I have chosen as my topic proprioception and how it's affected by Body Work. I am amazed that our sensory nervous system only receives input in two ways: touch & proprioception. I want to research how body work can help improve proprioception and hopefully then, our sensory neurons can improve in function.

Body Work & Proprioception

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proprioception

This website is a perfect overview and background behind proprioception. Wikipedia is an online source full of information on any topic. It’s known as the online encyclopedia. I like this website as the beginning for my topic as it is a great few pages defining and explaining the basics of proprioception.

http://www.bowenworkhealthcenter.com/index.html

This website is presented by a health care provider in Washington State. Their primary modality is Bowen Work therapy, which is a body therapy designed to target injury to the sensory nervous system, specifically proprioceptors. This website is a great example of what Bowen Work is, and how body work targets the nervous system. The providers publishing this website provide links as well to information about Bowen Therapy and how it was discovered.

This is a great blog from a person suffering from kidney stones, and although definitely not what my topic is about, this person details how body work has helped with the afflicting condition. The body work specifically referenced is Bowen Therapy and it is a great blog about the person’s experience with the therapy and how beneficial it has been. It speaks directly to how Bowen Therapy stimulates proprioceptors in the body to bring about healing.

This article is written by a Chiropractic Doctor detailing how chiropractic body work can help with proprioception problems. This is a great article detailing why this physician believes body work can help proprioception. It is very informative and talks of proprioception in very lay terms, discussing proprioception in every day terms, so it’s easy to understand.

First of all, I would love to say this topic is completely awesome.
Again with my Wikipedia soapbox. They gather info from other sites that I tend to look up after I look there anyway. While the info is accurate, it is diluted through people editing and/or copying and pasting. I do use it occasionally, but I have only found it to be reliable at times. It does have good info on proprioception.
I felt that the second site, I'm sorry to say, was very poor. It had little info and seemed diluted as to their cause. While it explained its cause as a center, I did not fully understand the website enough to grab a lot of info from it.
The third website, I could not access. My computer is being dumb, so it may be my fault.
The last one has good info on proprioception and what it is, what it does. I liked its simplicity in its explanations and it had a lot of good info on this topic. Keep up the good work, you're doing a good job!

Layla, i agree with Heather that this is a "awesome" topic. And a very difficult one to take on because there is no big NIH institute or national non-profit organization that makes such a good major website. I also agree the wikipedia article can be good as a starting point, but the websites that are here don't really define or clear up the topic for me.

I understand "body work" to be a whole range of types of alternative therpies that might include yoga, rolfing, all kinds of massage, breathing techniques, maybe even acupuncture, but more related to movements. You might use this Wikipedia article as a starting point, and then ask which of these therapies or sites relate it back to proprioception.

Then, the question is are we talking about body to work to improve proprioception itself, or taking advantage of proprioceptive input to help with other health issues.

I don't want to discourage you becasue it is just a fascinating idea...and I love your justification that focuses on how amazing it is that touch and proprioception are the only input we get. But just find a couple of these bodywork sites that deal with proprioception and you're all set. Let me know if you want some more help with this,
LF
