academic year ($100 per semester). This amounts to approximately $5.00/meal.

Please send in your semester payment to the following address with the accompanying routing information to assure correct channeling of funds. Additional donations are also greatly appreciated to help sponsor additional rowers! The Treasurer on the Student Board will track incoming funds from all rower families, and assure routing and use of those funds exclusively for this purpose.

UNC Men's Crew Club
101 Student Recreation Center, CB #8610
Chapel Hill, NC 27599-8610

The designation code is 6255.

The process will be the following:
1) Checks donated require designation to be set aside for the food fund
2) Student Board will keep track of those donations in their budget
3) Gifts (your checks) will be processed through the Carolina Fund to have receipts given to all donor families for tax deductible contributions.

Many thanks for all of your continued support…..and ROW HEELS!!

Hi Greg --

Good to hear from you! Yes, we will be forming Parent Committees. The steering group has actually been meeting with the student Board and the coaches on a regular basis and via telecon. We will also be compiling a list of all email addresses of parents to better broadcast news of interest, and foster greater use of this posting board as well.

Stay tuned!

if it might help anyone, the Marriott Courtyard in Cambridge (which is right on the Charles River within the regatta racing section) will be releasing any extra rooms from team blocks on the night of Sept. 17th or the morning of Sept. 18th. Possibly a near in room could be booked then, have no idea what the pricing might be - a quick call to sales might answer that though.

For those of you electing to attend either the Head of the Charles/Hooch regattas, please be advised that nearby hotels are filling quickly at these two venues. We're ending up staying approximately 8-9 miles from the race area for both of these locations....still not a bad drive, but I would imagine these hotels will fill as well, once we get closer to the calendar dates for these events.

Thanks to all of you for your great support, this year. I enjoyed speaking with each of you at the races and the food and support you provided was a big reason for the continued success of the UNC Crew Program. I know that it takes all of us to make the experience an enjoyable and productive one. With great parents support, alumni support, hard working, bright student/athletese and a fine group of coaches, the future is very bright.

Thanks again to all of the parents and their tramendous support this season. I especially would like to thank the Faisons, Revelles, and Kowalskis for all that they did for us in MA for ECACs, along with all of the families that helped out down in Philly with the Dad Vail regatta.

I also wanted to let everyone know that the photo gallery is being updated as I type. I have included over 150 pictures from the spring season in the gallery. I have also uploaded the team pictures that were taken last week. Most of these pictures came from parents, so again I would like to thank you all for making this possible. There sure would not be much of a photo gallery if it weren't for all of our family photographers out there.

If you have any pictures that you would like to see published in this gallery, please send them to me at crchrist@email.unc.edu

Thanks again.

Hi, we'll bring the following 2 items to the boathouse Wednesday evening.

50 - 10" floured Tortilla wraps
1 - 24 ct Gatoraid

It looks to me like everything else needs to be kept cold and/or purchased onsite. Thus, we'll also send some money with Callie to help offset some of the expense. Please let us know if the list expands with anything else that can be purchased here and sent up.

We missed you this weekend, Bill and Lisa! You got lots of praise and thank yous - hope you realize how appreciated you are.
On to the regattas this coming weekend. I will get the chicken fajita stuff, muffins, bagels, cream cheese, milk, eggs, salads and as much ice as we can.
David, I think you are sending 6 pounds of meatballs in additon to the 6 pounds left from last time - is that right? I guess we will also need more tomato sauce - if so I will get it.
Bill, is some of the stuff you posted for the Worcester rowers - like the lunch meats, cheese and some of the sub buns and bread? I will get the sub buns for Philadelphia as well as bread but think we also need some lunch meats and cheese so will get it. Also are you sending the propane cooking ring?
Thanks so much to all of you (Bill, Denis, David and Janet) for making sure this all gets to the right place in time!
Is any one else planning to go the Philadelphia? - all help and cheering is welcome!

Thanks for the posting the logistics above. This will greatly help with our food planning for the upcoming 5/9-11 weekend.

Bill, I'm thinking we can send some non-perishable items along with the V8 boat to Worcester, along with water/Gatorade, etc. This way, the Varsity team won't be totally empty-handed when comes to food...."Pop-tarts just don't cut it!" Will look for your comprehensive shopping list in short order. In the meantime, I'll go ahead and purchase some of the beverage items this week, and will be prepared to bring those, plus purchases early next week to the boathouse on 5/7.

See you all Saturday!

Dad Vail and ECAC info from Coach Laurance:

"The trailer will be loaded on Wednesday, May 7th. The v8 and lightweights will depart early Thursday morning. (not sure about the novices). We will drop the shells (2 fours, 1 8) in Philly and all of the supplies for feeding the team. I have tent spot #33 reserved which will be between the Finish Line grandstands and the 1500 meter mark. I and the v8 will continue to Worcester.

The athletes will boat out of Boathouse Row (still working on this), row up to the start, race, return to boathouse row, and then come to the tent to eat, watch teammates, etc. We will have parking passes for the athletes and some of the parents. (athletes will have two vans, they will move the tent, grills, etc. up to the tent location on Thursday. On Saturday, after the racing, athletes will load the tent, grill, etc and move back to Boathouse Row. Athletes will spend the night in Philly area and return Sunday morning.

The V8 will pick up the shells, tent, etc upon returning from Worcester on Monday. As we only have 1 crew in Worcester and we will have a van and truck, we will be on our own food vise. Between our races we will jet back to our hotel and relax.(Some parents will be around). All sounds workable on paper."

Thanks to Bill and Chris for their thought-provoking comments with regard to the UNC-Crew Parents Committee. I think we all can collectively appreciate what a finite number of parents have done to make a BIG difference in what has become, a very active means of support for our team.

You'll be hearing much more about how we grow this organization and the ways our collective Parents/Alumni community can contribute to this cause, in the very near term. There will be a presentation on this topic, for those of you attending the upcoming Awards Banquet on May 3. Additionally, we will further socialize this via direct email distribution and also at this Fall's Parent's Weekend in October, to better help acquaint new and current parents to the efforts of this new group.

Many thanks for everyone's proactive efforts to date!!

I would like to echo Mr. Faison's comments from the perspective of a student-athlete. It is incredible what this group of parents has done for our team. One of the first things we would do upon arriving at our hotel the day before a race would be to find a convenient store to buy snacks for the night and breakfast for the morning, unless we were lucky enough to be at a hotel with a continental breakfast provided. It is great to get up in the morning knowing that there are already at least 5 or 6 parents at the course cooking breakfast for us.

I hope that this message board has made it easier for parents to communicate and coordinate. I am constantly looking for new ways to help our parents help us, so if there are any suggestions that you have about how to help strengthen the communication between parents, via a listserv, message board, internet, whatever; just let me know.

Thanks again for all of the support this year. The food has been delicious and well-appreciated.

This weekend at the SIRA regatta in Oak Ridge marked the first year anniversary of the idea of forming a UNC Men’s Crew “Parent’s Travel Support Group”.
With our son being new to rowing last year, Lisa and I had no idea what a major regatta was like. When we arrived in Oak Ridge last year we finally saw what collegiate rowing events were all about which included all of the school tents, flags, trailers, boats, vendors, and every thing else that is part of a major regatta. We were impressed at the size and scope of the regatta. Our next step was to find our son and the rest of UNC Men’s Crew, hoping to find a UNC tent. After walking around the venue twice trying to locate our son and the rest of the crew we finally found them. They were all huddled under one small tree in the trailer area for shade. The crew had no tent, no flag, but most shocking was that they had no food or water, just that one small tree for shade.
I still remember the answer we got when we asked our son what he had for breakfast that day. His answer was Pop Tarts. They had stopped at a store the night before and picked up some items to eat. He bought Pot Tarts since the room he was staying in had a microwave he knew he would at least have a hot breakfast in the morning.
Lisa & I both thought how can UNC athletes complete at this collegiate level with Pop Tarts for breakfast? After are conversation with our son and seeing that they had no food or water, we ran to the nearest store and bought the crew water, Gatorade, granola bars, peanut butter crackers, ice and a storage bin to work as a cooler.
Later that day we meet David & Elisa Eaker. After talking to their son they also ran to the nearest store to fill the crew’s needs as we had. They also shared the same thoughts that we did, some things needed to be changed. The crew had very little continuous support for events of this scale, and how could the UNC student athletes compete at the same level with these other schools without the support that the others had.
After questioning the students and coaches, we found that support for the crew in the past depended on whatever support that local or visiting parents could provide. There was support for crew but it was unorganized.
During our conversation that day we decided that this needed to be corrected, some sort of continuous support group needed to be created. It was decided that we needed to create an infrastructure that could support these events. Our vision was a structure that could cover current needs and also last well past our children’s tenure with the crew. We wanted to create a support structure that could be passed on year to year. Over the past year we have successfully enlisted other parents that share our vision in creating this support group. The support the crew had this past weekend is validation of our original ideas. The crew no longer needs to huddle under that one small tree for shade and look at how far we have come in only one year!
Thank you to everyone for your support and efforts that has made our vision a reality.
I’m looking forward to years that lie ahead for the UNC Men’s Crew “Parent’s Travel Support Group”.

What a great weekend with Carolina rowers and parents - thanks to all!!
Several parents suggested that we post the names of hotels for upcoming regattas.
I don't own stock in Marriott, it just seems that these are the most convenient.
ECAC's May 10 - 11 Worcester MA Varsity 8 only. Residence Inn Worcester. Never stayed here but it gets great reviews on Tripadvisor and is 1.26 miles and 3 minutes from the racecourse.
Dad Vails - Philadelphia PA May 9 - 10. Courtyard Marriott Downtown. This is about a 15 minute drive from racecourse and in a great area of the city.
Head of Hooch - Oct 31 - Nov 2. Courtyard Chattanooga Downtown - right across street from racecourse. The Hilton Garden Inn is about 3 blocks from racecourse.
Head Of Schuylkill - same as Dad Vails - Looks as though the dates are Oct 24 - 26.
Hope this helps!

Do you want lettuce and tomatoes for subs/sandwiches? Good question, we have never offered that in the past due to the short storage life of lettuce & tomatoes. If you don't mind please bring them and we will see how it goes. My guess is it will be 50/50 who take the lettuce & tomatoes. So I think it's best if you purchase only enought for 20 sandwiches.

Thanks for rhe offer.
See you in Oak Ridge.

Chris - I knew that Matt had sent you the link - and I am sure some of the photos will add to your show. Patti just wanted me to be sure the parents had access to them, so if they would like to save them, they would be able to.

I am looking forward to the banquet and your photo accumulation of the "story of this season". It is always fun to look at the growth and good times as the season progresses..

I have often put together those shows and really appreciate the time and effort that goes into them! Thanks for all of your efforts!

Those are some great photographs. Give my compliments to the
photographer. Matt actually forwarded that along to me a week or so ago, and I have saved several of them to the team's external hard drive. I plan to upload some of them to the web gallery at the end of the season along with photos from all of our other regattas. Thanks again!

Here is a link to all the pictures that Patti Balchon took during the Lake Lure practice on Friday and the regatta on Saturday.... Patti is Matt's girlfriend's mom..... Kiffy (girlfriend) met the team and actually is in a number of the photos with them...

The pics with the rougher water were from the Friday practice. Saturday was calm and great for photo ops!!

Thanks to Patti for these pictures!! She wanted me to share these with you. (She was our main photographer for Matt's team last year!) We hope you can find your son in here somewhere. She really tried to get them all.

Bill,
Another thought - I heard that the kids were hungry again Saturday night and then some couldn't eat much breakfast Sunday due to their early race. Maybe we should add some carbs (not to sound like a Marist mom) to Saturday's dinner and/or get them pizza later at the hotel. It can be a bit too long between meals if they have an early race on Sunday. Maybe we could find a place to get a few trays of ziti? I would be happy to do that.
What do you think?

I went by the boathouse today (Monday) and picked up the big tote with all the cookwear. I'll do a once-over & clean all of it tonight, since you're on the road this week. I didn't want you to get to the boathouse on Wednesday and think the pots walked-off by themselves!

I'll bring bottled water and Gatorade to the boathouse on Thursday along with the above items, plus some other select items from the list you post tomorrow.

Debbie E., I picked up your ice-packs also and am re-freezing those for the Oak Ridge trip.

Allison & I really hate to miss this regatta....Oak Ridge is such a great venue, and the (rowers and parents) team efforts last weekend were AWESOME!

Good luck to the team this weekend!! ROW HEELS!!

Your menu looks great and we all appreciate the time and effort you put into this. Thank you for taking such good care of our kids! Here are my thoughts on the meal menu for Oak Ridge this weekend. I have all ready ran this menu past Coach Laurance and he is has give his OK.
Any ideas or additions you have would be appreciated.
I will be posting the shopping list tomorrow.

As in the past we can bring the items with us to the event, buy the items while in the area or delivery them to the boat house in Chapel Hill on Thursday evening. Please remember breakfast items for Saturday morning need to be at the UNC tent by 7:00 AM.

The weather forecast for this weekend in Oak Ridge is as follows:
Saturday 68 to 70 with a 40% chance of Thunder Showers
Sunday 68 to 70 and 30% chance of Showers.
With the warm weather the soup for Saturday’s lunch may not be a big hit, and options maybe needed. With the warm weather we should double up on gator aid and water.
For Sunday breakfast I think we need to wait on buying eggs until Saturday after the events to see if they are needed.

Looking at the posted schedule for the SIRA’s is see that all boats race fairly early in the morning, so I feel a heavy breakfast for Saturday is out of the question.

How does a morning light breakfast consisting of breakfast breads (bagels, muffins and croissants), Spreads (cream cheese, peanut & butter and jelly), Fruit (bananas, grapes and organs), Cereal (hot oatmeal and cold cereal), juices and milk sound?

According to the schedule there is a long break until the next races.
I was thinking that a hearty lunch would be in order during this break.
Here is what I would like to serve during this break. Hot meatball subs, chicken pasta soup & potato salad.

Since the events get over at 5:00 to 6:00 we will provide an after race day meal. The menu I have in mind is a Carolina BBQ with BBQ chicken, pulled pork, potato salad, cold slaw & Carolina Caviar.

As for Sunday, I see that the schedule could vary greatly according to the performance of the boats on Saturday. My thoughts on breakfast would be a combination of hot (eggs, bacon & sausage) and cold like Saturday’s menu. This menu can be adjusted on site with additional purchase of hot or cold items after Saturday events depending on the launching times for Sunday.

After the races on Sunday we will provide enough cold cuts and cheese for sandwiches that can be eaten after the events and also sent on the bus /vans for the ride home.

Once again any other ideas or suggestion are welcomed.

Thanks
Bill Faison

Again, I just want to thank all of the families that came out to support the crew at the Knecht Cup. I don't think we've had that many supporters at a regatta that far from home in a long time. The food was delicious and appreciated. Our awesome tent also drew a lot of attention from other schools as well. Thanks again for all of the continued support!

The start times for the races is not available online anywhere, but the general schedule is to have heats and semis on Saturday with the finals on Sunday morning. I went ahead and bought some water this past weekend for the trip. Have currently:

2 cases of 35 bottles each
4 gallon jugs (no spouts)....is that OK?

Also have from Lake Lure trip (and still fresh):
3-lbs cheese of different varieties

I will pick up 3 dozen bagels, cream cheese, and all bread loaves in New Jersey. Found a great place that makes 'em all fresh, on my way to race venue.

One last question:
Do you want to pick up perishables in NJ on Friday evening? Or do we have a means of keeping food cold for the trailer-trip up there?
I'll have a fridge in my room in NJ, so either way works for me. I can also store items overnight if needed, and can pickup whatever is not shipped up on trailer, when I arrive on Friday.

Thanks,

We are trying to get a handle on what the true cost is for these events. If you can please let me know what the items cost you we can get a better idea of what the cost is to feed the crew at events. This information will be a big help for us to create a budget for next years events.

Thank you all for your help and support.

Bill --

I just booked reservations to the Knecht Cup venue in NJ. For those wanting to go from RDU, Southwest offers a $187 fare R/T. Several hotel options in the Cherry Hill/Mt. Laurel areas. I'll have a fridge in the room, so if we have any perishables we need to pick up, please let me know. I'll be staying about 10-15 mins from the venue.

Is anyone else planning to go??

Thanks,

Welcome back!

I've got the bagels and cream cheese covered (from last week). Kept the bagels frozen for the week....

• 1 gal of orange juice

• 4 dozen bagels

• 2 Pounds Trail Mix (Fruits & Nuts)

• 2 Pounds of Grapes
• 12 Bananas

• 2 24 Bottles of Gator Aid
• 2 24 bottle case of water

Bill, Chris --

Is it safe to assume that we'll be prepping breakfast for the team this weekend?? I realize that lunch will be catered. If the answer is "yes," I have several items left from last weekend which I'll bring Saturday morning. Still have plenty of bagels and cream cheese. I also know David Eaker has eggs left over.

Bill, I know we'll need fruit, juice, milk, and coffee at a minimum. We might want to check on propane fuel also....tanks were getting kind of "light." Please give me a call if you can, and I'll give you a full run-down.

Thanks,

The team will be attending a 2-day regatta April 12-13 in Cherry Hill, NJ on the Cooper River; the Knecht Cup. The regatta consists of heats and finals, so each crew will race twice; once on Saturday and once on Sunday.

Last year in a cold, and very windy rain, the regatta was condensed to one day because of deteriorating weather conditions. the novice 8+ won their heat and went on to finish 3rd in the grand final, and the varsity 8+ finished 4th in the petite final.

The team will leave during the day on Friday, in hopes of arriving, rigging, and having time to row over the course Friday afternoon. We will travel by bus and will be staying in a local hotel. The crew will return immediately following the conclusion of our races on Sunday, arriving back in Chapel Hill Sunday evening.

It is our biggest regatta of the spring so far and the crews will be facing some of their toughest competition. The Knecht Cup is usually a good benchmark to see where the crews stand in relation to the other top SIRA and ECAC schools.

Hope this information is helpful. There is also a link to the Villanova rowing website on our schedule. All of the Knecht Cup info can be found there.

Hi Greg --

That's super!

I'll be staying at the Rumbling Bald property this evening. Some of the crew members will likely set-up the tent and serving tables after they arrive later today for us. I plan to arrive at the tent around 6:30AM to get things started for breakfast. David Eaker has the majority of the breakfast-related items, so I'm hoping he can meet us there pretty early as well. Yes, the cold cuts are need. The crew eats a lot. After planning these events for the past 2 year we have found that the rowers burn a lot of energy and need to be feed after they row. The sandwiches are just a snack to feed them after each boat is done with their event.

Hi - just again to clarify.... The team is coming to our vacation house on the lake following the regatta for lunch. I am making lasagne, bread, & salad for them. I don't think we need all the cold cuts for sandwiches, do we? I was thinking if we had a small amount, in case someone didn't care for the lasagne, that might be a good idea. Parents who come to the regatta are welcome to join us.... I'm assuming there will be maybe 10 parents there?

If someone wanted to help with the lunch, what would be helpful would be drinks (which you may already have covered), fruit and desserts of some sort. If I don't see confirmation on this, I will cover it myself.

This is a unique opportunity for us, as we are from Florida and haven't been to a UNC regatta yet. We have vacationed on Lake Lure for almost 10 years. We're excited to see them rowing on the lake!! Look forward to meeting you all there. (however, we do plan to be actually out on the lake watching the races.) I'll send a map via the team that day with directions to the house.

First off, I want to thank all of the parents who have jumped on this board the past couple of weeks to start planning to provide food and drinks for the team at our upcoming races. It is really awesome to have a group like this, keeping the team from having to purchase and prepare our own food. Thank you.

Also, concerning any questions regarding scheduling and times of events; I try to post an up-to-date schedule of events of each regatta on our website within a week of the event. Just visit the main site, www.unc.edu/crew, and follow the "schedule" link. Each race has a link to any other information including the schedule of events. We are really making an effort to keep this all up-to-date and keep everyone informed of what is going on.

To Patti Ulrich
Question 1: Do you need the meats and cheeses for subs? YES, after their events they need to be feed. After planning these events for the past 2 year we have found that the rowers burn a lot of energy and need to be feed after they row. They eat non stop and the more food the better.
Question 2: What time is the event over with and when is the planned return to CH? The last event starts at 10:15 AM, after that they have to de-rig and load the boats. They may be at the Tucker’s for lunch at 12 noon at the earliest. Give an hour or so for lunch plus another 4 hour drive back to Chapel Hill. My bet guess is they should be back on campus at 6 or 7 PM.
Question 3: My son requested that I bake homemade zucchini bread -- can I send in 5 loaves and cream cheese to add to the breakfast venue? How about strawberries? YES, please do they all love home baked goods. You would not believe how much they eat, this sport is intense and all the crew members go all out to be the best and burn calories at a tremendous rate that needs to be replenished.
If you have any other question please post them and I will try to respond.
Thanks you for your support.

Hi - I am looking at this message board for the first time this spring - and am a little confused about the Lake Lure event. I have been talking with my son Matt about that regatta for a couple of months now, and I had offered to provide a lunch for the team at a house that we stay at on the Lake following the regatta. He has been talking with coaches and teammates about it - so I'm not sure where the communication break down is, but I need to get it worked out if you can help me. I'll check with Matt again tomorrow, but I am happy to have the men's team, and any parents over to the house. The only catch is that they won't be able to pull the trailers in to the property, so I'm assuming they can leave them at the ramp? And I'm assuming they will be in the vans, as a bus on those roads won't work well.

Please let me know how we can clear this up..

Thanks, Kay Tucker

Hi Tricia -

Welcome to UNC Crew Parents Network!! We're glad you're here and can help us out!!

Bill is out of town on business this week, but will likely check our posting board here sometime later this week. Since you're a bit closer than many of us to Lake Lure, it would be great if you could bring some perishable items like fruit (grapes, sliced-up oranges, bananas, etc.) to the venue, and keep them on ice until we set-up Saturday morning. Pleaselet me know if that works for you.

I plan to replenish drinks again for the team before leaving here and sending with their boat trailer on Thursday evening.

Our target will be to have everything set-up around 7AM, given that the first race starts at 8AM. Allison and I will be driving in Friday evening and staying at the Lake Lure Inn.

Thanks again for your help!

Mr. Kingberg,

The two events coach mentioned were probably the All-Class Reunion Benefit that is hosted along with the Carolina Cup regatta the weekend of March 28-30. You can find more information on our website, http://www.unc.edu/crew and just follow the link to the GAA site to register to attend.

The other event is the end-of-year banquet that will be after SIRAs towards the end of the season. More information on that will be posted over the next month or so.

Hello Coach Richard and Team!

We're all looking forwatd to another exciring spring season!

During Parents Weekend last fall, you had mentioned two events (in addition to the regattas) for parents to attend in Chapel Hill. Could you please advise us as to the dates/venue for the Annual Bnaquet and Awards ceremony and the second event (which I can'r specifically recall)??

I want to express my gratitude to all of our great Tar Heel parents for your wonderful support of our students this semester. The food was outstanding, the coffee equaled that of the best coffee chains, and the brownies to die for. I enjoyed talking with many of you and I know our teams appreciated your encouragement as you eargerly participated in our "tar" "heel" yells as our crews rowed by.

After an encouraging fall we look forward to seeing many of you, again, at our spring races. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and we will not have any last minute changes to the race schedule.

As far as I know, there should be no problem with bringing things to the boathouse tonight. We will be loading the trailer and the truck tonight. I would suggest getting here a little earlier this time since it's getting dark out so early because of daylight savings.

Thank you again to everyone who is adjusting their plans last minute to accomodate us. Again, we appologize for the inconvenience, but this was the best way to ensure that everyone got a chance to race this weekend before the start of winter training.

if it will help anyone out, the event schedule is posted online at http://www.augustarowingclub.org/regattas/...vent%20Schedule.doc. We will be entering a champ 8+, lightweight 4+, and novices. The crew will probably arrive at the race site on saturday around 7 or 7:30am, as the lightweights have to weigh-in and their race is at 9:45am.

Bill --

I sent you separate email also.

I have business up in the DC area Friday, which made it real easy for me to drive down to Charlottesville well in-time for the Sunday venue. Given the last minute venue change, I won't be able to make it in time for Saturday's regatta and bring the food items I expected. I understand the team's motivation, and am disappointed that Va. could not be more accommodating to our Novice members.

This leaves the bagels, gallon water jugs, and tortilla wraps up for grabs...

Anyone have some name tags we can throw on, so this crowd can all remember each other's names? :)

As for hotels, I would shoot for anything on Route 29/Emmett Street area. Look at the directions on the UVA rowing site which Bill posted, and correlate with the hotel maps. I would not try to get one "downtown" unless that is all you can find--it is a bit more complicated driving from there. But Charlottesville is not very big anyway! However, I went through quite a few hotels before I found a room last night at the Comfort Inn. Here is the hotel list from the University:

Hello from Fayetteville, NC. Our son is a new rower this year and we would like to help at the Charlottesville race. We can bring the following unless somebody already has dibs on them:

If already taken, just let us know what is still on the shopping list. Also, we can help out Sunday morning if you need some extra hands. We will keep an eye on this board for updates. A good email address for us is bbtoomey@excite.com. Looking fwd to meeting y'all.

Assuming that the 8's will be one of the first races, we are planning on racing at 9, and therefore being on the water around 8:15. Since the Rivanna Romp is a Sunday only event it starts early in the morning. I’m not sure of the starting time, but the coaches would like to have the crew breakfast ready by 7:00 AM. My guess based on last year is they will be putting the boats in the water around 8:00 AM with the first event starting at 8:30 AM. I have attached a link to UVA Men’s Rowing Web page that give the direction to their boathouse where the Regatta will be held.

First thanks to all the support we had in Chattooga!
Since the next event is a Sunday morning event the crew only wants a good breakfast and nutritional snacks after the events.
We are in the process of creating a full needed list for the Charlottesville regatta but in the mean time the following is a short list of what is needed.

5 – Cases of 24 bottles of Gatorade
100 – Granola bars
100 – Cheese sticks (mozzarella is the favorite)
 5- Dozen Bagels
6 – Pounds of grapes
4 – Dozen Bananas

Please respond to this message board to what you are willing to donate to this event and if you are going to attend and bring the items to the event.
Breakfast for the crew will severed to the crew at 7:00 AM on Sunday if you are dominating a breakfast item it will need to be there at that time.
Please check this message board for updates on what is needed.

Ms. Mackintosh,
If you live near Chapel Hill, it would probably be easier for everyone if you just brought the Gatorade to the boathouse, however, If you are planning on attending the Hooch and will be there before the start of our first race on Saturday (which I believe is at about 10am) then it should be fine to just bring the Gatorade to the tent when you get there. We have some Gatorade with us already from the Schuylkill, so we should have plenty to get us by until you get there, so bringing them to the race should be fine.

So unless Mr. Faison says otherwise, bringing them to the race should be fine.

I will get all the Gatorade. Can I bring it with me or should I take it to the Boathouse?

just wanted to make sure that everyone was aware that we did not use any of the food that was sent to the Schuylkill due to the cancellation. I wanted to make sure that that food was factored into the count for the Hooch. I'm sure you have probably already accounted for it, but I just wanted to double check so that we don't end up with way more food than we need. Thanks again for all of the support!

I have made reservations to go to The Head of The Hooch. I live in Raleigh. If anyone needs me to carry things in my car, please let me know via this board, as I will be out of town until Thursday midday. I will check the message boards and try to bring whatever is most needed which has not already been donated.

Bill, I plan to be at the Rivanna Romp on 11/10-11. I'm not sure if anyone (Crew team included) is planning on getting there the evening beforehand. Since I'll be in the DC area that Friday, I'll be driving down from there, and will be staying at the Doubletree in Charlottesville, which is not far from the regatta venue. I realize this is still a little ways off, but wanted to proactively communicate my plans. I can certainly bring some food/snacks down with me, or pick them up once I arrive in town. Doubletree also has a $80 rate for AAA members.

We have not yet registered for spring regattas, but I would assume that we will be attending the Occoquan Sprints again this year. If we do, the scheduled date I believe is March 29-30, 2008 (same weekend as last season). Once the spring schedule is put together, I will post it on our website. I will also make note on this board that the schedule has been posted. Thanks for all of the help!!

Thanks so much for putting this together Chris. It is so helpful for those of us not living in NC. Last year we organized food and housing for the DC trip and would be happy to get it together again this Spring. Can anyone let me know if that race is scheduled and what the date would be and the Engelen family will assume the responsibility for the food and housing. Thanks again and Row Heels!

This parent’s message board was set up to streamline information on up coming regatta and the UNC Mens Crews need, food, transportation and housing for these events. What will be posted here is food items and related food service items that are need to feed 50 student athletes and coaches at the various regattas they predicate in. Hey everyone! I would like to first thank all of our parents for the great amounts of support they have shown. We have a lot of parents who are willing to help out this year, and that is AWESOME!

If you have any questions regarding the process of bringing food to regattas, please contact to Mr. Faison, and he will be glad to help out in any way possible.
