@Rajeev:
'Apps To Go' is just a personal selection of applications (never intended to be comprehensive) though I certainly think highly of 7-Zip too and use it quite often. However, its portability is affected by its use of the Windows registry; to avoid this PortableApps.com have a 7-Zip Portable package.

How could you forget 7-zip, Its portable,quick and very efficient way to compress or decompress files.It even has its own file manager.

Thanks, Jim. I'd never heard of ThinkingExpress before, but I've had a quick shot and it does look pretty good, with some surprisingly advanced features. When I get a bit more time I'll evaluate it in further detail and may well add it to AppsToGo. Wonder why it has such a low profile?

If you want a portable, tiny and powerful mind mapping software, I suggust ThinkingExpress (www.thinkingexpress.net). It is only 800K, one exe file, no dll, no installation, no ad, no network connection, but it's powerful.

I am sure you have heard about it, but never mentioned. Looks like you avoid proprietary apps. But there are some great free portable tools. I love the CodySafe menu (http://www.codyssey.com/products/codysafe.html) and I think you should mention it.

@rs:

Thanks for the information about WinRulerPortable. I've had a quick look and it certainly seems to have a lot of useful features and an informative website. However, it does write to C:\Documents and Settings\user subfolders which isn't so good for portability. At the moment, I've only tried it via Wine on Linux (partially works, but has display quirks) and a Windows 2000 virtual machine in VirtualBox (works, but fonts are rough). If I get the time, I'll investigate further. Know of any cross-platform rulers?

Hi,

Here is a great app-to-go that you may want to list. I have copied the author's description below and the link is at the end of this message.

This program is a semitransparent on-screen ruler with keyboard shortcuts to help you lay out GUIs, Web pages or measure anything in 5 units. The ruler saves its settings upon exit and is safe for work, since it does not modify the registry.

@Pierre,

Thanks for your comments. I'm using Arch Linux with Openbox these days myself, and am mostly browsing with Firefox as it's cross-platform (I have to use Windows XP at work). If you check the K-Meleon forums you'll find that there was a K-Meleon variant which worked pretty well via Wine. Unfortunately, K-Meleon was always a Windows-only project, and I'm afraid browser speed-freaks running Linux will have to look beyond Firefox to Opera, Midori (see http://software.twotoasts.de/index.php?/pages/midori_summary.html) or even Chromium when it appears ...

Sorry you have left K-meleon. Just moved to Linux (Debian LXDE) and would like to be able to use it there. It just is the faster browser on the planet. Wondering why there is not a Linux distro for it (one that does not use wine).

Thanks.

Just accidentdentally (me no spell too good) changed from Santana to Tom Waits while I was reading your site....but I'm not changing back.

You Rock.

This is possibly one of the best, succincnt and detailed analysis of multiple eeepc os's currently available from the wicked linux developers that I have found on the net - with a cool pic too!

Love the Crunchy lizard.

So Thanks to You & GNU

File sharing now from HyperFileShare at http://hyperfileshare.com/ which seems reliable and with a relatively straightforward interface.

A.N.Mouse:
I can't disagree that Bigupload is far from perfect, but quite a few services have been tried and they are all rather wanting. Do you have a reliable recommendation yourself?
