I thought your website reviews covered most everything except neither included the worst features of your websites. I enjoyed learning more about Parkinson's disease. I like that you included a website that gave different approaches to this disease; alternative medicine vs. modern medicine. Good job.

You did a fantastic job with your website reviews. There was nothing missing, you covered all that was to be covered.

These website reviews were really good. I think the only thing missing was the worst features, but then there's probably not much wrong with these websites. I like the explanation of Parkinson's but wish I knew what bradykinesia was.

Proquest: Parkinson’s Disease Article
http://proquest.umi.com.proxy.yc.edu/pqdwe...34564&clientId=1407

This is a great article that has a variety of information with a good connection to Anatomy and Physiology.
This article was written by Ali Samii, John G. Nutt, and Bruce R. Ransom. It covers terminology, epidemiology, clinical features, diagnostic criteria, neuro-imaging, causes, role of aging/environmental factors, and treatment. I think it was written as an overview of Parkinson’s with an emphasis on new research for implantation of neuronal tissue.

This website explains how the three main “features” of Parkinson’s disease are tremor, rigidity and bradykinesia, which is slow movement. This is contributed to the lack of dopamine which results in tense muscles. Although the disease is due to motor neuron cell death, in the brain, there can also be sensory impairments and balance issues, among other symptoms.

This article describes how the autonomic system is also disturbed during the progression of Parkinson’s disease. So, not only are there somatic motor problems, such as tremor, poor balance and gait, but the visceral motor encompasses problems as well. For instance, difficulties with the intestines, urinary function, blood pressure and sexual dysfunction.

Even though it is mostly a motor neuron disease there are also sensory impairments such as psychiatric changes and sleep disturbances.

I couldn’t possible cover all of the correlations between this website and everything I have learned in A&P in this review, but I think I have a better understanding of how the central nervous system and neurons play such a vital role in Parkinson’s disease.

The two best features of this site are the depth of information and the ease of access as it is all on one page. I only see one "worse" thing about this website and that is that there is a lot of terminology that makes it hard to understand.

Holistic Online.Com Alternative Therapies for Parkinson’s Disease
http://www.holistic-online.com/Remedies/Parkinson/pd_home.htm

This is a really good website because of its many different resources. What works for one may not work for another so I like the variety of different therapies.
The website is written by Holistic online.com. It covers “What is Parkinson’s disease”, “Who gets Parkinson’s”, and treatments for disease. I think it was written to give people more options for alternative treatments. I really like this website because of the variety of methods for treating and coping with this disease.

This website relates to Anatomy and Physiology because Parkinson’s a disease of the nervous system in which the cells, motor neurons, deteriorate in the brain. As the degeneration continues it becomes more difficult for the person with Parkinson’s to control their body movement. Their brain can no longer send proper messages, through axons, to control skeletal muscle because of the motor neuron cell death.

As there is no clear cut remedy that works for all people with Parkinson’s there is many alternative therapies on this website have to do with biofeedback, nutrition information and stress reduction. Also included on this site are light therapy, meditation, yoga, massage, chelation therapy and much more.

The two best features of this website are the menu on the left of the different therapies and the comparisons of “Modern Western Medicine” and the “Alternative/Integrative Medicine”. These are both located on the main page, scroll down to the middle.
The worst thing about this website is that I don't see any links for support for people who have Parkinson's Disease, such as national websites or telephone numbers. Honeslty I don't see a second "worse" feature.

Laura, nice job finding some interesting websites and succinctly telling us who is posting, why and what's there. I agree with your peers on their views on the websites. I like the holistic site...and their interesting comparison of traditional and alternative treatments.

The Marin Independent article was interesting, not too much A and P. The Michael J fox foundation obviously has a lot of info and looks like it's becoming a fairly large organization...not surprising.

I really appreciate your using YC's electronic resources and finding the article in the Lancet. Obviously quite technical, but with plenty of understandable physiology.

1st website: I liked that the website provides reliability in their info, and it gives a lot of info about parikinsons. I didn’t like the way the website looked which I guess helps if you want to stay on the website and actually read it.
2nd website: I liked that this provided an alternative method for dealing with this disease because not always do people want to go through such drastic measures in treatment. I really liked the comparison between western and holistic approaches. The only thing I didn’t like was that it didn’t seem to include much info about the disease itself because it only explained it briefly.
3rd website: This website was interesting to read through because I have watched interviews with Michael J. Fox and I really feel for him in his situation. His story is good to read through if you have this disease. I couldn’t really find too much bad with this website.
4th website: I liked this story, it was very inspirational. I didn’t like how it didn’t give much info about Parkinsons and that it had completely unrelated links.

Parkinson’s Disease-Topic 1

Proquest: Like-I found this site to provide reliable information on Parkinson’s disease, and I feel that the information covers the subject thoroughly. Dislike-The site is on the “bland” side. I believe that the site good have been created with a little more creativity which would draw the reader into the topic.

Holistic: Like-I was glad to see this site included in this project. I have not previously heard of Parkinson’s disease being treated holistically. I especially appreciated the comparison of the Western approach versus the holistic approach to treatment of the disease. Dislike-Perhaps there could have been more information included about the disease itself?

Michael J. Fox Like-This site was intriguing because of familiarity with Michael J. Fox; I was not aware that Fox had created a site. There were many current facts regarding Parkinson’s disease which I believed would be especially interesting to an individual who had been diagnosed with the disease. The site would serve as a support for the patient. Dislike-There is not a lot of basic information on the disease. It would be necessary to find another source for information regarding the disease itself. It may be good to have links from the site for the individual who wants more basic, fact-like information.

Marinij.com Like-Compelling site about an individual with Parkinson’s who never gives up. I believe that this article from the newspaper, and the link to the “I never give up site web site would be extremely inspirational to anyone who has a serious illness. Dislike-Very little information on the disease itself. It would be necessary to go to another site for information on the disease.

Proquest

I like the website it is very informative research and very organized. It is a reliable resource because it is updated periodically.

I did not find anything worse about this website.

Holistic

This website had everything a person with Parkinson’s disease would need for relaxation, nutritional therapies and a better understanding of the disease that has caused their life to become disabled.

I did not find anything worse about this website.

Michael J. Fox

This website is very inspiring for those to read and research. I like the way that Michael J. Fox organized his website to the point and easy to get around.

I did not find any negativity with this website.

Marin Independent Journal

Wow, this website shows an amazing defeat of such a life changing disease. True dedication by Jim Wetherell, I work with Parkinson’s patience in therapy. Some need to read such articles to inspiring them when they do not think they are going to make it. I am always encouraging these people to keep going. I am so proud of people that can say this disease is not taking away my life, YES!

I did not find anything worse.

The Lancet Article
This article was very comprehensive. With the explanations Parkinson’s and it’s history all on one page, I didn’t have to go searching around for everything.
Holistic Online
Good site with many treatment based clicks. It even went as far as to describe the different surgeries available for Parkinson’s.
Michael J. Fox
I liked this site in that it had many “Parkinson’s in the News” articles. It had breakthrough articles as well as personal story articles.
Marin Indepentdent Journal
I liked this newspaper article about a man living through Parkinson’s through tricycling. I liked how it gave a personal touch to Parkinson’s and also explained the disease.

Proquest – The article has information regarding Parkinson’s Disease but it is a little boring to read. Websites are more interesting to me because it keeps it interesting because you can view a lot of different links for information. It does give treatment and surgery options.

Holistic-online – I really enjoyed this website. It has great information re: Parkinson’s Disease it explained the disease in detail. I like that it had the modern medicine vs. the holistic medical treatments available. I can’t see anything negative about this website.

Michael J. Fox website – Many people have Parkinson’s Disease but Michael J. Fox coming out, when he was ready, to share his story and state that he would help with this disease is an inspirational story. His website is wonderful. It seems that he has done amazing things to try to uncover a cure for this disease. The website gives information regarding research programs, living with the disease, how people can help and about his foundation. I can’t find anything negative about this website either.

Marin Independent Journal – Personal story about Jim Whetherell who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1995. Again, a very inspirational story of how he found a way to help himself feel better by riding a 3 wheel bike. He is amazing because he rides 20 to 50 miles a day. I can’t even make it to the gym… By doing that he has slowed the deterioration of his muscles and helped with other the symptons of his disease. Great story.

This website is by Holisticonline.com. It covers what is Parkinson’s disease, who gets Parkinson’s disease, symptoms, understanding the disease, causes, Western medicine and alternative treatments for disease. I think it was written to give options to people for alternative treatments.

This website is by the Michael J. Fox organization for research. It covers information on Parkinson’s Disease, resources, stories of people living with the disease, research programs, and archives of Michael J. Fox’s newsletter. I think they made this website to bring awareness to the disease, provide resources for those living with the disease and to raise money for research.

This article was written by Richard Halstead of the Marin Independent Journal. It covers Jim Wetherell’s story of living with Parkinson ’s disease. It was written to bring awareness to the disease and tell his story of how he is dealing with it and enjoying his tricycle rides of 20-50 miles each ride!

I have chosen the topic of Parkinson's Disease because of Michael J. Fox. I watched his amazing spot on "Inside the Actors Studio" and his courage is amazing. It relates to A&P becasue it is thought to be a disease of the nervous system and the brain.
