Capt. John Dwelley is back in business with his water taxi DELIGHT. Call John on 207-244-5724 for fast and comfortable service to or from the mainland or among the islands. John also specializes in cruises up Somes Sound or to Baker Island. He keeps a Boston Whaler at a mooring near Baker to take parties ashore who wish to visit the lighthouse or to picnic on the dance rocks.

I want to see some "off the beaten path" type of stuff when I visit the Cranberry Isles in early July, I was looking at a trip to dead mans point. Any help would be greatly appreciated...dav_greg@yahoo.com

dave, dead man's point & surrounding area is private property.

i suggest you explore the new 1-mile-long "Cranberry House Trail" behind Cranberry House. It was just created this spring, so it's not too well known yet. it is thru acres of unimproved land, very scenic & secluded. 250' or so of bog bridging thru wet areas.

Dave! Explore away, see what happens (so says the Cranberry Isles Militia): I sure do! Nobody owns the beach, so you are legally free of restraint if you access by way of legal right-of-way, such as the town road to Murches, and also by way of the path behind the Donald Trust house (Barbara Donald house), which I give you permission to use (the path itself now being Maine Coast Heritage protected wilderness-- and I doubt they would mind).
Bruce! Where is the WIFI hook-up from the Community Center? I need a hotspot!

But seriously, the high tide line (meaning winter storm surge high tide) is the legal boundary for private property. The seas belong to us all.

my sister Joanne Beal Tate passed away on April 25th was born and raised on great cranberry island, was laid to rest on July 5th 2008, by her parents Clarence and Barbara Beal. i want to thank Annie Alley and Eva Bracy for their support at this most difficult time, we were very sad that no other islander, were there to say good by. she loved the island and all the people, she talked about life growing up on cranberry often. may god bless her.

If anyone would like to dispose of their kitchen compost somewhere else... I'll take it! Just toss it in the wire thingy to the left of my shed, or give me call, leave it on the lawn (preferably in a container), something-- just don't toss it in the trash or off the dock! Its good stuff, and I am building soil! Thanks~

Philippe-
Do you mind if it has egg shells or citrus? I have heard that egg shells need to be crushed and that citrus is not good for a compost pile. Wondering if you had any thoughts on this. -Katherine

Hello all!

I am looking forward to another relaxing week at GCI. My family and I are regulars. The purpose of this message is to see if anyone out there on Great Cranberry has a golf cart for borrow or rent for the dates of August 10-16 2008. Feel free to email me at andrew.seanor@ct.gov or at steffie313@aol.com

I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,
Andy Seanor

Compost: I'll take it all, the bugs can sort it out! Items of high acidity can hinder decomposition, such as coffee grounds, but unless you are planning on some serious lemonade or caffeinating the Navy, a few rinds and grounds won't slow the worms a bit. As for eggshells, they crush more than break down, but calcium is a welcome soil additive (which counteracts acidity, conveniently). Detritus fauna are hearty, ambitious critters, and the only thing above their reach are large quantities of bones which get sifted out anyway; everything else is dirt. Heap it on!

I would like to let everyone know that I have recently upgraded my USCG License. I now hold Master Oceans unlimited tonnage and Master Oceans 1600 Ton License. I would just like to express my thanks to my mentors as I grew up on GCI: Capt. Chuck Liebow, Capt. Norman Sanborn, Capt. Norman Sanborn II, Capt. Ted Spurling Jr., and Capt. David Bunker. I am currently sailing as Chief Officer onboard a 700' tanker in the US Gulf.
Aubrey and I are currently living in Auburn, Maine and soon to be moving to Minot, Maine. Aubrey is Practicing Law for Shankman and Accociates in Lewiston, Maine. We both are enjoying our 10 Mo. old baby girl, Cassidy. If anybody would like to email us, you can at brap3@hotmail.com
