Yes we always pray for all of you!!! About the Glorietta blast we really don't know, here's a good reading about it from Inquirer Interactive...

The damage wrought by the blast at the Glorietta 2 mall on Friday is too huge to be attributed to a methane or diesel explosion, according to two chemical engineering professors of the University of the Philippines.

Professor Ernesto dela Cruz, chair of the UP Department of Chemical Engineering, Tuesday said methane could explode but that it was not likely to cause a tank of diesel to explode.

“It would require some time to heat the diesel up, cause it to vaporize, and explode,” Dela Cruz said Tuesday in an interview.

But then again, he said, “there should be a sufficient amount of [methane to cause the explosion], and then a spark should be present to cause the ignition.”

Police had theorized that the explosion could have originated from an “accumulation of methane” at the basement of Glorietta 2 as an offshoot of a malfunctioning sewage system.

The heat from the motors, ventilator fans and automatic switches could have ignited the methane, and triggered an eruption of a 3,500-liter diesel tank in the basement, investigators had said.

But according to professor Wilfredo Jose, heat alone cannot trigger the explosion of methane, unless the heat is “very high, like if it’s greater than 110 degrees Celsius.”

Speaking with the Philippine Daily Inquirer (parent company of INQUIRER.net) in the same interview, Jose explained that methane could explode if sparked by static electricity, flint, or a match, among others.

“Methane can explode, but I can’t say how strong it is. It all depends on the amount of methane,” he said.

Diesel doesn’t explode

Dela Cruz added that heat alone could not trigger the diesel tank to explode.

“The diesel has to be [deliberately] heated up so it would vaporize and explode. What explodes is the vapor. The diesel, which is liquid, doesn’t explode, but it may cause fire,” he said.

To ascertain how the explosion at Glorietta 2 caused such a huge damage to the building, several factors have to be considered, Dela Cruz said.

“The most significant ones are the amount of methane generated, and the integrity of the enclosure,” he said. “The damage is too big to attribute it to methane explosion. But this is just a conjecture.”

The two professors refused to speculate what type of explosion could have caused such a huge damage.

Dela Cruz said the UP College of Engineering could help in the investigation of the explosion, and said he could recommend some experts on the matter.

“Even the college would [agree to] assist if called upon, as some sort of an impartial observer or party. We can assist in finding the right experts,” he said.

‘How I wish’

On the remarks of the two UP chemical engineering professors, Director Geary Barias, chief of the National Capital Region Police Office, had this to say: “How I wish they were with us so they could have looked at the place for themselves.”

Barias said the Glorietta 2 basement lacked ventilation -- a condition, he said, that could have led to an increase in temperature and accumulation of diesel vapor and fumes.

“Based on the statement of maintenance [personnel], there isn’t enough ventilation to facilitate air circulation on the side of the basement that houses the fuel tank,” he said.

Barias also said police investigators were still waiting for the technical opinion of experienced mechanical engineers to discover the cause of the explosion.

He said investigators were likewise awaiting the test results and evaluation of metallurgic forensic experts of evidence found in the basement.

Still suspended

In Makati, the city government said it was not lifting the temporary suspension of operations at the Glorietta complex despite a request by its operator, Ayala Land Inc. (ALI).

Building official Nelson Morales, an engineer, said the city government would have to conduct its own investigation of the entire complex, and that for it to do so, Glorietta must remain closed.

The complex, however, remained open Tuesday.

Morales said the city government could not grant ALI’s request that the suspension order be lifted even after the latter’s own inspection of the structural soundness of the complex and the mechanical, electrical, sanitary and plumbing facilities.

“Pending the result of our investigation and other government agencies, we regret to inform you that the temporary suspension order cannot be lifted yet,” Morales said in a letter to ALI.

Sorry my previous post should be under my name instead of AHS77 Kapihan, just to give more light to what's happening in Glorietta, here's Trillanes stand about it based on his experience in the past (Inquirer Interactive News again)...

Detained Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV is standing pat on his claim that National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales and Armed Forces Chief of Staff Gen. Hermogenes Esperon Jr. masterminded the explosion at the Glorietta 2 mall in Makati City.

Trillanes made the accusation hours after the deadly blast on Oct. 19. But he did not elaborate on it when he was interviewed by agents of the Philippine National Police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) on Oct. 20.

He said he would only reveal his information to an “independent, impartial and credible” investigating body.

On Tuesday, members of Trillanes’ staff said the ex-Navy officer would welcome a Senate inquiry into the matter because he refused to believe the PNP theory that the explosion was an accident.

They said Trillanes’ position was that the gas leak angle was a “cover-up.”

“As a person and now as an elected lawmaker, I do not just make statements out of pique or without anything to stand on, or to grandstand. I have information obtained from my own network of informants in the [military] and the intelligence community,” Trillanes said in a statement issued by his office.

He said he had spent about three hours discussing the matter with CIDG agents in his detention cell at the Marine brig in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

‘Pogi’ points

“But I simply cannot imagine them investigating Norberto Gonzales and Esperon once I give them everything I know. Did we ever have a truly impartial investigation conducted by the Arroyo administration?” he said.

Meanwhile, Sen. Panfilo Lacson assailed Sen. Gregorio Honasan for purportedly trying to earn “pogi (look-good) points” with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at the expense of his schoolmates at the Philippine Military Academy in the Senate.

“If your deal with [Ms] Arroyo goes as far as defending not just her but [also] all her key officials at all costs, please don’t do it at your cavaliers’ expense,” Lacson said in a text message.

Lacson was referring to the alleged compromise deal between Honasan and Ms Arroyo during the recent elections, which supposedly allowed Honasan to campaign unimpeded, unlike Trillanes, who had to campaign behind bars.

Trillanes is being prosecuted for his leading role in the 2003 Oakwood mutiny, in which Honasan was also implicated.

On Monday, Honasan criticized both Lacson and Trillanes for making anti-administration tirades regarding the Glorietta explosion without proof.

People’s thirst

But Lacson retorted: “It’s not politics that Sonny Trillanes and I are playing. We are just being consistent with our ideals and principles in line with our mandate to serve our people without fear or favor, and more importantly, without pretensions.”

At a press briefing, Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. said that while he could not claim that Trillanes was right, he believed that the latter would not talk about the government’s purported involvement in the explosion without basis.

Pimentel said the people’s thirst for the cause of the blast would only be slaked by an independent probe body. He said that despite the assistance of foreign experts in the inquiry, the public would continue to doubt the government team’s credibility.

Have things settled down over there now? No more student manifestations in the streets of Manila over the president's husband's scandal? I'm glad you guys live far away in Baguio and aren't near those things.

Thanks for your concern bro, good we live far from Manila yeah, correct. But I guess as of this writing, things are becoming quite quiet in the streets of Manila and Makati. It's sort of Ningas Cogon stuff lang yata yun though Jun Lozada continues with his crusade to expose the evils of the First Couple, anyway this is a demoncratic country. Unlike during the time of Marcos, delikado siya!!!! Bye for now.
